The Effect of Dexamethasone versus Methylprednisolone in the Treatment of COVID-19 Patients in Jordan

Background: Previous studies focused on the treatment effect of steroids versus no steroids in treating severe COVID-19 patients, a few studies evaluated outcomes for treating those patients with either dexamethasone or methylprednisolone. Currently, we evaluate the difference in mortality associated with treating COVID-19 patients with dexamethasone versus methylprednisolone. Methods: With a retrospective multicenter study, records were reviewed for the admitted patients with severe COVID-19 during the peak of the severe COVID-19 pandemic. All admitted patients on dexamethasone or methylprednisolone were included. Patients were analyzed as all populations and propensity scores matched patients. Propensity scores were calculated for several confounders by the generalized linear model, and a “greedy” near-neighbor matching algorithm was used. Continuous variables with nonnormal distribution were analyzed by Wilcoxon signed rank test. Chi-squared and Fischer exact test analyzed categorical variables. P-values were adjusted by the Bonferroni method for both data cohorts. Body mass index was in categories. Radiological findings were divided into five categories. The outcomes: mortality, the need for home oxygen therapy, recovery, and residual symptoms on discharge were analyzed by an independent two-sample test for equality of proportions (with Yates correction), and logistic regression analysis. Results: Among the 1128 reviewed records, patients on dexamethasone or methylprednisolone were 1071, and the propensity score-matched patients were 784: dexamethasone 393 and methylprednisolone 391. There was no significant difference in the characteristics of patients between the two steroids (p-value and adjusted p-value > 0.05) for most variables. PSM adjusted a few discrepant variables before analysis. The outcome of the unmatched patients demonstrated dexamethasone benefit in the need for home oxygen therapy ( 0.05). Produced water from an oil extraction site in South Kuwait was sampled after primary oil – water separation had been carried out. The produced water was filtered through a mixture of activated charcoal and esterified cellulosic material gained from spent coffee grounds as a tertiary adsorption treatment. The earth-alkaline metal ions and heavy metals were separated from the de-oiled produced water by addition of either sodium or potassium hydroxide in the presence of carbon dioxide or by direct addition of solid sodium carbonate. The resulting filtrate gave salt of industrial purity upon selective crystallization on evaporation.

Prevelance of Bovine Cysticercosis in Egypt and the Cysticidal Effect of Two Extracts Obtained from Balanites aegyptiaca and Moringa oleifera on Mice Model Affected with T. saginata Cysticerci

The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of bovine cysticercosis in both cattle and buffloas, in Egypt and to assess the cysticidal efficacy of Balanites aegyptiaca fruits (B. aegyptiaca) and Moringa oleifera seeds (M. oleifera) extracts in experimentally infected mice. The study detected the level of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) to monitor the immune and inflammatory responses of experimentally infected mice. Through meat inspection, a total number of 2125 male bovine, 2 to 5 years old, (1125 cattle and 1000 buffloes) were examined under the authority of Albsatine and Alwaraq official abattoirs in Cairo Governorate, Egypt covering the period extended from March 2022 to April 2023. The overall prevalence of the disease among bovine was 7.8% (6.31% of cattle and 9.5% of buffloes). Besides, B. aegyptiaca and M. oleifera extracts showed cysticidal activity in experimentally infected mice. A decrease in the numbers of cysticerci was found in all treated mice groups, and up to 88% reduction was achieved in the B. aegyptiaca-treated group;higher than that was recorded in both M. oleifera (72.23%) and albendazole-treated ones (80.56%). Postmortem findings proved that M. oleifera and B. aegyptiaca reduced cysticerci numbers comparable to a commercial anthelmintic. The study showed a significant decrease (P 0.001) in TNF-α levels after treatment with Balanites and Moringa extracts, compared with the untreated control and the albendazole-treated groups.

