Photochemical production of ozone in marine boundary layer in the sea of Japan:Results of the Rishiri Fall Experiment campaign

The Rishiri Fall Experiment (RISFEX ) campaign was performed in September 2003 at Rishiri island (45.07 N,141.12 E,and 35 m asl) in the sea of Japan to investigate photochemical production of ozone in the marine boundary layer. Total peroxy radicals ROx (HO2 + RO2) and NOx (NO + NO2) were measured together with other chemical species and physical parameters relevant to ozone production. The ozone production rate (P(O3)) was estimated from measured peroxy radicals and was found to be highly variable between days,with 30-min averaged midday values varying from 0.2 to 1.7 ppbv/h (ppbv refers to part per billion by volume). The daytime mean P(O3) for the air masses from relatively clean NE sector is close to zero,but significantly higher for air masses from more polluted W and SE sector,suggesting the impact of transport of pollutants on the remote local ozone production. The experimentally determined P(O3) is compared with those derived from a time-dependent box model based on Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling (RACM),and both the methods give the results generally in agreement. The model calculation shows that HO2 + NO reaction contributes most to ozone production,ca. 60% at midday,followed by the reactions of CH3O2 and ISOP (peroxy radicals formed from isoprene) with NO which account for ca. 13% and 10% to ozone production,respectively,at noon. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the ozone production during the measurement period is within NOx-limited regime.

An investigation at Cape Hedo, Japan, from 2005 to 2006, focused on the long-range transport of organic aerosol （OA） from the Asian continent. An Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer was used to investigate the OA data collected over the study. OA concentrations were low from July to September and peaked during March and April. Based on air mass origins, four OA source regions were identified： northern China, southern China, Japan, and Korea. OA concentrations measured at Cape Hedo from the four sources did not exhibit large differences. Conversely, the frequencies of the air masses reaching Cape Hedo from the different regions varied considerably. Northern China was identified as the primary source of organic aerosols at Cape Hedo. Examination of variations in the ratio of m/z 44 to OA concentrations with transport time showed that OAs were partially oxidized during transport

Gaseous peroxides play important roles in atmospheric chemistry. To understand the pathways of the formation and removal of peroxides, atmospheric peroxide concentrations and their controlling factors were measured from 7：00 to 20：00 in September, October, and November 2013 at a heavily trafficked residential site in Beijing, China, with average concentrations of hydrogen peroxide（H2O2） and methyl hydroperoxide（MHP） at 0.55 ppb and 0.063 ppb, respectively. H2O2 concentrations were higher in the afternoon and lower in the morning and evening, while MHP concentrations did not exhibit a regular diurnal pattern. Both H2O2 and MHP concentrations increased at dusk in most cases. Both peroxides displayed monthly variations with higher concentrations in September. These results suggested that photochemical activity was the main controlling factor on variations of H2O2 concentrations during the measurement period. Increasing concentrations of volatile organic compounds emitted by motor vehicles were important contributors to H2O2 and MHP enrichment. High levels of H2O2 and MHP concentrations which occurred during the measurement period probably resulted from the transport of a polluted air mass with high water vapor content passing over the Bohai Bay, China.

Vertical profiles of aerodynamic size distribution for airborne particles over Yangtze River Delta

Simultaneous aerosol samplings were carried out at three island sites in the Bohai Bay and the East China Sea;Tuoji Island, China(38.18 °N, 120.74°E), Fukue Island, Nagasaki Pref. Japan(32.75°N, 128.68°E), and Cape Hedo, Okinawa Pref. Japan(26.87°N, 128.25°E). TSP and PM2.5 were collected and analysed. Sampling was done on Oct. 10-12, 13-16, 18-22, and Dec.10-14, 22-25, 26-29, 2012 at Tuoji Island site and on Oct. 11-17 and Dec. 11-17, 2012 both at Fukue Island site and Cape Hedo Okinawa site. 31 kinds of metallic elements were analysed by means of ICP-MS spectrometry. Mass concentrations of PM2.5 were high in the order of Tuoji Island(48.3±4.5 μg/m3) > Fukue Island(13.9±1.5 μg/m3) > Cape Hedo(13.2±0.9 μg/m3). Concentrations of metallic elements were highest at Tuoji Island site in most cases, while Na was highest at Cape Hedo site and V, As, and Se were highest at Fuke Island site. Na of sea salt origin showed the largest contribution at Fukue and Cape Hedo, while Al and Ca of soil origin showed the largest contribution at Tuoji Island to the mass concentration of aerosols. Measurements of long-range transported air pollutants were carried out on the top of Mt. Fuji under collaboration with Prof. George Lin’s group(National Central University, Taiwan). Transboundary pollution from China travelling in the free troposphere and local pollution ascending the mountain slope could be clearly distinguished on the basis of the measurements of metallic elements and hydrocarbons.

Based on the aircraft observations in the summer of 2003, we have studied the aerodynamic size distributions of airborne particles at altitudes ranging from 400 m to 2800 m over the central and southern areas of Jiangsu province located in Yangtse River Delta of China. The sizes of airborne particles are measured to be in a range of 0.47- 30 μm with 57 channels, and their number concentrations, surface area concentrations and mass concentrations are also measured. The results show that the concentrations of airborne particles are very low above an altitude of 2000 m and the size distributions present a specific multi-peak mode by using insufficient samples. Below 1000 m, however, the concentrations of particles increase obviously, and their size distribution is similar to that at the ground level. The study also indicates that the concentrations, size distributions and median diameters of airborne particles above and below the boundary layer are very different, displaying different pollution features. Meanwhile, the results also show that the pollution level of airborne particles has a descending tendency with altitude increasing.

为了研究森林衰退的原因,于2000,2001和2002年的8月,分别选择出现森林衰退的日本奥日光白根山落叶树森林和未出现森林衰退的长野县大芝高原红松森林设立监测点,对光化学氧化剂臭氧(O3)和过氧化物的浓度进行监测,同时利用人工气候室对森林植物山毛榉和白桦进行了50×10-9O3、100×10-9O3和50×10-9O3+2×10-9～3×10-9过氧化物(过氧化氢(H2O2)及甲基过氧化氢(MHP))的暴露实验.野外监测结果表明,监测期间奥日光和长野的O3平均浓度相同,奥日光的H2O2及MHP平均浓度均高于长野;大气中的H2O2和MHP总是与O3共存,并且其浓度随O3浓度的增加而增加.暴露实验结果表明,暴露于50×10-9O3+2×10-9～3×10-9过氧化物的山毛榉和白桦出现了不同于O3暴露的叶片伤害症状;与100×10-9O3相比,50×10-9O3+2×10-9～3×10-9过氧化物导致植物出现了严重的叶片伤害和显著的光合速率下降.研究结果表明,除O3外,大气中的过氧化物也是导致森林衰退的原因之一.
