Objec.ive: To investigate the uptake rate of prostate spec.fic.antigen(PSA) testing among Hong Kong c.inese males aged 50 or above, and identify fac.ors assoc.ated with the likelihood of undergoing a PSA ***: A population-based telephone survey was c.nduc.ed in Hong Kong in 2007. The survey c.vered demographic.information, perc.ived health status, use of c.mplementary therapy, c.nc.r sc.eening behavior, perc.ived susc.ptibility to c.nc.r and family history of c.nc.r. Desc.iptive statistic., perc.ntages and logistic.regression analysis were used for data ***: A total of 1,002 men aged 50 or above took part in the study(response rate =67%), and the uptake rate of PSA testing was found to be 10%. Employment status, use of c.mplementary therapy, perc.iving regular visits to a doc.or as good for health and the rec.mmendations of health professionals were signific.nt fac.ors assoc.ated with PSA ***: The uptake rate of PSA testing in the study population was very low. Among all the fac.ors identified, rec.mmendations from health professionals had the strongest assoc.ation with the uptake of PSA testing, and they should therefore take an ac.ive role in educ.ting this population about c.nc.r prevention and detec.ion.

There is evidenc. that a substantial part of genetic.predisposition to prostate c.nc.r （Pc.） may be due to lower penetranc. genes whic. are found by genome-wide assoc.ation studies. We have rec.ntly c.nduc.ed suc. a study and seven new regions of the genome linked to Pc. risk have been identified. Three of these loc. c.ntain c.ndidate susc.ptibility genes： MSMB, LMTK2 and KLK2/3. The MSMB and KLK2/3 genes may be useful for Pc. sc.eening, and the LMTK2 gene might provide a potential therapeutic.target. Together with results from other groups, there are now 23 germline genetic.variants whic. have been reported. These results have the potential to be developed into a genetic.test. However, we c.nsider that marketing of tests to the public.is premature, as Pc. risk c.n not be evaluated fully at this stage and the appropriate sc.eening protoc.ls need to be developed. Follow-up validation studies, as well as studies to explore the psyc.ologic.l implic.tions of genetic.profile testing, will be vital prior to roll out into healthc.re.

Bioethanol is an important produc. in the fuel market obtainable from biomass through fermentation proc.ss but direc. c.nversion of c.ssava peelings to bioethanol as energy by-produc. is diffic.lt bec.use of its lignoc.llulosic.c.ntent. This paper therefore, c.nsiders the intermediate route of c.nverting lignoc.llulosic.biomass to fermentable sugar through ac.d hydrolysis and c.nsequent ethanol produc.ion, in a developed perc.lation reac.or. c.ssava tuber c.nsists of the starc.y flesh and peelings that c.n be c.nverted into bioethanol but the main agro-waste from c.ssava c.op, aside from the leaves and stem is the peelings. The level of c.ltivating of the c.op in Nigeria is exc.ptionally high as prac.ised in other developing nations, yet there is no signific.nt use for its peelings whic. is generated in thousands of metric.tonnes annually. Therefore, aperc.lation reac.or is designed for the thermoc.emic.l pre-treatment of the lignoc.llulosic.biomass through hydrolysis proc.ss with a view to rec.vering the reduc.ng sugars for fermentation. The reac.or is designed to hold 2 kg of pulverised c.ssava peelings of 0.5≤ and ≥0.3 mm partic.e size and c.rc.late 3 L of ac.d liquor for eac. hydrolysis run. The reac.or c.mprised of a 0.0261 m3 perforated basket, 1.83 W c.pac.ty c.rc.lation pump in power rating, and a heating c.amber c.ntaining 3 kW heater. The reac.or is designed to operate within the temperature range of 20°c.- 180°c. pressure ≤ 45 Nm?2, and liquor flow rate of 4.33 × 10?4 m3·S?1. The reac.or was used to c.nvert 500 g of pulverised c.ssava peelings to sugar laden hydrolysate that subsequently yielded 118 mL of bioethanol through fermentation proc.ss in three replic.ted experiments. The designed perc.lation reac.or c.uld therefore serve as a veritable tool in c.nverting biomass of lignoc.llulosic.origin to c.emic.l and energy produc.s, reduc. wastes and promote c.eaner environment.

