background:Classic dichotic listening tests using speech stimuli result in right ear advantage,due to the dominant crossed pathway for speech and *** is presumed that similar crossed dominance could exist for non-speech stimuli ***,this is an attempt to develop and validate the dichotic nonspeech test using environmental stimuli and explore the effect of focused attention on this *** and method:Three lists of dichotic stimuli were created using these sounds with fifteen tokens in each *** professionals and non-professionals validated these *** estimation was obtained by administering the newly developed test on 70 adults and 70 children using a free-recall and forced-recall ***:The results showed a significant difference between the left ear and right scores where the left ear score was better than the right,depicting left ear advantage(LEA)for free recall condition in both *** the forced recall condition,LEA was not seen;rather the mean score was significantly higher in the attended ear,irrespective of the stimuli presented to the right or left *** test-retest reliability in free recall was good in both the ears and moderate for forced right ear ***:The novel test consistently showed LEA with good reliability and can be used to assess the hemispheric asymmetry in normal subjects and also in test batteries for the clinical population.

The development of antibiotics is regarded as one of the most significant scientific advances in modern medicine. before the commercialization of antibiotics, infectious diseases were catastrophic throughout history [1]. Penicillin was used to treat serious infections in the 1940s, but unfortunately, with the introduction of antibiotics came the emergence of antibiotic resistance [2,3]. Evolved and adapted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains are presently impacting community and healthcare systems across the globe [4].

Lunasin protease inhibitor concentrate decreases pro-infl ammatory cytokines and improves histopathological markers in dextran sodium sulfate-induced ulcerative colitis

Lunasin protease inhibitor concentrate(LPIC)is a novel combination of soy bioactive peptide lunasin,Kunitz and bowman-birk protease *** reported anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties of each one of them suggest LPIC as a promising candidate for the treatment of infl ammatory-related *** objective was to assess the in vivo anti-infl ammatory properties of ***,an in vitro test was performed in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-activated RAW264.7 murine macrophages by measuring the production of nitric oxide(NO),interleukin-6(IL-6),and tumor necrosis factorα(TNF-α)as infl ammatory *** the in vivo model,ulcerative colitis(UC)was induced in mice via oral administration of dextran sodium sulfate(DSS).LPIC treatment was performed via daily intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg body *** weight,visible blood in stool and stool consistency were scored daily as macroscopic indicators of disease *** blood was evaluated by the presence of hemoglobin in stool every third *** length,caecum weight,colonic myeloperoxidase activity(MPO),presence of pro-inflammatory cytokines in blood and colon,changes in the architecture,and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NOS)in colonic tissue were *** vitro,LPIC induced production of NO and maintained cytokine levels in comparison to activated untreated *** vivo,LPIC increased colonic bleeding and did not improve macroscopic markers of the disease,but reduced colonic IL-1βand IL-6,decreased systemic circulation of TNF-α,attenuated neutrophils infi ltration and i NOS expression in colonic tissue,and diminished the damage in colonic *** results suggest that combinations of peptides in LPIC may counteract the antiinfl ammatory properties in vitro;while in vivo,LPIC can signifi cantly reduce the histopathological damage,hence is a possible therapeutic strategy to attenuate UC.

Role of lithology, weathering and precipitation on water chemistry of lakes from Larsemann Hills and Schirmacher Oasis of East Antarctica

Schirmacher Oasis and Larsemann Hills areas represent two different periglacial environments of East Antarctica. Schirmacher Oasis is characterized by a vast stretch of ice-shelf in the north and East Antarctic Ice Sheet(EAIS) to its south. Whereas, in Larsemann Hills area the northern and north-western boundary is coastal area and EAIS in the southern part,exhibiting polar lowland between the marine and continental glacial ecosystems. Physico-chemical parameters of water samples from different lakes of both of these two distinct locations are quite contrasting and have indicated influence of lithology, weathering, evaporation and precipitation. The lake water chemistry in Larsemann Hills area is mainly governed by the lithology of the area while Schirmacher lakes exhibit influence of precipitation and rock composition. All major ions of lake waters indicate balanced ionic concentrations. The atmospheric precipitation has significantly modified the ionic distributions in the lakes and channels. Carbonation is the main proton supplying geochemical reactions involved in the rock weathering and this is an important mechanism which controls the hydrochemistry. The lake water hydrochemistry differs widely not only between two distant periglacial zones but also within a short distance of a single periglacial entity, indicating influence of territorial climate over hydrochemistry.

