Vitamin A administration at birth promotes calf growth and intramuscular fat development in Angus beef cattle

Background: marbling, or intramuscular fat, is an important factor contributing to the palatability of beef. Vitamin A, through its active metabolite, retinoic acid, promotes the formation of new fat cells(adipogenesis). As intramuscular adipogenesis is active during the neonatal stage, we hypothesized that vitamin A administration during the neonatal stage would enhance intramuscular adipogenesis and ***: Angus steer calves(n = 30), in a completely randomized design, were randomly allotted to three treatment groups at birth, receiving 0, 150,000, or 300,000 IU of vitamin A at both birth and one month of age.A biopsy of the biceps femoris muscle was collected at two months of age. After weaning at 210 d of age, steers were fed a backgrounding diet in a feedlot until 308 d of age, when they were transitioned to a high concentrate finishing diet and implanted with trenbolone/estradiol/tylosin mixture. Steers were harvested at an average of 438 d of age. All diets were formulated to meet nutrient ***: Weaning weight and weight during the backgrounding phase were linearly increased(P min A level, though no difference in body weight was observed at harvest. Intramuscular fat of steers at 308 d of age, measured by ultrasound, quadratically increased(P min A level from 4.0±0.26 % to 4.9±0.26 %.Similarly, carcass marbling score in the ribeye quadratically increased(P ministration of vitamin A at birth increased weaning weight and enhanced marbling fat ***, vitamin A administration provides a practical method for increasing marbling and early growth of beef cattle.

AIm To evaluate the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) in early esophageal cancer(EC) performed in a highvolume tertiary cancer center. mETHODS A retrospective review of patients undergoing esophagectomy was performed and patients with c T1 N0 and c T2 N0 esophageal cancer by EUS were evaluated. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and treatment were reviewed. EUS staging was compared to surgical pathology to determine accuracy of EUS. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the cohort. Student's t test and Fisher's exact test or χ~2 test was used to compare variables. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine if clinical variables such as tumor location and tumor histology were associated with EUS *** Between 2000 and 2015, 139 patients with clinical stage Ⅰ or Ⅱ?A esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy were identified. There were 25(18%) female and 114(82%) male patients. The tumor location included the middle third of the esophagus in 11(8%) and lower third and gastroesophageal junction in 128(92%) patients. Ninety-three percent of patients had adenocarcinoma. Preoperative EUS matched the final surgical pathology in 73/139 patients for a concordance rate of 53%. Twenty-nine patients(21%) were under-staged by EUS; of those, 19(14%) had unrecognized nodal disease. Positron emission tomography(PET) was used in addition to EUS for clinical staging in 62/139 patients. Occult nodal disease was only found in 4 of 62 patients(6%) in whom both EUS and PET were negative for nodal involvement. CONCLUSION EUS is less accurate in early EC and endoscopic mucosal resection might be useful in certain settings. The addition of PET to EUS improves staging accuracy.

Alcohol-associated liver disease(ALD)is increasingly prevalent throughout the world(1).It remains the leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality worldwide and contributes to approximately 6%of global deaths(2).ALD encompasses a wide range of hepatic pathologies,including steatosis,steatohepatitis,fibrosis,and cirrhosis(3).Given the severe lack of therapeutic interventions available to reverse the progression of ALD,it is currently the leading indication for liver transplantation(4).Advancements within the field are needed to identify diagnostic biomarkers for early detection and to develop therapeutics to ameliorate hepatic dysfunction and pathologies associated with ALD.

BACKGROUND:Ectopic pancreas is defined as pancreatic tissue found outside its usual anatomical position,with no ductal or vascular communication with the native pancreas. We describe a case of ectopic pancreas of the small bowel and mesentery causing recurrent episodes of pancreatitis, initially suspected on computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(mRCP),and confirmed on histological review of the resection. mETHODS:A 67-year-old woman presented with clinical symptoms and biochemical evidence of *** had similar episodes over the past 30 years with unrevealing investigations,and was concluded to have idiopathic pancreatitis. She underwent CT and mRCP,with findings suggestive of ectopic pancreas,a diagnosis confirmed on histology of the resection. RESULTS:mRCP identified a mass in the proximal small bowel mesentery isointense to the native pancreas,with a small duct draining into a proximal jejunal *** resected specimen consisted of normal parenchyma with lobulated acinar tissue with scattered islets of Langerhans,an occasional ductular structure,and admixed areas of adipose *** patient remained asymptomatic with normal biochemistry six months post-operatively. CONCLUSION:In an individual with abdominal pain,elevated serum amylase/lipase,but imaging findings of a normal native pancreas,ectopic pancreatitis should be considered,and can be evaluated by CT and mRCP.

