Intraoperative reperfusion assessment of human pancreas allografts using hyperspectral imaging(HSI)

Background:The most common causes of early graft loss in pancreas transplantation are insufficient blood supply and leakage of the intestinal ***,it is critical to monitor graft perfusion and oxygenation during the early post-transplant *** goal of our pilot study was to evaluate the utility of hyperspectral imaging(HSI)in monitoring the microcirculation of the graft and adequate perfusion of the intestinal anastomosis during pancreatic ***:We imaged pancreatic grafts and intestinal anastomosis in real-time in three consecutive,simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantations using the TIVITA®HSI ***,the intraoperative oxygen saturation(StO_(2)),tissue perfusion(near-infrared perfusion index,NIR),organ hemoglobin index(OHI),and tissue water index(TWI)were measured 15 minutes after reperfusion by ***:All pancreas grafts showed a high and homogeneous StO_(2)(92.6%±10.45%).Intraoperative HSI analysis of the intestinal anastomosis displayed significant differences of StO_(2)(graft duodenum 67.46%±5.60%*** jejunum:75.93%±4.71%,P<0.001)and TWI{graft duodenum:0.63±0.09[I(Index)]*** jejunum:0.72±0.09[I],P<0.001}.NIR and OHI did not display remarkable differences{NIR duodenum:0.68±0.06[I]*** jejunum:0.69±0.04[I],P=0.747;OHI duodenum:0.70±0.12[I]*** jejunum:0.68±0.13[I],P=0.449}.All 3 patients had an uneventful postoperative course with one displaying a Banff 1a rejection which was responsive to steroid ***:Our study shows that contact-free HSI has potential utility as a novel tool for real-time monitoring of human pancreatic grafts after reperfusion,which could improve the outcome of pancreas *** investigations are required to determine the predictive value of intraoperative HSI imaging.

Orthotopic liver transplantation for giant liver haemangioma: A case report

In liver haemangiomas, the risk of complication rises with increasing size, and treatment can be obligatory. Here we present a case of a 46-year-old female who suffered from a giant haemangioma causing severe portal hypertension and vena cava compression, leading to therapy refractory ascites, hyponatremia and venostasis-associated thrombosis with pulmonary embolism. The patients did not experience tumour rupture or consumptive coagulopathy. Surgical resection was impossible because of steatosis of the non-affected liver. Orthotopic liver transplantation was identified as the only treatment option. The patient's renal function remained stable even though progressive morbidity and organ allocation were improbable according to the patient's lab model for end-stage liver disease(lab MELD) score. Therefore, non-standard exception status was approved by the European organ allocation network "Eurotransplant". The patient underwent successful orthotopic liver transplantation 16 mo after admission to our centre. Our case report indicates the underrepresentation of morbidity associated with refractory ascites in the lab MELD-based transplant allocation system, and it indicates the necessity of promptly applying for non-standard exception status to enable transplantation in patients with a severe clinical condition but low lab MELD score. Our case highlights the fact that liver transplantation should be considered early in patients with non-resectable, symptomatic benign liver tumours.

High-performance warm white LED based on thermally stable all inorganic perovskite quantum dots

All inorganic CsPbBr_(3) quantum dots(QDs)are regarded as excellent candidates for next-generation emitters due to their high photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY)and defect ***,the poor stability and degraded luminescent performance may impede their further commercialization because of the separation of conventional ligands from the QDs ***,Zang replaced the regular oleic acid with 2-hexyl-decanoic acid(DA),which possesses higher binding energy on the QDs surfaces,to act as ligands of QDs,exhibiting PLQY of 96%and excellent stabilities against ethanol and *** with DA-modified CsPbBr_(3) QDs achieved improved thermal stability,a color rendering index of 93,a power efficiency of 64.8 lm/W and a properly correlated color temperature value of 3018 K,implying their prominent applications in solid-state lighting and displays.

Interplay of laser power and pore characteristics in selective laser melting of ZK60 magnesium alloys:A study based on in-situ monitoring and image analysis

This study offers significant insights into the multi-physics phenomena of the SLM process and the subsequent porosity characteristics of ZK60 Magnesium(Mg)***-speed in-situ monitoring was employed to visualise process signals in real-time,elucidating the dynamics of melt pools and vapour plumes under varying laser power conditions specifically between 40 W and 60 *** morphological analysis was performed using Scanning-Electron Microscopy(SEM),demonstrating a critical correlation between laser power and pore *** laser power led to increased pore coverage,whereas a denser structure was observed at higher laser *** laser power influence on porosity was further confirmed via Optical Microscopy(OM)conducted on both top and cross-sectional surfaces of the *** increase in laser power resulted in a decrease in pore coverage and pore size,potentially leading to a denser printed part of Mg alloy.X-ray Computed Tomography(XCT)augmented these findings by providing a 3D volumetric representation of the sample internal structure,revealing an inverse relationship between laser power and overall pore *** laser power appeared to favour the formation of interconnected pores,while a reduction in interconnected pores and an increase in isolated pores were observed at higher *** interplay between melt pool size,vapour plume effects,and laser power was found to significantly influence the resulting porosity,indicating a need for effective management of these factors to optimise the SLM process of Mg alloys.