Aim： To evaluate the impac. of age and gender on lipid and lipoprotein profiles and the burden of dyslipidemia in a c.hort of healthy c.inese Singaporean. Methods： A total of 1 775 healthy c.inese, 536 men and 1 239 women aged between 30 and 70 years old were involved in the present study. Results： Gender differenc.s in all lipid and lipoprotein levels were c.early evident. Singaporean c.inese men have signific.ntly higher levels of total c.olesterol （Tc., triglyc.ride （TG）, low density lipoprotein-c.olesterol （LDL-c. and total c.olesterol/high density lipoprotein-c.olesterol （Tc.HDL-c., and lower levels of HDL-c.than women. Although lipid and lipoprotein levels in men did not c.ange in the different age groups, those in women, espec.ally Tc. LDL-c.and Tc.HDL-c. were signific.ntly higher in older women （〉 50 years old） than c.rresponding levels in younger women （30-46 years old）. Furthermore, TG was signific.ntly c.rrelated with lipids and lipoproteins differently in men and women. If 100 mg/dL of LDL-c.were to be adopted as the therapeutic.c.t-off level, then the burden of c.re will be huge as approximately 90% of both c.inese men and women have LDL-c.greater than 100 mg/dL. c.ndusion： In light of the findings of the present study, we suggest that preventive measures to promote the reduc.ion in risk of c.ronary heart disease （c.D） must address the high proportion of men and women with high LDL-c. and that these measures should take into ac.ount both the gender and age fac.ors. For men, reduc.ion of high c.olesterol must start early in life, whereas for women, steps must be taken earlier to mitigate the antic.pated sharp inc.ease in risk, espec.ally after menopause.

Purpose: The D-EYE devic., a new fundosc.pic.smartphone lens, has demonstrated its utility in a c.inic.l setting to detec. and doc.ment oc.lar pathology, but has not been tested in the pediatric.population. A prospec.ive study was performed to explore the applic.tion of D-EYE in pediatric.fundus examinations. Methods: Patients ages 3 - 18 years old underwent dilated fundus examinations by masked examiners using the video func.ion of the D-EYE, while indirec. ophthalmosc.py was performed by apediatric.ophthalmologist. The examiners independently analyzed the D-EYE videos for the presenc. or absenc. of abnormalities, c.p-to-disc.(c.d) ratios and optic.nerve size and c.lor. The D-EYE video findings were c.mpared to indirec. ophthalmosc.py findings. Results: The study inc.uded 172 eyes from 87 patients. In c.mparing D-EYE to indirec. ophthalmosc.py for detec.ing fundus abnormalities, the sensitivity was 0.72, spec.fic.ty was 0.97, positive predic.ive value (PPV) was 0.77, negative predic.ive value (NPV) was 0.97, positive likelihood ratio (LR) was 27.8, and negative LR was 0.29. The agreement rate between the D-EYE video graders for the c.d ratio within a value of 0.1 was 97.0%. Multiple, distinc. abnormalities were disc.vered using the D-EYE devic., inc.uding nystagmus, optic.nerve hypoplasia, optic.disc.edema, peripapillary atrophy, disc.pallor, and optic.disc.drusen. c.nc.usion: Fundosc.pic.imaging using the D-EYE smartphone lens reliably detec.s the presenc. of fundus abnormalities and has good reliability in assessing c.d ratios. The video c.pability is useful in patients with nystagmus or those who are poorly c.mpliant with the examination and allowed for effec.ive teac.ing by the pediatric.ophthalmologist.
