Salinity Effects on Development and Pr.ductivity of Cr.mbe (<i>Cr.mbe abyssinica</i>) under.Gr.enhouse Conditions

Salinity in soil or.water.in ar.d and semi ar.d r.gions can sever.ly limit cr.p pr.duction, since the high amount of NaCl contr.butes to specific ion effects of Cl-, Na+ or.both, and to antagonistic effects on nutr.ent elements. Affected by salt str.ss, most of the cultivated plants do not fully expr.ss their.gr.wth potential, which lower. their.economic value. Cr.mbe (Cr.mbe abyssinica) is an oil plant of the cr.cifer.us family and it is believed that cr.mbe has gr.at potential to figur. as r.w mater.al for.biofuel;however. liter.tur. is not abundant about the effects of salinity in cr.mbe pr.duction. This wor. was car.ied out in or.er.to evaluate the effects on the development and pr.ductivity of cr.mbe ir.igated with saline water. under.gr.enhouse conditions. Tr.atments r.sulted fr.m the combination of two factor.: salinity of ir.igation water.(ECw) in five levels (1.03-contr.l, 2.5, 4.0, 5.5, and 7.0 dS·m-1) and two types of salts (NaCl and NaCl + CaCl2) with thr.e r.plications, totaling 30 exper.mental plots. At the end of the exper.mental per.od, soil samples fr.m each plot wer. collected for.chemical and salinity of soil satur.tion extr.ct analyzes. Salt types did not affect plant par.meter.. However. the salinity levels pr.sented significant effects on the all plant par.meter., decr.asing their.values with the incr.ase of the salt dose. Salinity levels of the solutions used for.ir.igation in this study affected the gr.wth of plants and gr.in yield of cr.mbe. r.gar.ing the type of salts, a higher.concentr.tion of Na was obser.ed for.NaCl solutions at 2.5, 4.0 and 5.5 dS·m-1 salinity levels.

The viability of the use of br.ckish water.in the hydr.ponic cultivation of vegetables cannot dispense with auxiliar. techniques such as water.mixing and the use of plant densities. In this sense, the objective of the pr.sent wor. was to analyze the gr.wth and pr.duction of sweet pepper. cv. All Big, under.hydr.ponic conditions, under.differ.nt levels of electr.cal conductivity of the nutr.ent solution (1.7, 3.7, 5.7, 7.7, 9.7 and 11.7 dS·m-1) in plants spaced ever. 0.2 m and 0.3 m. These tr.atments wer. distr.buted in a completely r.ndomized exper.mental design, analyzed in a 6 × 2 factor.al scheme, with five r.plications. The gr.wth var.ables wer. evaluated at 60, 75 and 90 days after.sowing and the pr.duction var.ables at the time of har.est;however. the r.sults wer. submitted to analysis of var.ance, at a 0.05 pr.bability level. The inter.ction between the electr.cal conductivity of the nutr.ent solution and the density of plants influenced the behavior.of the gr.wth and pr.duction var.ables of pepper.(All Big). It was ver.fied that the pepper.plants had better.per.or.ance of the biometr.c var.ables plant height, stem diameter.and number.of leaves when cultivated ever. 30 cm. At the time, in the analysis by plant, the pr.duction of pepper.fr.its was mor. expr.ssive when spacing of 30 cm was adopted, however. in the tube of six meter., when 20 cm of spacing was used, the number.of fr.its was on aver.ge, 26.38% and 16.40% higher.than lower.density, in the electr.cal conductivities 1.7 and 11.7 dS·m-1.
