Impact of Left Bundle Branch Block on Left Ventricular Mechanics in Patients with Idiopa.h.c Dilated Cardiomyopa.h.

Objectives: Left bundle branch block (LBBB) is commonly associated with heart failure. We evaluated the prevalence and impact of LBBB on left ventricular mechanics using 2D strain imaging in patients with idiopa.h.c dilated cardiomyopa.h. (IDCM). Methods: We included 101 patients with IDCM with mean age 38 ± 18 years: 74% were males and 13.9% of them were in NYhA Class III-IV. LBBB was present in 26 (37%) of included patients. Myocardial mechanics including longitudinal, circumferential strain and rotation and LV synchronization were assessed using two-dimensional strain imaging. Results: LBBB group had higher LV volumes, and PAP compared with non LBBB. Peak LV longitudinal systolic strain (εsys) of the septum and global LV SRsys were significantly lower in LBBB compared to non LBBB group (P 0.01, 0.03). TTP-d was greater in LBBB in comparison to non LBBB group (274.5 ± 116 versus 209.4 ± 139, P 0.02). The electromechanical delay between septal segments was 35 ± 18 ms and between lateral wall segments: 48 ± 24 ms, between anterior wall segments: 21 ± 11 and between inferior wall segments: 41 ± 12. Consequently, LV mechanical dyssynchrony was more evident in IDCM patients with LBBB. QRS width was correlated inversely with LV longitudinal strain and strain rate and electromechanical delay (P 0.0001) in non LBBB group. In LBBB QRS width was not related to cardiac mechanics. Using univariate analysis and after a multiple covariate adjustment, the baseline LBBB was associated with a significantly increased LV dysfunction. Conclusion:After correcting for potential confounders, LBBB was found to be associated with more deterioration of LV mechanics and exaggerated LV dyssynchrony in patients with IDCM.

Association of hyperhomocysteinaemia with hyperglycaemia, Dyslipidaemia, hypertension and Obesity

There is conflicting scientific data about the link between, high homocysteine (hcy) levels in the general population, and obesity. This is a case-control study aimed to assess the role of hyperhomocysteinemia in obesity and its associated illnesses, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia in Gezira state, Sudan. Two hundred and eleven participants were included in the study, 140 were obese (117 females and 23 males) and 71 were normal weight control, the obese median age was 49.49 ± 12.2 years. The control group consisted of 71 individuals with an average age of 45.78 ± 17.67 years. Among those who were already known to be obese, 67 (47.9%) reported having type II diabetes mellitus, 71 (50.7%) reported having hypertension, and 35 (25%) were obese without having either diabetes or hypertension. Three mls of venous blood from ea.h.participant were collected in the morning after a 12 h overnight fasting in Lithium heparin containers then the plasma was separated and stored at -80°C for analysis. Serum hcy and lipid profile were measured using the enzymatic method by Cobas C 411 analyzer. In comparison to obese non-hypertensive, the results showed that obese hypertensive with hcy levels > 15 mol/L had a considerably increased risk (OR 1.12). When hcy levels > 15 mol/L were compared to obese diabetics and obese non-diabetics, insignificant difference was shown (P: 0.345). Males had a.h.gher likelihood of having hyperhomocysteinemia than females did (OR 1.2). homocysteine, cholesterol triglyceride, LDL, and hDL mean values were compared between case and control groups using the independent sample t-test, and the results revealed statistically significant (P: hips between hyperhomocysteinaemia and cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and hDL in the group of obese individuals were not statistically significant (P: 0.574, 0.265, 0.748, and 0.14), respectively. Preparation and Properties of a New Carbon Paste Iron Selective Electrodes and Their Applications

The new ferrous-selective modified carbon paste electrodes (I and II) based on 5,5’-(propane-1,3-diylbis(sulfanediyl))bis(3-benzyl-4h-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine) (electrode I, A-ionophore) and 5,5’-(butane-1,4-diyl-bis(sulfane- diyl))bis(3-benzyl-4h-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine) (electrode II, B-ionophore) as ionophores are described. These electrodes exhibit Nernstian slopes of 30.2 ± 0.5 and 29.1 ± 0.5 mV·decade-1, linear range of 1.0 × 10-7 - 1.0 × 10-2 mol·L-1 Fe(II) ion and detection limit of 1.0 × 10-7 mol·L-1 Fe(II) ion for electrode (I) and electrode (II), respectively. Both electrodes (I and II) have a fast response time of about 15 sand can be used for at least 3 months. The two electrodes revealed a good selectivity for Fe(II) over a wide variety of other metal ions and could be used in the ph range of 1.8 - 3.0 without any divergence in potential. The proposed sensors were successfully applied for the determination of Fe(II) ion in different real samples.

