Background:In 2017,large-scale flowering,seeding,and dying events of dwarf bamboo(Sasa borealis)occurred in a wide range in central Japan for the first time in 120 *** phenomenon of ***,like the mast seeding of trees,could be expected to provide a large amount of food for seed-eating rodents and gradually affect their ecology and population *** captured rodents in survey plots in a secondary broad-leaved forest with the phenomenon from 2018 to 2019 to investigate the species,the number of individuals,growing stage,sex,and body *** addition,we also compared the capture data for 2 years(2018–2019)with that for the mast seeding year(2017)and 6 years before it(2011–2016).Results:The mast seeding of *** greatly increased the population size of rodents,especially Apodemus speciosus and ***,Eothenomys smithii did not show such an *** of the captured rodent individuals were already adults at the time of new capture,and the proportion of male juveniles was extremely *** results suggest that the mast seeding of *** created unusually rich food availability for the population concentration of rodents due to their ***,body mass was not significantly different before and after the mast *** addition,the increased populations of the two Apodemus species did not decline 2 years after the *** masting,contrary to the previously reported decrease of rodent populations after tree ***:Our results indicate that the mast seeding of *** affected the population dynamics of Apodemus species over a long time and their individual composition of different growth ***,it did not affect their body mass.

Debris flow simulations are useful for predicting the sediment supplied to watersheds from upstream areas. However, the topographic conditions upstream are more complicated than those downstream and the relationship between the topographic conditions and debris flow initiation is not well understood. This study compared the use of several entrainment rate equations in numerical simulations of debris flows to examine the effect of topographic conditions on the flow. One-dimensional numerical simulations were performed based on the shallow water equations and three entrainment rate equations were tested. These entrainment rate equations were based on the same idea that erosion and the deposition of debris flows occur via the difference between the equilibrium and current conditions of debris flows, while they differed in the expression of the concentration, channel angle, and sediment amount. The comparison was performed using a straight channel with various channel angles and a channel with a periodically undulating surface. The three entrainment rate equations gave different amounts of channel bed degradation and hydrographs for a straight channel with a channel angle greater than 21° when water was supplied from upstream at a steady rate. The difference was caused by the expression of the entrainment rate equations. For channels with little undulation, the numerical simulations gave results almost identical to those for straight channels with the same channel angle. However, for channels with large undulations, the hydrographs differed from those for straight channels with the same channel angle when the channel angle was less than 21°. Rapid erosion occurred and the hydrograph showed a significant peak, especially in cases using the entrainment equation expressed by channel angle. Specific surface free energy (SSFE) of natural calcium fluorapatite from the same mother rock and synthesized barium chlorapatite from the same lot was determined using contact angle of water and formamide droplets, compared with grown length of crystal face (h). The experimentally obtained SSFEs have different values even for the same index faces of the different crystals. The SSFEs also have wide distribution for each face of crystals. Observed SSFE is considered to be not only the SSFE of ideally flat terrace face, but also includes the contribution of strep free energy. Though the crystals we experimentally obtained were growth form, the relationship between SSFE and h was almost proportional, which looks like satisfying Wulff’s relationship qualitatively. The slope of SSFE versus h line shows the driving force of crystal growth, and the line for larger crystal has less steep slope. The driving force of crystal growth for larger crystal is smaller, which also means that the chemical potential is larger for larger crystal. The individuality of crystals for the same lot can be explained by the difference of the chemical potential of each crystal.