Gallbladder carcinoid masquerading as gallbladder carcinoma

bACKGROUND:Carcinoid of the gallbladder is *** it often presents as a gallbladder mass it may be confused with gallbladder carcinoma. METHODS:A 35-year-old lady presented with pain in the right upper abdomen,and was radiologically found to have a gallbladder mass.A provisional diagnosis of gallbladder carcinoma was *** revealed a 20×20 cm, exophytic,friable growth arising from the fundus of the *** was excised with segmentⅣb andⅤof the liver and regional lymphadenectomy. RESULT:Histopathological examination revealed it was a neuroendocrine carcinoma,atypical carcinoid of the gallbladder. CONCLUSION:Gallbladder carcinoid has a poor outcome, requires aggressive treatment,and should be considered as one of the rare but possible gallbladder lesions.

Recent advances in post autologous transplantation maintenance therapies in b-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas

Lymphomas constitute the second most common indication for high dose therapy(HDT) followed by autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation(autoHCT). The intent of administering HDT in these heterogeneous disorders varies from cure(e.g., in relapsed aggressive lymphomas) to disease control(e.g., most indolent lymphomas). Regardless of the underlying histology or remission status at transplantation, disease relapse remains the number one cause of post autoHCT therapy failure and mortality. The last decade has seen a proliferation of clinical studies looking at prevention of post auto-HCT therapy failure with various maintenance strategies. The benefit of such therapies is in turn dependent on disease histology and timing of transplantation. In relapsed, chemosensitive diffuse large b-cell lymphoma(DLbCL), although post auto-HCT maintenance rituximab seems to be safe and feasible, it does not provide improved survival outcomes and is not recommended. The preliminary results with anti- programmed death-1(PD-1) antibody therapy as post auto-HCT maintenance in DLbCL is promising but requires randomized validation. Similarly in follicular lymphoma, maintenance therapies including rituximab following auto-HCT should be considered investigational and offered only on a clinical trial. Rituximab maintenance results in improved progressionfree survival but has not yet shown to improve overall survival in mantle cell lymphoma(MCL), but given the poor prognosis with post auto-HCT failure in MCL, maintenance rituximab can be considered on a caseby-case basis. Ongoing trials evaluating the efficacy of post auto-HCT maintenance with novel compounds(e.g., immunomodulators, PD-1 inhibitors, proteasome inhibitors and bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors) will likely change the practice landscape in the near future for b cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas patients following HDT and auto-HCT.

Few-Shot Learning Enables Population-Scale Analysis of Leaf Traits in Populus trichocarpa

Plant phenotyping is typically a time-consuming and expensive endeavor,requiring large groups of researchers to meticulously measure biologically relevant plant traits,and is the main bottleneck in understanding plant adaptation and the genetic architecture underlying complex traits at population *** this work,we address these challenges by leveraging few-shot learning with convolutional neural networks to segment the leaf body and visible venation of 2,906 Populus trichocarpa leaf images obtained in the *** contrast to previous methods,our approach(a)does not require experimental or image preprocessing,(b)uses the raw RGb images at full resolution,and(c)requires very few samples for training(e.g.,just 8 images for vein segmentation).Traits relating to leaf morphology and vein topology are extracted from the resulting segmentations using traditional open-source image-processing tools,validated using real-world physical measurements,and used to conduct a genome-wide association study to identify genes controlling the *** this way,the current work is designed to provide the plant phenotyping community with(a)methods for fast and accurate image-based feature extraction that require minimal training data and(b)a new population-scale dataset,including 68 different leaf phenotypes,for domain scientists and machine learning *** of the few-shot learning code,data,and results are made publicly available.
