Ex situ conserva.ion in seed ba.ks is a.potentia. complementa.y conserva.ion stra.egy for na.ive pla.t species.It is well esta.lished tha. ex situ seed ba.king of na.ive wild pla.ts prolongs seed via.ility a.d thereby preserves genetic a.d species diversity for future use.We eva.ua.ed ex situ stora.e potentia. of eight ha.ophytic species from deserts in the United a.a. Emira.es(Ua.)by studying seed germina.ion.Specifica.ly,we exa.ined the germina.ility of freshly collected seeds a.d seeds stored for three yea.s in a.seed ba.k.We a.so exa.ined the effect of light conditions on fresh a.d stored seed germina.ion.Fresh seeds of seven of the eight species tested ha. a.higher germina.ion ra.es under 12/12 h light/da.k fluctua.ions tha. did those exposed to tota. da.kness.Stora.e reduced light sensitivity in Ha.ocnemum strobila.eum,Sua.da.a.gyptia.a.Sa.sola.drummondii a.d Sa.sola.imbrica.a.but increa.ed the requirement for light in a.throcnemum ma.rosta.hyum.In a.a.a.is setifera.stora.e decrea.ed germina.ion percenta.e when there wa. a.12-hour light/da.k fluctua.ion,but increa.ed germina.ion ra.e when exposed to the da.k trea.ment.Stora.e significa.tly reduced germina.ion in both the light/da.k a.d da.k trea.ments in Sua.da.vermicula.a.a.d S.a.gyptia.a.Germina.ion speed a.so responded differently to stora.e;wherea. Timson's index significa.tly increa.ed in a.ma.rosta.hyum a.d H.strobila.eum,it significa.tly decrea.ed for S.drummondii,S.a.gyptia.a.a.d S.vermicula.a.Germina.ion of these species a. a.ra.ge of tempera.ures requires further testing;a.ditiona.ly,we strongly suggest tha. these la.ora.ory findings be complemented by field studies.

The a.ility of pla.ts to sa.ely reta.n seeds in the mother pla.t is a. a.a.tive mecha.ism described in ma.y desert pla.ts.However,resea.ch a.out dela.ed seed dispersa. species in the desert of the United a.a. Emira.es(Ua.)is la.king.This study a.ms to identify these dela.ed seed dispersa. species a.d a.sess the rela.ionships of the presence of dela.ed seed dispersa. with pla.t growth form,ha.it,spa.ia. dispersa.,a.titelechoric mecha.ism,a.d seed relea.e time.The rela.ionships between the presence of dela.ed seed dispersa. a.d the a.ove studied tra.ts were a.sessed by using the Pea.son Chi-squa.e test a.d Nonlinea. Principa. Components a.a.ysis(NLPCa..Results showed tha. a.tota. of 46 dela.ed seed dispersa. species were recorded(15.0%of 307 studied species)a.d the highest incidence occurred in the Fa.a.ea. fa.ily(17.4%).Dela.ed seed dispersa. species were predomina.tly perennia. pla.ts(73.9%)with spa.ia. restricted dispersa.(67.4%),which relea.ed seed in the dry sea.on(45.7%).The domina.t groups of dela.ed seed dispersa. species were persistent fruits species a.d syna.tospermy(28.3%).a.l gra.inoids showed persistent lignified fruits,while prostra.e a.nua.s were ba.ica.pic species with myxospermy.Sa.dy ha.ita.s ha. the highest number of dela.ed seed dispersa. species(54.3%),wherea. sa.t fla.s ha. the lowest(23.9%).In the desert of the Ua.,dela.ed seed dispersa. species sprea. seeds until the end of the dry a.d windy sea.on,thus brea.ing seed dorma.cy a. this time a.d ensuring seed germina.ion in the next a.riva. of the ra.ny sea.on.This morphologica. a.d ecologica. a.a.ta.ion of dela.ed dispersa. species is essentia. to the surviva. a.d susta.na.le development of vegeta.ion in desert environments.

Iron deficiency a.emia.is one of the most common micronutrient deficient conditions a.ound the globe with va.ious consequences,including the wea.ened immune system.Quercetin is widely distributed biofla.onoid;it ha. been deba.ed for its dua. roles in iron regula.ion.Quercetin-iron intera.tion in the body is a.complex mecha.ism which ha. not been completely understood.The present study a.med to investiga.e the effect of quercetin on iron supplementa.ion in iron deficiency a.emia.a.d on i NOS expression in splenic ma.ropha.es.The ra. model of iron deficiency a.emia.wa. induced by feeding low iron diet to wea.ling ra.s for 20 da.s.The a.ima.s were then a.ministered with ferrous sulfa.e,quercetin,a.d their combina.ion for 30 da.s.Blood pa.a.eters,histopa.hologica. a.a.ysis,iron stora.e,CD68,i NOS a.d SLC40 expression in ra. spleen were investiga.ed.Our results showed tha. quercetin regula.ed iron a.sorption,despite SLC40 down-expression,indica.ing possible a.terna.e route of iron tra.sport,a.d tha. quercetin modula.ed i NOS production in splenic ma.ropha.es..
