Towards digital architecture,engineering,and construction(AEC)industry through virtual design and construction(VDC)and digital twin

The architecture,engineering,and construction(AEC)industry is undergoing a substantial change,and the tech-nological advancements are shaping the future of this *** years,numerous tools have been developed based on building information modeling(BIM)and the Internet of Things(IoT)to manage a variety of tasks and activities within different construction and operational phases in the AEC ***,with the advent of novel internet-enabled technologies in providing the ability of real-time connectivity,researchers have started to develop virtual design and construction(VDC)and digital twin approaches to remotely monitor,control,and optimize different work progresses and activities in real-time at any work level in the AEC *** paper presents a reference model to illustrates the main advantages and applications of VDC and digital twin,and to demonstrate their trends and anticipated cost savings in the AEC industry at a global *** technological advancements along with augmented reality(AR)and virtual reality(VR)can offer the unique benefit of real-time monitoring of the current status as well as predicting the future of any physical structure at any level of *** global demand and usage of these technological advancements will lead to great cost savings in the AEC industry which would be US$950 million in design and construction and US$400 million in operation and maintenance phases in the non-residential AEC industry in *** paper also discusses the future challenges of VDC and digital twin in the *** a main line of future research,these technologies can simultaneously be utilized with artificial intelligence to enable human-centered decision making to automate and optimize work *** integrations of VDC,digital twin,artificial intelligence,and human-centered approaches will shape the future of the AEC industry and provide numerous research opportunities in this domain.

Residential and commercial buildings are undergoing a dramatic change,and the Internet of Things(IoT)tech-nologies are shaping the future of these *** have recently utilized IoT in a variety of applica-tions and settings to transfer conventional buildings into smart,efficient,and secure *** functional IoT approaches have been developed,there is still a need for improvement in IoT applications and operations to understand the full potential of this *** improvement can properly be done by bridging the gaps of the current literature to provide a building block for future *** objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of research work on the existing technologies and applications of IoT in residential and commercial *** residential buildings,studies are divided to three major categories of home automa-tion,intelligent energy management systems,and healthcare *** commercial buildings,the current literature is divided to four categories of office buildings,healthcare facilities,educational buildings,and restau-rants and retail *** on the review of each category,the trends,current benefits and risks,and future challenges of the IoT implementation in the built environments are identified and *** particular,in-tegration of various IoT technologies with different capabilities,data storage and processing,and privacy and security risks are identified as the main challenges for IoT *** addition,our results show that the commercial building sector has received more attention compared to the residential building *** providing the directions for future research opportunities,this paper benefits IoT developers and researchers to properly identify their work boundaries and define their contributions.

A Computer Model for Selecting Equipment in Earth-Fill Dam Projects

Selecting right equipment has been playing an important role in the success of construction projects. This paper presents a computer model, ESCMODEL, for equipment selection in Earth-fill dam projects. The proposed model is capable of assisting the users in making decisions to determine the size, number, type and schedule of presence of dozers, loaders, graders, excavators, trucks, sheepsfoot rollers and smooth wheel rollers. ESCMODEL can contribute to resolve this selection process through the application of an optimization technique, based on nonlinear programming. Three actual case studies of earth-fill dam projects are presented in order to illustrate the effectiveness and performance of the model.