Design of Medical Devices Using Spongy Sheet Composed of Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen

This research aims to obtain useful information for development of medical devices such as wound dressing and tissue anti-adhesive product, using a spongy sheet composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) and collagen (Col). The spongy sheets were manufactured by freeze vacuum drying of HA and Col aqueous solution, followed by UV irradiation to introduce intermolecular crosslinks between Col molecules. These spongy sheets are referred to as Sponge-A (ratio of HA/Col = 5/1) and Sponge-B (ratio of HA/Col = 5/5). Both surfaces of Sponge-A and Sponge-B treated with UV irradiation for 15 minutes are referred to as Sponge-A-15 and Sponge-B-15, respectively. The weight change of spongy sheet was determined by immersing a peace of spongy sheet in water at 37°C. The weight of sponge-A-15 collected 1/2, 1, 3, 7 days after immersion in water was 63.5%, 62.1%, 56.6%, 54.4% of the original weight, respectively. The weight of Sponge-B-15 was 78.3%, 76.7%, 79.1%, 71.9% of the original weight, respectively. The weight change of spongy sheet was determined by immersing a peace of spongy sheet in water containing collagenase at 37°C. The weight of Sponge-A-15 collected 6, 8, 10, 12 hours after immersion in water containing collagenase (0.0005 w/v%) was 65.7%, 59.8%, 57.9%, 55.2% of the original weight, respectively. The weight of Sponge-B-15 was 63.5%, 52.1%, 42.0%, 43.2% of the original weight, respectively. This spongy sheet is considered to have the unique structure, where HA molecules are entrapped in an intermolecular cross-linked network structure of Col molecules. AIM： To develop the effective technology for reconstruction of a liver organ in vitro using a bio-artificial liver. METHODS： We previously reported that a radial-flow bioreactor （RFB） could provide a three-dimensional highdensity culture system. We presently reconstructed the liver organoid using a functional human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line （FLC-5） as hepatocytes together with mouse immortalized sinusoidal endothelial cell （SEC） line M1 and mouse immortalized hepatic stellate cell （HSC） line A7 as non parenchymal cells in the RFB. Two × 10^7 FLC-5 cells were incubated in the RFB. After 5 d, 2 × 10^7 A7 cells were added in a similar manner followed by another addition of 10^7 M1 cells 5 d later. After three days of perfusion, some cellulose beads with the adherent cells were harvested. The last incubation period included perfusion with 200 nmol/L swinholide A for 2 h and then the remaining cellulose beads along with adherent cells were harvested from the RFB. The cell morphology was observed by transmission electron microscopy （TEM） and scanning electron microscopy （SEM）. To assess hepatocyte function, we compared mRNA expression for urea cycle enzymes as well as albumin synthesis by FLC-5 in monolayer cultures compared to those of single-type cultures and cocultures in the RFB. RESULTS： By transmission electron microscopy, FLC-5, M1, and A7 were arranged in relation to the perfusion side in a liver-like organization. Structures resembling bile canaliculi were seen between FCL-5 cells. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated fenestrae on SEC surfaces. The number of vesiculo-vacuolar organelles （WO） and fenestrae increased when we introduced the actin-binding agent swinholide-A in the RFB for 2h. With respect to liver function, urea was found in the medium, and expression of mRNAs encoding arginosuccinate synthetase and arginase increased when the three cell types were cocultured in the RFB. However, albumin synthesis decreased. CONCLUSION： Co-culture

The purpose of this study is to prepare a nursing protocol for preventing discontinuation of treatments using a method other than physical restraint during acute exacerbation of chronic heart failure in patients with impaired cognitive function. For the first stage of the study, we prepared a draft of the nursing protocol based on a basic survey. For the second stage, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 nurses specialized in chronic heart failure and 10 nurses in dementia case to ensure content validity of the draft protocol. For the third stage, we examined the possibility of clinical application of the revised version of the protocol draft prepared in the second stage of the study. For assessment items, significant points of nursing care, and specific nursing care practice in this revised version, 154 subjects (93.9%) considered effective for patients, in terms of prevention of treatment discontinuation using a method other than physical restraint. All items and contents were considered useful by more than 60% of the nurses. Considering that the nurses working in the clinical setting reported 93.9% of usefulness, we concluded that this nursing protocol remained valid at a certain level. We also received a comment from the certified nurses that we should include the basic contents for newly graduated nurses. We consider that this nursing protocol will be also useful for newly graduated nurses to acquire knowledge. It helped to standardize nursing care in order to predict potential risks for patients with impaired cognitive function.
