Digital Soil Mapping Using Artificial Neural Networks and Terrain-Related Attributes

Detailed soil surveys involve costly and time-consuming work and require expert knowledge. Since soil surveys provide information to meet a wide range of needs, new methods are necessary to map soils quickly and accurately. In this study, multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks(ANNs) were developed to map soil units using digital elevation model(DEM) attributes. Several optimal ANNs were produced based on a number of input data and hidden units. The approach used test and validation areas to calculate the accuracy of interpolated and extrapolated data. The results showed that the system and level of soil classification employed had a direct effect on the accuracy of the results. At the lowest level, smaller errors were observed with the World Reference Base(WRB)classification criteria than the Soil Taxonomy(ST) system, but more soil classes could be predicted when using ST(7 soils in the case of ST vs. 5 with WRB). Training errors were below 11% for all the ANN models applied, while the test error(interpolation error) and validation error(extrapolation error) were as high as 50% and 70%, respectively. As expected, soil prediction using a higher level of classification presented a better overall level of accuracy. To obtain better predictions, in addition to DEM attributes, data related to landforms and/or lithology as soil-forming factors, should be used as ANN input data.

A Scarce Presentation of <i>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</i>, Case Report

Here, we report a case of 24-year-old female who experienced fever, weight loss, and headache by the termination of her pregnancy after 24 weeks. She was admitted due to multiple generalized tonic clonic (GTC) seizures and loss of consciousness. Her lab data and histological findings were insignificant as well as negative mycobacterium culture. Her brain MRI detected multiple enhanced brain lesions on T2 weighted images. Overall, she went under empiric anti-TB treatment for a year and had a complete recovery. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of brain tuberculoma with negative histological findings and brain tissue culture who responded to an empiric anti-TB regimen.

3 Case Reports of Fulminant Hepatitis A after Karballa Pilgrimage

Introduction: Fulminant hepatitis is a very rare disease that occurs as an acute liver failure within eight weeks of the onset of symptoms following hepatitis A in adults or in patients with a history of chronic hepatitis B or C [1]. Case presentation: There were three cases in this research. The first case was a self-employed male patient aged 26 years from Gaz Borkhar, admitted to Al-Zahral Hospital on January 1, 2016 for fever, chills and vomiting. The second patient was a 20-year-old male athlete from Lenjan and was hospitalized on May 3, 2016 for fever, chills, anorexia, yellowing of the skin, and low consciousness. The third case was a 20-year-old male employee from Isfahan who visited Al-Zahra Hospital for developing nausea, vomiting, and discolored urine, followed by icterus. Conclusion: all patients were young without any underlying disease. Although the disease had a very progressive course leading to coma, all cases fortunately survived through supportive measures and returned to their normal lives.

Geographical mapping and Bayesian spatial modeling of malaria incidence in Sistan and Baluchistan province,Iran

ObjectiveTo present the geographical map of malaria and identify some of the important environmental factors of this disease in Sistan and Baluchistan province, Iran.MethodsWe used the registered malaria data to compute the standard incidence rates (SIRs) of malaria in different areas of Sistan and Baluchistan province for a nine-year period (from 2001 to 2009). Statistical analyses consisted of two different parts: geographical mapping of malaria incidence rates, and modeling the environmental factors. The empirical Bayesian estimates of malaria SIRs were utilized for geographical mapping of malaria and a Poisson random effects model was used for assessing the effect of environmental factors on malaria SIRs.ResultsIn general, 64 926 new cases of malaria were registered in Sistan and Baluchistan Province from 2001 to 2009. Among them, 42 695 patients (65.8%) were male and 22 231 patients (34.2%) were female. Modeling the environmental factors showed that malaria incidence rates had positive relationship with humidity, elevation, average minimum temperature and average maximum temperature, while rainfall had negative effect on malaria SIRs in this province.ConclusionsThe results of the present study reveals that malaria is still a serious health problem in Sistan and Baluchistan province, Iran. Geographical map and related environmental factors of malaria can help the health policy makers to intervene in high risk areas more efficiently and allocate the resources in a proper manner.
