The Alpe Arami Story: Triumph of Data over Prejudice

The Alpe Arami garnet peridotite of the Southern Swiss Alps is associated with eclogites and included within quartzofeldspathic gneisses. Controversy has swirled around the depth of origin of this massif since the 1970s when application of the newly-developed technique of thermobarometry suggested a depth of last equilibration of greater than 120 kin. Such controversy accelerated in 1996 when we reported microstructural evidence of extensive precipitation of ilmenite and spinel from olivine and proposed a much greater depth of origin. Subsequent experiments showed that it was possible to dissolve the observed amount of TiO2 in olivine, but only at depths in excess of 300 kin, agreeing with the earlier proposal. In 1999 we added new, independent, evidence concerning exsolution of high-pressure clinoenstatite from diopside that in-and-of-itself required a depth of origin in excess of 250 km. Subsequently, we also added evidence from the surrounding eclogites of very high pressures and experimental evidence that the pyroxenes included in the amoeboid garnets of this rock had exsolved from a majoritic parent at perhaps even greater pressures. In refutation of the first two of these observations, suggestions were made that （i） we had made a serious error in our estimate of how much ilmenite was present in olivine （and therefore how much TiO2 had been dissolved in olivine）; （ii） the ilmenite had not been exsolved from olivine but former titanian clinohumite had been present and broke down to yield the ilmenite; （iii） the pyroxene exsolved from diopside had been high-temperature clinoenstatite. In all three of these cases, the alternatives offered were claimed to be accommodated at low pressures. Here we review the essence of this controversy and show that the only scenario that can explain all of the data is the one that we originally proposed; indeed, the more recent data have strongly supported that interpretation and pushed the minimum origin of the massif to depths ap

Crustal Signature of δ^(13)C and Nitrogen Content in Microdiamonds from Erzgebirge, Germany: Ion Microprobe Studies

The study of δ13CCpDB （Pee Dee Belemnite） and nitrogen contents in 1 to 5-pm-diameter microdinmonds included in garnets from the qnartz-feldspathic gneisses （Erzgehirge, Germany） was performed in situ with the Nano-scale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer. The results revealed that there were two stages of diamond crystallization from a C-O-H supeeritical fluid rich in biogenic carbon and diverse minor elements of crustal origin. The δ13CCpDB Of the Erzgebirge diamond of the first stage falls in the range -17‰ to 19‰, with an average value of -17.8‰; the average content of nitrogen is 820 ppm. Diamonds of the second stage are characterized by δ13CPDB=-21.5‰ to -25.5‰, with an average value of -23.24‰; the average nitrogen content is non-homogeneously scattered from 740 ppm to 3 370 ppm among 6 diamonds situated in garnets within the same polished rock slide. Both diamond of the first stage and diamond of the second stage carbon reservoirs belong to biogenic matter, therefore confirming deep subduction of the continental crust sediments and their subsequent exhumation during the Variscan orogeny.

Vole preference of bilberry along gradients of simulated moose density and site productivity

Browsing by large herbivores might either increase or decrease preference for the plant by other herbivores,depending on the plant *** a cafeteria test,we studied the preference by root voles(Microtus oeconomus[Pallas,1776])for bilberry(Vaccinium myrtillus L.)previously subjected to 4 levels of simulated moose(Alces alces[Linnaeus,1758])*** different levels of moose density were simulated at population densities relevant for Fennoscandian conditions,in exclosures situated along a site productivity *** expected:(i)voles to prefer bilberry from high productivity sites over low productivity sites;(ii)voles to prefer browsed bilberry,if plants allocate resources to compensatory growth or to avoid browsed bilberry if plants allocate resources to defense;(iii)these effects to increase with increasing simulated moose density;and(iv)the concentration of plant chemicals and the plant morphology to explain vole ***,we predicted that voles would prefer:(i)plants with high nitrogen content;(ii)plants with low content of defensive substances;and(iii)tall plants with long *** preferred bilberry from the high productivity sites compared to the low productivity *** also found an interaction between site productivity and simulated moose density,where voles preferred unbrowsed plants at low productivity sites and intermediate levels of browsing at high productivity *** was no effect of plant chemistry or morphology on vole *** conclude that moose browsing impacts the food preference of *** the current high densities of moose in Fennoscandia,this could potentially influence vole food selection and population dynamics over large geographical areas.

