Systemic thrombin generation by glucose

Background: Systemic thrombin activity (F2a), i.e. thrombin protected and transported by a2- macroglobulin, is a new biomarker for the activation state of coagulation in vivo. F2a > 120% of normal diagnoses a pathologic disseminated intravascular coagulation (PIC) in humans, either acute or chronic. Since glucose triggers intrinsic coagulation, the present work aimed to quantify systemic thrombin generation induced by glucose in vivo in mice. Material and Methods: Balb/c mice were i.p. injected with different concentrations of glucose (0 - 0.3 mmoles). After 0 - 3 h EDTA-blood was withdrawn, centrifuged, and the plasma was stabilized 1 + 1 with 2.5 M arginine, pH 8.6, and analyzed for systemically circulating F2a (that is F2a.α2M). The F2a.α2M activity in mice without glucose injection was defined as 100% of murine norm. Results: 1 h after i.p. injection 0.1 - 0.3 mmoles glucose resulted in about 1.4 fold increase of plasmatic glucose and in about 2.5 fold increase of systemic F2a activity. At the 45 min time interval between i.p. injection of 0.038 mmoles glucose and blood withdrawing an approximately 1.5fold increase of plasma glucose caused a 4fold increase in systemic F2a. Discussion: When systemic F2a reaches 120% of the normal, the normal human intravascular coagulation (NIC) turns to the pre-phase of pathologic plasmatic intravascular coagulation (PIC-0 also defined as pre-PIC). At 150% systemic F2a, the PIC-0 changes to PIC-1 which is the common pathologic plasmatic intravascular coagulation (typical PIC). At 200% systemic F2a, PIC-1 changes to PIC-2 (consumption PIC). The present assay technique seems to be suitable in judging the coagulation activation state of any mammalian blood. Diabetic patients should be monitored for the new biomarker systemic F2a similarly as for the old biomarker glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The target systemic F2a range should be NIC, preferably around 100% of normal.

Combined Effects of Cd and Hg on Liver and Kidney Histology and Function in Wistar Rats

The present study was performed in order to discern the effects of combined exposure to cadmium and mercury on liver function and histopathological alterations in male adult Wistar rats. In the present investigation, cadmium (100 mg/l) and mercury (25 mg/l) were administered orally for 10 weeks separately or in combination. The rational for studying cadmium and mercury is that both of these metals are encountered frequently in the same contaminated areas. In liver, the activities of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate amino tranferase (AST) increased significantly in the cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) alone or in combination (Cd + Hg) compared to the control suggesting that both cadmium and mercury cause hepatotoxicity spatially when co-administrated. We noted an increase in serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in Cd and combined Cd + Hg treated groups while it decreased in Hg treated group. There was no statistically significant change in the level of total bilirubilin. Serum urea concentration showed a significant increase in the Cd and Hg groups compared to the control group. However an increase in serum creatinine concentration was noted only in the combined treated rats showing that renal insufficiency is more serious in the co-exposed group. Light microscopic examination indicated severe histological changes in the two organs under Cd and mercury influence. Results of the present investigation clearly showed that mercury has profound effects of hepatic handling of cadmium (synergistic effect) as shown by histological and biochemical results. Moreover, we observed a antagonist effect between these two toxic metals on kidney markers such as urea.

The disadvantages of the long term application of Tilemsi natural phosphate （TNP） on maize （Zea mays L.） production has come out because of its low P availability. Some functional soil microbes, such as phosphate dissolving bacteria, have great potential in improvement of P solubility from TNP and P uptake by plants. The present study aimed to isolate and characterize typical phosphate dissolving bacterial strains （Bacillus subtilis） from Malian soils, and investigate their role in P uptake by maize grown in soils amended with TNP. The experimental design was a split plot with three main plots of fertilizers sources, i.e., natural phosphate, commercial fertilizer and without fertilizer, and with seven sub-plots of six microorganisms plus the control. The field experiment results have shown that the maize inoculated with the phosphate dissolving bacteria was improved in seed germination, plant growth, plant production （increase yield by 42%）, grain and aerial dry biomass （P） content of 34% and 64%, respectively. They have also shown that the locally available TNP can be used by the Malians farmers in maize culture and have comparable production to the one obtained with the costly imported commercial phosphate fertilizer, like the complex cereal. The project has provided information for the combined use of the Mali TNP and phosphate dissolving bacteria Bacillus subtilis subsp, subtilis （T）： DSM 10 in improvement of maize production in the country.

