In a recently published article in Asian Journal of Andrology, Ho et al.1 examine prevalence, attitudes, and treatment patterns related to sexual dysfunction in Asia and contrast them with those of Western society. They highlight the relative paucity of data with respect to erectile dysfunction （ED）, premature ejaculation, and hypogonadism in the Asian population.

Objective: To review our open partial nephrectomy (OPN) experience and compare to known robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) data to determine whether length of stay (LOS) and morbidity are significant drivers in the surgical approach employed for partial nephrectomy. methods: We reviewed our OPN experience during the last 3 years examining age, tumor size, LOS, pathology, blood loss, complications, recurences, and deaths. Results: Seventy-five patients underwent OPN during this period. mean age was 59 years, tumor size 2.8 cm, percent malignant 75%, estimated blood loss 350 cc. With a median follow-up of 18 months, there was one urinoma managed by drain-age, one pseudo aneurysm that required embolization and one pulmonary embolism that required anticoagulation. There were no readmissions, no tumor recurences, and no deaths. Our major complication rate was 4% as compared to other trials that re-ported major complication rates between 1% - 9% for RPN and between 3% - 24% for OPN. In the first half of the experience (n = 37), median LOS was 57 hours. Using a pathway encouraging early ambulation and smaller incisions in the second half of the experience (n = 38), median LOS was 35 hours. This is much shorter than reported RPN LOS of 62 - 67 hours and OPN LOS of 108 - 142 hours. Conclusion: OPN can be performed safely and effectively with one night hospital stay. This provides a more cost-effective approach to partial nephrectomy with similar or better complication rates and calls into question the main value drivers of RPN.

The laws of the Greek city-states and the Hellenistic Kingdoms dealt with all aspects of life in the community.1 The laws regulated the main political institutions of the community and gave rules to its officials about how to conduct public business. meetings of the Council and Assembly were run according to public statutes, and decrees submitted for approval had to conform to legal norms. All public officials were subject to a legal review of their conduct and could be prosecuted in court or punished by special magistrates.

Bile acids are implicated as etiologic agents in cancer of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including cancer of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, biliary tract, pancreas and colon/rectum. Deleterious effects of bile acid exposure, likely related to carcinogenesis, include: induction of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species; induction of DNA damage; stimulation of mutation; induction of apoptosis in the short term, and selection for apoptosis resistance in the long term. These deleterious effects have, so far, been reported most consistently in relation to esophageal and colorectal cancer, but also to some extent in relation to cancer of other organs. In addition, evidence is reviewed for an association of increased bile acid exposure with cancer risk in human populations, in specific human genetic conditions, and in animal experiments. A model for the role of bile acids in GI carcinogenesis is presented from a Darwinian perspective that offers an explanation for how the observed effects of bile acids on cells contribute to cancer development.

The nutrient composition and enzyme activities in larvae of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hbner), fed on high, medium or low gossypol cotton cultivars were examined at different time intervals. Significantly lower free fatty acid was observed in larvae fed for 6 h on high gossypol 'm9101' compared to larvae fed on the low (ZmS13) and intermediate (HZ401) gossypol cultivars. Significantly higher trypsin activity was observed in larvae fed on high gossypol 'm9101' for 24 h compared to those fed for 1, 4 and 6 h. Significantly higher catalase and total superoxide dismutase enzyme activities were observed in larvae of S. exigua fed on high gossypol 'm9101' compared with low gossypol cultivars 'ZmS13' and 'HZ401' for 1, 4, 6 and 24 h. However, significantly lower carboxylesterase and acetylcholinesterase enzyme activities were found in larvae fed on high gossypol 'm9101' compared with the other cultivars for 1, 4, 6 and 24 h. The interaction between cotton variety and beet armyworm infestation time significantly affected the carboxylesterase enzyme activity in S. exigua. The characterization of the effects of plant allelochemicals on herbivorous larvae is important for aiding understanding of plant-insect interaction as well as in devising solutions to pest problems by breeding plant resistance, identifying metabolic targets for insecticide development, etc.

Shallow shear-wave seismic reflection imaging, using a sledgehammer and mass energy source and standard processing, has become increasingly common in mapping near-surface geologic features, especially in water-saturated, unconsolidated sediments. Tests of the method in the mississippi Embayment region of the central United States show interpretable reflection arrivals in the depth range of 〈10 m to 〉100 m with the potential for increased resolution when compared with compressional-wave data. Shear-wave reflection prof＇des were used to help interpret the significance of neotectonic surface deformation at five sites in the mississippi Embayment. The interpreted profiles show a range of shallow structural styles that include reverse faulting, fault propagation folding, and reactivated normal faulting, and provide crucial subsurface evidence in support of paleoseismologic trenching and shallow drilling.

Shallow Hilbert curve patterns with easily programmable texture density were selected for laser texturing of stainless steel *** different texture path segment lengths(12 and 24 μm)and four different laser power percentages(5%,10%,15%,and 20%)were *** textured and smooth substrates were coated with thin polydopamine/polytetrafluoroethylene(PDA/PTFE)coatings for tribological property *** effects of texture density(texture area coverage)and laser power on the durability and friction of the coated surfaces were *** texturing the substrates improved the coating durability up to 25 times,reduced the friction coefficient,and prevented coating global *** textures fabricated with a laser power of 15%and a texture path segment length of 12 μm yielded the best coating *** textures provided the interlocking for the PTFE coating and thus prevented its global ***,the PTFE inside the texture grooves replenished the solid lubricant worn away in the wear track and prolonged the coating wear life.

Pitting Corrosion Investigation of Cantilever Beams Using F. E. method

Carbon steel cantilever beams are widely used in many applications in aerospace, civil and mechanical engineering. Pitting corrosion is a phenomenon which places severe limitations on the design of such applications. As such, understanding this phenomenon and the methods to deal with it, are of a great importance. This paper presents numerical investigation by using F. E. (Finite Element) simulation on the load carrying capacity of corroded cantilever beams with pitting corrosion damage. The pitting corrosion hole shape has been modeled using ASTm G46 Standard Guide. Several different cases of pitting corrosion, represented by hemispherical holes, were modeled and examined by using ANSYS computer program. Clamped edge constraint was used on one end, while the other end was free. In these F. E. models, element of Solid95 was used and comparison to Bernoulli-Euler theory was made. The effect of the radius of the pitting corrosion holes on the stresses in the beam was examined in comparison to yield stress. It has been found that the m. S. (margin of Safety) has been reduced gradually with increasing radii. Agreement with Bernoulli-Euler theory has been achieved only for small radii. moreover, three methods of pitting corrosion repairs were examined, together with Bernoulli-Euler theory comparison: 1) Regular surface repair;2) Extension surface repair;and 3) “Handy Removal”. It was found that extension surface repair has the highest m. S. value.
