Source Mechanisms of Recent Earthquakes in Southern Saudi Arabia: Detecting of New Seismic Sources

Recently in 2020, in southern Saudi Arabia three felt earthquakes occurred in Asir region, in the Khamis Mushait, Ahad Rafidah, and AL-Shuqiq area, of magnitude 3.45, 3.1, and 3.5, respectively. The most interesting event was the earthquake that occurred in Khamis Mushait area, along a lake formed behind the Tadhah Dam (~7 km), fearing any damage to the dam’s body and the consequent destruction. Moment tensors for each event were computed for determining fault plane solutions, seismic moment, moment magnitude (Mw) and the CLVD ratio. In addition, the frequency contents in the waveforms of each event were identified. The obtained focal mechanisms represent different styles of faulting, normal movement with strike slip and strike slip with reverse. These tectonic movements on faults parallel to the Red Sea refer to the tensional forces due to the Red Sea rift system. These events occurred due to a natural tectonic movement, with considering the Khamis Mushait event as an induced event because of the lake behind the Dam. Many previous seismic hazard assessment studies have been conducted in southern Saudi Arabia without considering these recent seismic sources. Thus, our study provides new information related to detecting of new active seismic sources, which contributes to updating studies of seismic risk assessment in this region. In addition, our study pushes us to establish other additional seismic stations around these new seismic sources. This in turn will play a pivotal role in controlling seismic sources and then reassessing the seismic hazard in southern Saudi Arabia.

Detection of fusion gene in cell-free DNA of a gastric synovial sarcoma

Synovial sarcoma(SS) is genetically characterized by chromosomal translocation, which generates SYT-SSX fusion transcripts. Although SS can occur in any body part, primary gastric SS is substantially rare. Here we describe a detection of the fusion gene sequence of gastric SS in plasma cell-free DNA(cf DNA). A gastric submucosal tumor was detected in the stomach of a 27-year-old woman and diagnosed as SS. Candidate intronic primers were designed to detect the intronic fusion breakpoint and this fusion sequence was confirmed in intron 10 of SYT and intron 5 of SSX2 by genomic polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and direct sequencing. A locked nucleic acid(LNA) probe specificto the fusion sequence was designed for detecting the fusion sequence in plasma and the fusion sequence was detected in preoperative plasma cfD NA, while not detected in postoperative plasma cfD NA. This technique will be useful for monitoring translocation-derived diseases such as SS.

Effects of Ultrasonic Waves during Resin Impregnation on the Mechanical Properties of Unidirectional Composite Materials

Effects of ultrasonic vibrations on mechanical properties of fiber reinforced plastics were investigated during molding resin impregnation process in vacuum assisted resin transfer molding.?The vacuum bag including the preformed each?non-crimp fabrics (carbon and glass fibers)?was placed in a water bath of an ultrasonic wave generator during resin impregnation. The mechanical properties of the laminates were evaluated?through the mechanical strength tests and scanning electron microscope?(SEM) observation. The results revealed that ultrasonic waves improved transverse tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, and compressive strengths of the carbon fiber (CF) laminates and interlaminar shear and compressive strengths of the glass fiber (GF) laminates. It was found from SEM observation that the fracture modes of the CF and GF laminates processed using ultrasonic waves were resin fracture. Accordingly, the adhesion of the fiber/resin interface was improved by oscillating ultrasonic vibration during resin impregnation, leading to an increase of the interface strength.

Organotin Compounds in Sediments of Northern Lakes, Egypt

This pioneered study is aimed to determine the levels and distributions of organotin compounds (OTCs) in sediment samples collected from five Egyptian lakes located in the southern-eastern Mediterranean Sea. The paper has given an account of and the reasons for the widespread distribution of Tributyltin (TBT) in northern lakes. The percentage of TBT ranged from 4% - 100% OTC revealing recent inputs of TBT. The highest average of TBT (2.84 μg/g Sn dry wt) was measured in lake Edku. Dibutyltin (DBT) was observed at most sampled sites. Relatively higher abundance of DBT was observed in sediments of EL-Burullus (0.69 μg/g Sn dry wt). One of most significant findings to emerge from this study is the absence of any strong and significant correlation between TBT and DBT in sediments from five northern lakes. The absence of such correlation might give a clear evidence that both compounds did not come from the same source. The observed OTC levels indicate some highly localized areas of contamination which are severe enough to cause harmful effects on marine flora and fauna. Except for El-Burllus, Triphenyltin (TPhT) was not measured in sediments of most stations. TPhT was the predominant species in El-Burullus, which indicate a source of pollution mostly originated from industrial and agricultural waste water discharge, organic wastes, commercial fertilizers, chemical wastes and pesticides. The percentages of OTC to total tin ranged from 1% to 35%. El-Brullus, Edku and El-Bardaweel exhibited the highest percentages. As a result of lack of enforcement on the control of OTC, the study has thrown up many questions need further detailed environmental assessment of OTC.