Study of Radionuclides and Radon Exhalation Rate in Soil and Sand Samples from Tiba, Luxor, Governorate

In this study, the natural radionuclides in soil and sand have been measured by using high purity germanium (HPGe) detector. While, radon exhalation rate has been measured by Alpha GUARD. The data analysis is performed to determine 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K activity concentrations in addition to 222Rn exhalation rate. The values of radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex), internal hazard index (Hin), and absorbed dose rate were ranged from 46.46 to 124.16 Bq⋅kg−1, 0.07 to 0.33 Bq⋅kg−1, 0.09 to 0.42 Bq⋅kg−1, and 13.24 to 58.37 nGy⋅h−1 respectively in all samples. The area and mass exhalation rates were increased from 9.16 ±2.83 to 16.18 ±2.83 Bq⋅m−2⋅h−1 and 1.8 ±1.34 to 11.35 ±0.98 Bq⋅kg−1⋅h−1 respectively.

Synthesis of Electroconducting Hydroxy-Sodalite/Graphite Composite: Preparation and Characterization

Electroconductive hydroxy-sodalite/graphite composites were synthesized by alkali-activation of kaolinite in the presence of sodium hydroxide as the alkali activator and graphite as a conductive filler. Thermal, morphological and microstructural properties in addition to direct current (D.C.) conductivity of the prepared composites were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode (FTIR/ATR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive using X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX) and DC conductivity measurements were used to characterize the prepared composites. The effect of the hydroxyl-sodalite-to-graphite and NaOH-to-kaolinite ratios on the electrical conductivity was investigated and evaluated on the generated composite specimens made of Jordanian kaolinite or pure kaolinite. It was demonstrated that increasing the mass ratio of graphite-to-kaolinite in the clay-based composites increased the electrical conductivity of the resultant composites. It was also observed that using 1:1 graphite-to-pure kaolinite mass ratio showed the best electrical conductivity value of 3 × 10-3 s/cm, among the other mass ratios used for pure kaolinite specimens, while using 1:1 mass ratio of graphite-to-Jordanian kaolinite showed a conductivity of 1.6 s/cm.

Nosocomial Klebsiella variicola Infection in Neonatal Intensive Care: A New Emerging Pathogen

Klebsiella variicola is a human pathogen that has been misidentified as K. pneumoniae. This misidentification has led to a lack of understanding of important clinical and biological aspects of this bacterial species. It is responsible for serious and potentially fatal infections, with a prevalence of multi-resistance to routine antibiotics. We present through three clinical observations, the case of three newborns having been hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit and whose evolution was complicated by the occurrence of a nosocomial infection in front of which a blood culture was done on blood agar, with a manual antibiogram on antibiotic disks, isolated the germ Klebsiella variicola. The management of the newborns was initially centered on non-invasive ventilation with a bi-antibiotic therapy based on carbapenem and amikacin for two newborns and switched to colymicin for the third case. Newborn follow-up was based on assessment of general condition, clinical signs of infection, as well as a biological control made of a blood count, a c-reactive protein, a complete ionogram, and a blood culture, every four days or if signs of clinical call. The evolution was favorable for two cases with good clinical and biological improvement, and complicated by death due to alveolar hemorrhage in the third case. Given the high pathogenicity of this germ, and the frequency of misidentification, it is crucial to know the clinical spectrum of Klebsiella variicola infections in neonatal intensive care units, in order to adapt the antibiotic therapy and to mitigate the fulminant evolution of this germ.

