Introduction:Land use intensification and urbanisation processes are degrading hydrological ecosystem services in the Guapi-Macacu watershed of Rio de Janeiro.A proposal to pay farmers to restore natural watershed services might be an alternative to securing the water supply in the long-term for the around 2.5 million urban water users in the study *** study quantifies the costs of changing current land use patterns to enhance watershed services and compares these costs to the avoided costs associated with water treatment for public ***:We use farm-household data to estimate the opportunity costs of abandoning current land uses for the recovery of natural vegetation;a process that is very likely to improve water quality in terms of turbidity due to reduced inputs from *** cost estimates are extrapolated to the watershed scale based on remote sensing land use classifications and vulnerability analysis to identify priority zones for watershed management *** assess the potential demand for watershed services,we analyse water quality and treatment cost data from the main local water treatment ***:Changing agricultural land uses for watershed services provision generally comes at high opportunity costs in our study area near to the metropolis of Rio de *** low cost watershed conservation options do exist in the livestock production *** options have the potential to directly reduce the amount of sediments and nutrients reaching the water bodies,and in turn decrease the costs of treatment needed for drinking *** cover changes at the scale needed to improve water quality will,nonetheless,likely exceed the cost of additional investments in water ***:The state water utility company’s willingness to pay for watershed services alone will not be enough to induce provision of additional watershed *** conclude that monetary incentives conditioned on specific adjustme

Comparative eye-tracking evaluation of scatterplots and parallel coordinates

We investigate task performance and reading characteristics for scatterplots(Cartesian coordinates)and parallel *** a controlled eye-tracking study,we asked 24 participants to assess the relative distance of points in multidimensional space,depending on the diagram type(parallel coordinates or a horizontal collection of scatterplots),the number of data dimensions(2,4,6,or 8),and the relative distance between points(15%,20%,or 25%).For a given reference point and two target points,we instructed participants to choose the target point that was closer to the reference point in multidimensional *** present a visual scanning model that describes different strategies to solve this retrieval task for both diagram types,and propose corresponding hypotheses that we test using task completion time,accuracy,and gaze positions as dependent *** results show that scatterplots outperform parallel coordinates significantly in 2 dimensions,however,the task was solved more quickly and more accurately with parallel coordinates in 8 *** eye-tracking data further shows significant differences between Cartesian and parallel coordinates,as well as between different numbers of *** parallel coordinates,there is a clear trend toward shorter fixations and longer saccades with increasing number of *** an area-of-interest(AOI)based approach,we identify different reading strategies for each diagram type:For parallel coordinates,the participants’gaze frequently jumped back and forth between pairs of axes,while axes were rarely focused on when viewing Cartesian *** further found that participants’attention is biased:toward the center of the whole plot for parallel coordinates and skewed to the center/left side for Cartesian *** anticipate that these results may support the design of more effective visualizations for multidimensional data.

Influence of zone formation on stability of continuous fluidized bed layering granulation with external product classification

Continuous fluidized bed layering granulation with external product classification and a sieve-mill cycle can show instability in the form of self-sustained nonlinear oscillations of the particle size distribution. In the present study, the stability and bifurcation analysis of this process is presented. The underlying process models explicitly account for compartmentalization of the fluidized bed into a granulation and a drying zone, which is an important feature of many technical processes. Implications for plant operations are discussed with the help of stability diagrams as a function of zone size, residence time within different zones, the addition of external seeds and particular properties of the sieve-mill cycle.

Entropy, Biological Evolution and the Psychological Arrow of Time

We argue that in Universes where future and past differ only by the entropy content a psychological arrow of time pointing in the direction of entropy increase can arise from natural selection in biological evolution. We show that this effect can be demonstrated in very simple toy computer simulations of evolution in an entropy increasing or decreasing environment.

Model of the Pulsing Atom

In this work, we reanalyzed the movement of an electron in the electrostatic field of nucleus. The trajectory of the electron’s motion is an ellipse with a minor semiaxis, tending towards zero. From a mathematical point of view the movement of an electron in such an orbit will be equivalent to the oscillation of an electron. The action produced by electrons in movement between stationary points is discrete and proportional to a Planck constant. This condition sets the allowable values of the electron energy and the radius of their orbit. Electrons on the same shell perform symmetric synchronous oscillations. Their frequency is of the order of 1016 Hz. Most of the time the electrons are located on the periphery of the atom, periodically they simultaneously rush to the nucleus, the atom rapidly compresses and immediately decompresses, i.e. pulsates. The model gives Bohr formula for the energy of single-electron atom and suitable values of ionization potentials of the atoms of the second period of the Periodic Table.