The usefulness of the apparent redox potential discontinuity(aRPD) in assessments of marine benthic habitat quality was explored at two intertidal mudflats along the north Pacific coast of Canada. Two transects were established at each intertidal site, with three sediment biogeochemistry cores collected from each transect four times over the summer of 2016. measurements of the sediment pore water dissolved oxygen(DO) content and redox(Eh) conditions were taken at the surface of the core(measured vertically), as well as at increasing depths(1 cm between readings) into the sediment(measured horizontally through predrilled holes in the biogeochemistry corer). While oxic, anoxic, oxidized, and reduced sediment pore water was observed above and below the aRPD, in general, sediment above the aRPD had higher DO content, and higher Eh values than sediment below the aRPD. Therefore, the aRPD depth can be used as a relative indicator of sediment pore water DO and Eh conditions: sediment with a deeper aRPD depth has more available DO, and the pore water has higher Eh values(more oxidized or less reduced) than sediment with a shallower aRPD depth. As such, the aRPD depth is a useful parameter to include in models that assess the quality of marine benthic habitats.

Enhanced magnetostrictive properties of lightly Pr-doped Fe83Ga17 alloys

This paper presents a traveltime inversion approach,using the reflection traveltimes from offset VSP data,to reconstruct the horizontal and vertical velocities for stratified anisotropic *** inverse problem is reduced to a set of linear equations,and solved by the singular value decomposition(SVD) *** validity of this inversion scheme is verified using two sets of synthetic data simulated using a finite-difference method,one for an isotropic model and the other for an elliptically anisotropic *** inversion result demonstrates that our anisotropic velocity inversion scheme may be applied to both isotropic and anisotropic media. The method is finally applied to a real offset VSP data set,acquired in an oilfield in northwestern China.

Fe83Ga17Prx alloys,where x=0,0.2,0.4,0.6 and 1.0,were prepared by a non-consumable vacuum arc melting technique under an inert argon gas *** crystal structure and surface morphologies of the alloys were studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEm),*** compositional variations were measured by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDXS).The magnetostriction coefficients of the alloys were measured by means of a differential resistive strain *** magnetism of the sample was measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer(VSm).The results show that the parent Fe83Ga17 alloy consists of a single A2 phase of bcc symmetry,whereas the Pr doped Fe83Ga17 alloys are composed of the A2 phase of bcc structure and a small volume fraction of PrGa2 as a secondary *** importantly,with increasing x,the magnetostriction coefficient of the Fe83Ga17Prx alloys first increases reaching a maximum saturation magnetostriction coefficient of192 ppm for x=0.6 at a magnetic field strength of 486 kA/m,then *** maximum represents a 400% increase over the parent alloy with a mere 0.6 at% Pr doping.

Simultaneous Preservation of Soil Structural Properties and Phospholipid Profiles: A Comparison of Three Drying Techniques

There is a need to simultaneously preserve evidence of interactions between the biological community and soil structural properties of a soil in as near an intact （natural） state as possible. Three dehydration techniques were implemented and assessed for their ability to minimise disruption of both biological and physical properties of the same arable soil sample. Dehydration techniques applied until samples were at constant weight were i） air-drying at 20℃ （AD）; ii） -80 ℃ freeze for 24 h, followed by freeze-drying （-80FD）; and iii） liquid nitrogen snap freeze, followed by freeze-drying （LNPD） and were compared to a moist control. Physical structure was determined and quantified in three dimensions using X-ray computed tomography and microbial phenotypic community composition was assessed using phospholipid fatty acid （PLPA） profiling. This study confirms that any form of dehydration, when preparing soil for simultaneous biological and physical analysis, will alter the soil physical properties, and cause some change in apparent community structure. Freeze-drying （both the LNFD and -80FD treatments） was found to minimise disruption （when compared to the moist control soil） to both the soil physical properties and the community structure and is a preferable technique to air-drying which markedly alters the size and character of the pore network, as well as the phenotypic profile. The LNFD was the preferred treatment over the -80FD treatment as samples show low variability between replicates and a fast turn-around time between samples. Therefore snap freezing in liquid nitrogen, followed by freeze drying is the most appropriate form of dehydration when two sets of data, both physical and biological, need to be preserved simultaneously from a soil core.