The utilisation of oil palm fibre(OPF)and pineapple leaf fibres(PALF)as reinforcement materials for bio-phenolic composites is growing especially in automotive lightweight *** major aim of this current study is to investigate the influence of alkali(Ca(OH)_(2)) treatment on pure and hybrid *** effects of enhancements in chemical interactions were evaluated by the Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrometer(FTIR).Dynamic Mechanical Analysis(DMA)and Thermogravimetric Analysis(TGA)performance of untreated reinforcements(OPF and PALF)and treated(OPF/OPF)composites at varying temperature and noted sufficient interfacial bonding contributing towards the improvements in thermal *** DMA results,the storage modulus improved with treated composites while the damping factor was ***,the treated hybrid composites exhibited significant improvements in thermal stability compared to untreated fibre *** results indicated that alkali calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH2(:T)incorporation in hybrid composites(OPF/PALF)results in increased tensile strength and modulus among all ***,the alkali-treated(Ca(OH)_(2))-treated pure composite(T/50%PALF),and hybrid composites(T/1OPF.1PALF)exhibited better flexural strength as compared with other *** contrast,the T/50%PALF showed higher flexural stress of 78.2 MPa,while the flexural modulus was recorded at 6503 *** can be proposed from the findings of this study that the alkali treatment(5%Ca(OH)_(2))can be utilised to improve the strength and efficiency of agriculture biomass to be used as reinforcements in ***,the hybridisation of bio-fibre composites has the potential as a novel variety of biodegradable and sustainable composites appropriate for several industrial and engineering applications.

Objective:To compare the prognostic factors of mortality among melioidosis patients between lognormal accelerated failure time(AFT),Cox proportional hazards(PH),and Cox PH with time-varying coefficient(TVC)***:A retrospective study was conducted from 2014 to 2019 among 453 patients who were admitted to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah,Kedah and Hospital Tuanku Fauziah,Perlis in Northern Malaysia due to confirmed-cultured *** prognostic factors of mortality from melioidosis were obtained from AFT survival analysis,and Cox’s models and the findings were compared by using the goodness of fit *** analyses were done by using Stata SE version ***:A total of 242 patients(53.4%)*** this study,the median survival time of melioidosis patients was 30.0 days(95%CI 0.0-60.9).Six significant prognostic factors were identified in the Cox PH model and Cox PH-TVC *** AFT survival analysis,a total of seven significant prognostic factors were *** results were found to be only a slight difference between the identified prognostic factors among the *** survival showed better results compared to Cox's models,with the lowest Akaike information criteria and best fitted Cox-snell ***:AFT survival analysis provides more reliable results and can be used as an alternative statistical analysis for determining the prognostic factors of mortality in melioidosis patients in certain situations.

Today,liver disease,or any deterioration in one’s ability to survive,is extremely common all around the *** research has indicated that liver disease is more frequent in younger people than in older *** the liver’s capability begins to deteriorate,life can be shortened to one or two days,and early prediction of such diseases is *** several machine learning(ML)approaches,researchers analyzed a variety of models for predicting liver disorders in their early *** a result,this research looks at using the Random Forest(RF)classifier to diagnose the liver disease early *** dataset was picked from the University of California,Irvine ***’s accomplishments are contrasted to those of Multi-Layer Perceptron(MLP),Average One Dependency Estimator(A1DE),Support Vector Machine(SVM),Credal Decision Tree(CDT),Composite Hypercube on Iterated Random Projection(CHIRP),K-nearest neighbor(KNN),Naïve Bayes(NB),J48-Decision Tree(J48),and Forest by Penalizing Attributes(Forest-PA).Some of the assessment measures used to evaluate each classifier include Root Relative Squared Error(RRSE),Root Mean Squared Error(RMSE),accuracy,recall,precision,specificity,Matthew’s Correlation Coefficient(MCC),F-measure,and *** has an RRSE performance of 87.6766 and an RMSE performance of 0.4328,however,its percentage accuracy is *** widely acknowledged result of this work can be used as a starting point for subsequent *** a result,every claim that a new model,framework,or method enhances forecastingmay be benchmarked and demonstrated.