In situ mass spectrometry of autoimmune liver diseases

Primary biliary cirrhosis(PBC),primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC)and autoimmune hepatitis(AIH)are the major forms of autoimmune liver diseases each characterized by the destruction of a specific liver cell type and the presence of differing *** took a proteomic approach utilizing in situ matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry(MALDI MS)to obtain profiles directly from liver samples of patients with PBC,PSC,AIH and *** ability to precisely localize the region for acquisition of MALDI MS allowed us to obtain profiles from bile ducts,inflammatory infiltrates and hepatocytes from each biopsy *** tools developed to identify peaks and compare peaks across diseases and cell types were used to develop models to classify the *** an initial set of testing samples from PBC patients and controls,we identified unique peaks present in bile ducts,inflammatory infiltrates and hepatocytes that could classify samples in a validation cohort with 88–91%***,profiles of PSC and AIH did not differ significantly from *** of proteins in these peaks may represent novel autoantigens or effector *** findings illustrate the potential of a proteomic approach to autoimmune diseases with in situ MALDI MS.

Erica Fox Brindley, Music, Cosmology, and the Politics of Harmony in Early China.

Chinese music is a broad topic that includes a wide variety of methodological premises, which music historians, ethnomusicologists, music theorists, and systematic musicologists can use for fruitful exploration. In her book Music, Cosmology, and the Politics of Harmony in Early China （MCPH, hereafter）, Erica Fox Brindley, who is an intellectual and cultural historian of early China, undertakes an historical approach and works out the role of musical sound in the social, natural, and religious order. She explores ＂the role of music, and even sound itself, as both an agent and indicator of moral, orderly, and cosmically balanced rule＂（42）. Based on early imperial texts Brindley points out that already during the Warring States period （481-221BC） sound （sheng 声） is clearly a component of the cosmos and later, during the Han Dynasty （202BC-220AD）, possesses special cosmic efficacy （69）. The concept of sheng plays an important role in her explanations of the cosmological and political aspects of music,

Lanthanide clusters [Ln4（μ3-OH）2（η2-accp）4（（μ-O）-η2-accp）6]（Ln = Y（4）,Gd（5）; accp = 2-acetylcyclopentanoate） are accessible by treatment of [M（NO33·6 H2 O]（M = Y（1）,Gd（2）） with 3 equiv. of Haccp（3） in presence of NaOH. The molecular structures of 4 and 5） in the solid-state are discussed. The thermal behavior of 4 and 5 was studied by TG under Ar and O2, showing multistep decomposition processes. Additionally, DSC studies were carried out under an atmosphere of O2. PXRD measurements of the TG residues confirm the formation of Ln2 ***-coating experiments were carried out with 4 and 5 for Ln2 O3 film deposition on silicon substrates. The layers are smooth, close and are of thicknesses of 18.87±1.13 nm and 25.59 ± 4.55 nm for Ln = Y and Gd, which was evidenced by SEM and EDX studies. Field-effect transistors were successfully fabricated by deposition of carbon nanotubes on top of the Y2 O3 films and formation of palladium contacts by a lift-off procedure. An on/off ratio of more than 4 orders of magnitude is achieved without considerable leakage currents. These results demonstrate the potential use of spin-coated Y2 O3 as a gate dielectric in electronic devices.

Sign, Image and Language in The Book of Changes CYijing 易经）

It is challenging to estimate the degree to which the system of the Trigrams and Hexagrams in The Book of Changes （Yijing） had an impact on the whole history of Chinese thought. The universal paradigm from which it was derived formed the basis of a semiotic theory of evolution which, because of structural analogies, was applied to all fields and aspects of human life where decision making and action in correspondence with a cosmic principle was required. To achieve that goal, countless commentaries on and interpretations of the Yijing have been written. They can be divided into two schools. The first used the Yijing as a book for divination, in combination with manifestations of the universe and nature. The second interpreted it with a philosophical background, making it part of the tradition of Confucian thought. Modem scholars have also contributed some new approaches to the Yijing. My paper is based on the assumption that the Trigrams and Hexagrams of the Yijing cannot be understood in a purely representational way. They do not represent things apart from their relation to human needs or consciousness. Because of the co-determination of text and reader as a task without determinate end-points, it proves to be a unique case of effective-history. In the Yijing, there is no real line between culture and nature, sign/image/language and fact, the universe of semiosis and other universes. With its use of signs, images and language, the Yijing confirms that the universe of semiosis is the universe of heaven, earth and man. Against this background, my explanations will not only focus on the Trigrams and Hexagrams. My paper will also deal with the following topics：（1） interpenetration of linguistic meaning and objective reality and （2） the social nature of verbal or literary expression.