Rapid Method for the Determination of Total Monosaccharide in <i>Enterobacter cloacae</i>Strains Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to quantify total monosaccharide content in the bacterium Enterobacter cloacae and several of its biofilm mutants. Bacterial biofilm samples were grown on trypticase soy agar, and 30 μL aliquots of aqueous sample bacterial plus biofilm were deposited into the center of barium fluoride crystals and dried at 50°C for 1-hour before being scanned by FTIR. The total amounts of monosaccharides were estimated using the absorbance of the mono-saccharide peak, 1192 - 958 cm–1, and normalized using the amide ii peak, 1585 - 1483 cm–1. This method provided a linear correlation between the absorbance of the monosaccharide peak and concentration of monosaccharide in standard monosaccharides, fructose, glucose, mannose, and rhamnose, over a concentration range of 0.5 - 2.0 mg/mL.

Magnetic analyses of isosceles tricobalt(ii) complexes containing two types of octahedral high-spin cobalt(ii) ions

The observed magnetic data for two isosceles tricobalt(ii) complexes have been successfully analyzed, considering the axial distortion around each cobalt(ii) ion, the local spin-orbit coupling, the anisotropic exchange interactions, and the intermolecular exchange interactions. The complexes each contains two types of octahedral high-spin cobalt(ii) ions (CoA and CoB) in the shape of an isosceles triangle (CoA1–CoB–CoA2), and the contribution of the orbital angular momentum is significant. The exchange interaction between the CoA and CoB ions is practically negligible (J = ~ 0), whereas the interaction between the CoA1 and CoA2 ions is ferromagnetic (J’ > 0) for both complexes.

Plecanatide-mediated activation of guanylate cyclase-C suppresses inflammation-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in Apc+/Min-FCCC mice

AIM To evaluate the effect of orally administered plecanatide on colorectal dysplasia in Apc^(+/Min-FCCC) mice with dextran sodium sulfate(DSS)-induced inflammation. METHODS Inflammation driven colorectal carcinogenesis was induced in Apc^(+/Min-FCCC) mice by administering DSS in their drinking water. Mice were fed a diet supplemented with plecanatide(0-20 ppm) and its effect on the multiplicity of histopathologically confirmed polypoid,flat and indeterminate dysplasia was evaluated. Plecanatide-mediated activation of guanylate cyclase-C(GC-C) signaling was assessed in colon tissues by measuring cyclic guanosine monophosphate(cG MP) by ELISA, protein kinase G-ii and vasodilator stimulated phosphoprotein by immunoblotting. Ki-67, c-myc and cyclin D1 were used as markers of proliferation. Cellular levels and localization of b-catenin in colon tissues were assessed by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Uroguanylin(UG) and GC-C transcript levels were measured by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). A mouse cytokine array panel was used to detect cytokines in the supernatant of colon explant cultures. RESULTS Oral treatment of Apc^(+/Min-FCCC) mice with plecanatide produced a statistically significant reduction in the formation of inflammation-driven polypoid, flat and indeterminate dysplasias. This anti-carcinogenic activity of plecanatide was accompanied by activation of cG MP/GC-C signaling mediated inhibition of wnt/b-catenin signaling and reduced proliferation. Plecanatide also decreased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines(IL-6, IL-1 TNF), chemokines(MIP-1, IP-10) and growth factors(GCSF and GMCSF) from colon explants derived from mice with acute DSS-induced inflammation. The effect of plecanatidemediated inhibition of inflammation/dysplasia on endogenous expression of UG and GC-C transcripts was measured in intestinal tissues.