Learning about good nutrition with the 5-color front-of-package label"Nutri-Score":an experimental study

The Nutri-Score is a 5-color front-of-pack nutrition label designed to provide consumers with an easily understandable guideline to the healthiness of food *** impact that the Nutri-Score may have on consumers'choices is unclear since different experimental paradigms have found vastly different effect *** the present study,we have investigated how student participants change a hypothetical personal 1-daydietary plan after a learning phase during which they learn about the Nutri-Scores of the available food *** were instructed to compose a healthy diet plan in order that the question of whether the NutriScore would improve their ability to compose a healthy dietary plan could be investigated,independent of the question of whether they would apply this knowledge in their ordinary *** found a substantial(Cohen's d=0.86)positive impact on nutritional quality(as measured by the Nutrient Profiling System score of the Food Standards Agency)and a medium-sized(Cohen's d=0.43)reduction of energy *** content reduction was larger for participants who had initially composed plans with higher energy *** results suggest that the Nutri-Score has the potential to guide consumers to healthier food *** remains unclear,however,whether this potential will be reflected in real-life dietary choices.

This study adapts the flexible characteristic of meshfree method in analyzing three-dimensional(3D)complex geometry structures,which are the interlocking concrete blocks of step *** elastostatic behavior of the block is analysed by solving the Galerkin weak form formulation over local support *** 3D moving least square(MLS)approximation is applied to build the interpolation functions of *** pre-defined number of nodes in an integration domain ranging from 10 to 60 nodes is also investigated for their effect on the studied *** accuracy and efficiency of the studied method on 3D elastostatic responses are validated through the comparison with the solutions of standard finite element method(FEM)using linear shape functions on tetrahedral elements and the well-known commercial software,*** results show that elastostatic responses of studied concrete block obtained by meshfree method converge faster and are more accurate than those of standard *** studied meshfree method is effective in the analysis of static responses of complex geometry *** amount of discretised nodes within the integration domain used in building MLS shape functions should be in the range from 30 to 60 nodes and should not be less than 20 nodes.

Performance of ground penetrating radar in root detection and its application in root diameter estimation under controlled conditions

A plant is stabilized by its root system. In congested urban cities such as Hong Kong, ground trenching is frequently seen due to the installation of utility lines along the roadside. Soil nailing, which involves soil coring in slopes, is a common solution to improve the slope stability. However, both activities inevitably pose a risk to the integrity of any root sys- tems present, and thus reduce the root anchorage. To prevent or minimize such damage, a careful design of the excava- tion/drilling location is of prime importance. Ground penetrating radar （GPR） provides a non-destructive method for locating roots by examining the contrast between the dielectric properties of the roots and the surrounding soil. To examine the perfor- mance of GPR and promote its use in Hong Kong, a test bed was prepared using local materials to create a controlled envi- ronment in which to conduct a series of systematic tests evaluating the performance of a 900 MHz GPR. The reflected radar- grams were subject to the influence of the following factors： size and depth of roots, horizontal distance between roots, and contrast between the root and soil water content. Correlations between root size and a number of waveform parameters were also explored. Limiting values for root size, root embedded depth, horizontal separation distance between roots, and water content contrast between root and soil were obtained. A significant correlation was found between the root diameter and time travel parameter T2 （p〈0.001, t=0.795）. Because GPR root detection is highly site-specific, this study provides a local refer- ence for GPR performance in the Hong Kong environment. The findings demonstrate that the 900 MHz GPR is applicable in Hong Kong for the detection of main roots.

Synthesis and Luminescent Properties of Planar-tip and Tapered-tip ZnO Nanorod Arrays

Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were synthesized on a-plane sapphire via a metal catalyzed vapor phase transport and condensation process in a two-zone vacuum furnace. Planar-tip and tapered-tip ZnO nanorods were successfully synthesized by utilizing different source materials under the same growth conditions. The growth mechanisms were proposed to be vapor-liquid-solid （VLS） process for planar-tip ZnO nanorods and a combination of VLS and self-catalyzed processes for tapered-tip ZnO nanorods, From cathodoluminescence （CL） measurements, tapered-tip ZnO nanorods have more intense green emission than planar-tip ZnO nanorods, and therefore possess higher oxygen vacancy concentration than planar-tip ZnO nanorods. From CL characteristics, well-aligned planar-tip ZnO nanorods shall serve effectively as laser source, while well-aligned tapered-tip ZnO nanorods are suitable for direction-related optical applications.

Adjusting Sink Location to Reduce End-to-End Delay in Low-Duty-Cycle Wireless Sensor Networks

Low-duty-cycle mechanisms can reduce the energy consumption significantly in wireless sensor networks（WSNs）. Sensors stay dormant most of the time to save their energy and wake up based on their needs. However, such a technique, while prolonging the network lifetime, sets excessive challenges for reducing the end-to-end（E2E） delay within the network. In this paper, the centralized cluster-based location finding（CCLF） algorithm is proposed to reduce the high latency in low-duty-cycle WSNs by finding a suitable position for the sink. The algorithm is mainly composed of three steps： a） the cluster construction, b） the fast look-up table（FLU-table） construction, and c） the sink location decision. The simulation results show that the performance of the CCLF algorithm is significantly similar to that of the optimal algorithm. Moreover, the CCLF algorithm requires less operation time compared with the optimal algorithm.