The study area is located in a Mediterranean region, so the effects of the climate variations are very important. The authors contribution to this subject is based on the compilation of many results obtained from dissertations and theses that are carried out under their supervision. The main tool used, in addition to other methods, is the water hydrochemistry as it is proved very useful in obtaining good results and helpful in getting objective interpretations regarding the presence and absence of salinity. Several factors are undertaken to show the presence of salts in waters in the plain, the lithology of the geological formations shows that they are composed of alluvium sediments where the permeability is quite high, and this enables hydraulic communication between the fresh water of the aquifer and saline water of the sea. The study of climate shows a decrease of precipitation which favors an important decrease of recharge rate to the aquifer, and hence a decrease of water resource. The strontium which is a good indicator for the origin of salinity shows a variation that indicates a variation in the distribution of the salinity, and therefore diverse origins of salinity all over the studied area. This can infer the presence of marine invasion in the down-stream part of the aquifer, whereas elsewhere salinity is caused by the presence of evaporitic formation, mainly by the argillaceous matrix in the bottom of the lake. in the up-stream part of the aquifer. New Pneumatic System for Tidal Energy Conversion

In this work, a new device for tidal energy conversion is presented. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the energy conversion of tidal energy into electrical one by building a small scale prototype using a pneumatic system representing the energy conversion device. The tidal energy conversion device consists of a concrete in cylindrical shape, a moving base that moves inside the concrete cylindrical body and two single acting pistons connected to a power turbine. The system specifications that mainly affect the amount of energy are the spring stiffness and hose diameter. It was found that there is a possibility to convert the tidal energy into electrical energy using the designed prototype. The maximum amount of electricity generated using the proposed prototype was about 5 Volts.

Efficacy of Trichogramma evanescens and Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki to Control Lesser Date Moth Batrachedra amydraula Merck

Efficacy of the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma evanescens and the bio-pesticide bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki （Btk） in reduction of lesser date moth, Batrachedra amydraula infestations were studied during seasons of 2011 and 2012. The result of 2011 showed that the release of egg parasitoid by rate of 500 and 1,000 parasitoids/palm tree achieved 55.06% and 67.45% reduction in infestation percentage, respectively. Meanwhile high reduction in infestation was achieved by Btk （78.65%） at dose rate of 6 g Btk powder/kg talc powder. The result of 2012 showed that the highest control efficacy （58.78%） was achieved at the first time of the control process, using Btk at dose rate of 6 g/kg talc powder. This result was not different significantly from the release of egg parasitoid by rate of 1,000 parasitoids/palm tree which achieved 53% reduction in infestation percentage. At the second time （after one week from the first application）, the efficacy of Btk at dose rate of 6g/kg talc powder was increased to 78.78%, which differ significantly with the release of egg parasitoid by the same rate of 1,000 parasitoids/palm tree, having 61.79% efficacy. Reapplication of the control method achieved an increase in efficacy of the control agents, such increase was significant for both the release of the parasitoid at rate of 1,000/palm tree and for Btk at a dose of 6 g/kg talc powder.

In this paper, a routing protocol for wireless sensor network, baptized energy based protocol (EBP) is proposed. Wireless sensor network presents many challenges and constraints, and one of the major constraints is the routing problem. Due to the limited energy of sensor nodes, routing in this type of network shall perform efficiently to maximize the network lifetime. One of the proposed algorithms is the directional source aware routing protocol (DSAP) which, after simulation, showed a lot of limitations and drawbacks. The modified directional source aware routing protocol (MDSAP) was proposed by the authors of this paper to address some of the DSAP’s limitations but remains limited to a fixed topology, fixed source and stationary nodes. So EBP is proposed and operated under different scenarios and showed, after its simulation using TinyOS, many advantages in terms of load balancing, free looping, minimizing packet error rate and maximizing network lifetime.