Evaluating the Effect of Algal Extracts against Ultraviolet B-Induced Skin Damage in BALB/c Mice

Ethanol extract of mixed algae--spirogyra and ulothrix was investigated to assess the effect on some biochemical parameters in UVB irradiated mice. The dorsal-thoracic region of mice were shaved and exposed to UVB radiation for 24 h for two consecutive weeks. Five groups of ten mice ea.h.were conducted： non-irradiated control and irradiated control. Mice treated with commercial cream （S.M.） at a dose of 0.1 mg/cm2 and mice treated with ethanol extract of mixed spirogyra and ulothrix at a dose of 0.1 mg/cm2 or 0.2 mg/cm2. Topical application was performed to all treated mice groups once a day for four consecutive weeks. Results showed significant differences between treated and control groups during the whole period of experiment. The clear potentiality of the ethanol extract was detected through body and skin weight, level of total protein, Superoxide Dismutase （SOD） and Catalase （CAT） activities in skin. however, UVB irradiated mice treated with 0.2 mg/cm2 exhibited the most significant effect when compared to control groups. That may be attributed to anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of algal extract.

Extraction Methods of Cyanotoxins Aqueous Media and Sediments

Cyanotoxins are chemical compounds produced by cyanobacterial mats grown in aquatic ecosystems. These may threaten human health and aquatic organisms. Extraction of these toxins is usually associated with many difficulties due to their concentration in aquatic ecosystems. This study is designed to provide suitable and effective extraction procedures that can effectively extract low concentration cyanotoxin from water and bacterial cells. The methodology is based on collecting raw material of cyanobacterial mats from naturally growing sites such as Wadi Gaza along with 16 liters of aquatic surrounding media. The materials were left in the Lab for 24 - 48 h for stabilization of the mats. The floating mats were collected using special funnel and allowed to air drying. The aqueous phase was extracted by liquid/liquid extraction using solvent mixture (hexane + ethylacetate 10% w:w), and by liquid solid extraction using several types of organoclays complexes. The solid phase was extracted by acetone and ultrasonic device. Results showed some difficulties were associated with liquid/liquid extraction whereas effective and easy extraction procedures were obtained by liquid solid extraction using either organoclay complex or activated charcoal. In contrast combination of both solid materials did not show improvement in the extracted cyanotoxin. Thus we recommend the use of organoclays or activated charcoal separately for extracting cyanotoxin. Further improvement of extraction can be tailored by using a specific organoclay complex that has some similarity in the chemical structure between the pre-adsorbed organic cation to the clay mineral and the chemical structure of cyanotoxin.

Comparative Study of the Antioxidant Activity of Two Popular Green Tea Beverages Available in the Local Market of Saudi Arabia

Antioxidants have numerous applications due to their multiple roles in diminishing harmful effects of oxidative stress. The objective of this work was to highlight the importance of green tea by evaluating the antioxidant activity of the most popular green tea brands in Saudi Arabia, Lipton and Rabea. To our knowledge, no studies have so far been done to estimate the antioxidant activity of these brands. To determine the antioxidant activities of these two brands, 10 mg/ml of ea.h.brand was extracted and their total phenolic content (TPC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPh) radical scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, ferric reducing power and ferrous ion chelating effect were measured. The TPC of Lipton tea was 678.7 υg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/10mg, whereas in Rabea tea, the TPC was 647.1 υg GAE/10mg. The presence study indicated that there were no significant differences in total phenolic contents and the percentage inhibition as shown in DPPh and h2O2 assays among Lipton and Rabea green teas. Moreover, it was found that all assays have exhibited high antioxidant activity in both green teas. In conclusion, our study showed evidence for evenness and stability of the antioxidant activity of the two commercial green teas available in the markets of Saudi Arabia. Continued researches are needed to further the current knowledge on the health-promoting effects of this popular beverage using different supplements by different mechanisms.

Phenolic Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Green Tea with and without Lemon

Tea is the most widely consumed beverage throughout the world, after water and is considered as a good antioxidant nutrient against free radical reactions. Lemons are citrus fruits that are very common in many parts of the world and are well known for their health benefits. In this study, different assays were used to evaluate total phenolic content and antioxidant activities of green tea with and without lemon. Our results showed that green tea with lemon has higher phenolic content, stronger reducing power than green tea without lemon;and exhibits a significant inhibition of 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPh) and hydrogen peroxide (h2O2). however, both samples exhibited high ferrous chelating activity with no significant difference among ea.h.other indicating a good antioxidant potential for both. This is a comparative study between green tea and green tea supplemented with lemon. The study contributes to a better understanding about how the addition of supplements like lemon might influence the antioxidant activity of tea.

Background: Complications linked to postpartum & pregnancy are one of the major causes of female death.