The Effect of Curative Concentration on Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Flexible Epoxy Coated Jute Fabric Reinforced Polyamide 6 Composites

Many researchers have shown interest in the reinforcement of commodity thermoplastic with natural fibers. However, the drawback of natural fibers is their low thermal processing temperatures, that border around 200℃. In this investigation, we tried to improve the thermal stability of natural fibers with the use of flexible epoxy surface coating that could facilitate processing with engineering thermoplastics. Jute fabric and Polyamide 6 (PA6) composites were prepared by compression molding. The thermal decomposition characteristics of the jute fabric were evaluated by using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). Mechanical analysis was conducted to evaluate tensile test and three point bending test of composite. It was found that thermal degradation resistance of jute fabric was improved by coating with flexible epoxy resin. Moreover, the flexural modulus improved with increasing curative concentration. The interfacial interaction between the epoxy and PA6 was clearly indicated by the photo micrographs of the polished cross sections of the coated and uncoated jute fabric/PA6 composites.

Enhancement in Thermal Stability of Polyoxymethylene (POM)-Based Biopolymer Blend Materials

In this study, we demonstrate the enhancement in thermal stability of polyoxymethylene (POM)-based biopolymer blend materials. Polyoxymethylene (POM)/Polylactic acid (PLA) blends have been used as alternative biopolymer materials for supporting environmental problems with thermal stability feature. The effects on POM biopolymer blend materials with a controlled PLA amount in their compositions under various injection conditions, were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The POM/PLA biopolymer blend materials showed POM phase acted as a homogeneous nucleating site for increasing PLA crystallization, which improves storage modulus of the blend materials. The decomposition temperatures of POM/PLA biopolymer blends tend to shift around 30˚C - 50˚C lower compared to the decomposition temperatures of PLA. Thus, the decomposition temperature behavior of POM/PLA blends seems to be closer to POM. The suitable ratio in POM70/PLA30 resulted in the high strength of the blend materials. The POM/PLA biopolymer blend material was tested at various injection speeds and good miscibility was obtained at an injection speed of 100 mm/s. This enhancement of thermal stability in POM/PLA blend materials should be useful in the development of high-performance bio-based thermoplastic materials.

The Determination of Interfacial Shear Strength in Short Fiber Reinforced Poly Ethylene Terephthalate by Kelly-Tyson Theory

The interfacial shear strength value measuring by the modified Kelly-Tyson equation method was studied the measurement accuracy. The measuring accuracy by using the modified Kelly-Tyson equation method is compared to the nano-indentation testing method. The results and an influential factor are described. An error in the modified Kelly-Tyson equation is verified to avoid the incorrect measurement when the interfacial shear strength was measured by the modified Kelly-Tyson equation. To study the different interfacial shear strength behavior, short fiber reinforced PET composites were fabricated. In this study, an advance fabricating technique for short fiber reinforced composite as direct fiber feeding process is conducted to fabricate GF/recycled PET for studying the interfacial shear strength. The result indicates that the modified Kelly-Tyson equation method accurately provides the accurate interfacial shear strength value, if it is conducted with the sample without a horizontally aligned fiber. So the high fiber loading content sample should be avoided to get the more accuracy result. The large horizontally aligned fiber area into specimens extremely resulted in the incorrect measurement of the interfacial shear strength value by the modified Kelly-Tyson equation method. The fiber agglomeration factor and the sensitively horizontally aligned fiber area must be considered its influence on the measuring for improving the equation effectiveness.

Is there any correlation between Iiver graft regeneration and recipient's pretransplant skeletal muscle mass?-a study in extended Ieft Iobe graft Iiving-donor Iiver transplantation

Background:The end-stage liver disease causes a metabolic dysfunction whose most prominent clinical feature is the loss of skeletal muscle mass(SMM).In living-donor liver transplantation(LDLT),liver graft regeneration(GR)represents a crucial process to normalize the portal hypertension and to meet the metabolic demand of the *** data are available on the correlation between pre-LDLT low SMM and ***:Retrospective study on a cohort of 106 LDLT patients receiving an extended left liver lobe *** skeletal muscle index(SMI)at L3 level was used for muscle mass measurement,and the recommended cut-off values of the Japanese Society of Hepatology guidelines were used as criteria for defining low *** was evaluated as rate of volume increase at 1 month post-LT[graft regeneration rate(GRR)].Results:The median GRR at 1 month post-LT was 91%(IQR,65-128%)and a significant correlation with graft volume-to-recipient standard liver volume ratio(GV/SLV)(rho-0.467,P<0.001),graft-to-recipient weight ratio(GRWR)(rho-0.414,P<0.001),donor age(rho-0.306,P=0.001),1 month post-LT cholinesterase serum levels(rho 0.397,P=0.002)and pre-LT low muscularity[absent *** GRR 97.5%(73.1-130%)vs.83.5%(45.2-110.9%),P=0.041]was *** in male recipients,but not in women,it was shown a direct correlation with pre-LT SMI(rho 0.352,P=0.020)and inverse correlation with 1 month post-LT SMI variation(rho-0.301,P=0.049).A low GRR was identified as an independent prognostic factor for recipient overall survival(HR 6.045,P<0.001).Conclusions:Additionally to the hemodynamic factors of portal circulation and the quality of the graft,the metabolic status of the recipients has a significant role in the GR process.A pre-LT low SMM is associated with impaired GRR and this negative impact is more evident in male recipients.
