Universal origin of glassy relaxation as recognized by configuration pattern matching

Relaxation processes are crucial for understanding the structural rearrangements of liquids and amorphous materials. However, the overarching principle that governs these processes across vastly different materials remains an open question. Substantial analysis has been carried out based on the motions of individual particles. Here, as an alternative, we propose viewing the global configuration as a single entity. We introduce a global order parameter, namely the inherent structure minimal displacement(IS Dmin), to quantify the variability of configurations by a pattern-matching technique. Through atomic simulations of seven model glass-forming liquids, we unify the influences of temperature, pressure and perturbation time on the relaxation dissipation, via a scaling law between the mechanical damping factor and IS Dmin. Fundamentally,this scaling reflects the curvature of the local potential energy landscape. Our findings uncover a universal origin of glassy relaxation and offer an alternative approach to studying disordered systems.

Focusing on metallic glasses as model systems, we review the features and mechanisms of the β-relaxations,which are intrinsic and universal to supercooled liquids and glasses, and demonstrate their importance in understanding many crucial unresolved issues in glassy physics and materials science, including glass transition phenomena, mechanical properties, shear-banding dynamics and deformation mechanisms,difusion and the breakdown of the Stokes–Einstein relation as well as crystallization and stability of *** illustrate that it is an atractive prospect to incorporate these insights into the design of new glassy materials with extraordinary properties. We also outline important questions regarding the nature ofβ-relaxations and highlight some emerging research directions in this still-evolving ield.

Hierarchically mesoporous titanosilicate Ti-SBA-1 was synthesized with organic mesomorphous complexes of polyelectrolyte（poly（acrylic acid）（PAA）） and cationic surfactant（hexadecyl pyridinium chloride（CPC）） as template, tetraethylsiloxane as silica source and titanium ethoxide as titanium *** adjusting the amount of titanium ethoxide in the synthesis, a series of Ti-SBA-1 particles with different Si/Ti ratio（79–180） were prepared. After incorporation of Ti into the silica framework the wellordered cubic Pm3n mesostructure remained, as well as the morphology, particle size. UV–vis DR spectra of the Ti-SBA-1 materials indicated that incorporated titanium species existed in a highly dispersed state and exhibited tetrahedral and octahedral coordination in the silica framework.

The mealybug Oracella acuta, native to the southeastern US, was accidentally introduced into slash pine plantations in Guangdong Province in China in 1988. A classical biological control program was initiated in 1995, and the parasitoids Allotropa oracellae, Acerophaus coccois, and Zarhopalus debarri were imported from the US. A total of 19 972 parasitized mealybugs were shipped to China from 1996-2004, from which 15 430 wasps emerged, 12 933 of which were the three target species. Efforts to establish a mass-rearing program for the parasitoids in China failed. Five field release sites were established, and 6 020 parasitoids were released. Only 118 individuals of the three imported species were collected during establishment checks, although several wasps were collected 1-2 years after the last parasitoid release. Over 2 000 Anagyrus dactylopii, a cosmopolitan parasitoid, emerged from the parasitized mealybugs collected, a majority from the Taishan area near the site of the original introduction ofO. acuta. To date the imported parasitoids have failed to establish, and natural enemies have not noticeably reduced mealybug populations.

Small-invasive determination of iron content in coating of galvanized steel sheets by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

A new method was presented to determine the iron content in the coating of galvanized steel sheet based on laser-induced breakdown *** zinc-iron coating was characterized with a series of single laser pulses irradiated on the traversing sheet steel,each on a different steel sheet *** influences of laser fluence and elemental depth distribution were studied and *** protect the corrosion performance of the coating and meet requirements for small-invasive measurement,the ablation size of the crater under different laser fluences was *** the optimized experimental parameters,the diameter of ablation craters is about 50μm,and then,the Fe content in the coating was calibrated and analyzed by the linear standard calibration *** calibration result,however,is not *** that the Zn content in the coating was high and relatively constant,curve calibration was then carried out with the intensity ratio(IFe404.58/Izn468.01)instead of the net line intensity of Fe,and then,the determination coefficient of calibration curve increases from 0.7713 to 0.9511,and the root-mean-square error decreases from 0.4832%to 0.1509%.The results prove that the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is an effective way for the analysis of the Fe content in the coating of galvanized steel sheet.

Fragility is one of the central concepts in glass and liquid sciences,as it characterizes the extent of deviation of viscosity from Arrhenius behavior and is linked to a range of glass ***,the intervention of crystallization often prevents the assessment of fragility in poor glass-formers,such as supercooled metallic *** experimental data on their compositional dependence are scarce,let alone fundamentally *** this work,we use fast scanning calorimetry to overcome this obstacle and systematically study the fragility in a ternary La–Ni–Al system,over previously inaccessible composition *** observe fragility dropped in a small range with the Al alloying,indicating an alloying-induced fragility *** use x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,resistance measurements,electronic structure calculations,and DFT-based deep-learning atomic simulations to investigate the cause of this fragility *** results show that the fragility crossover can be fundamentally ascribed to the electronic covalency associated with the unique Al–Al *** findings provide insight into the origin of fragility in metallic liquids from an electronic structure perspective and pave a new way for the design of metallic glasses.

Even in their bulk forms,complex alloys like high-entropy alloys(HEAs)exhibit favorable activity and stability as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).However,the underlying reasons are not yet fully *** a family of Mo-doped CrFeCoNi-based HEAs,we have identified three crucial factors that govern their performance:(i)homogeneous solid solution phase of HEAs helps to maintain high-valence states of metals;(ii)surface reconstruction results in a hybrid material comprising amorphous domains and percolated crystalline structures;(iii)diversity of active intermediate species(M–O,M–OOH,and,notably,the abundance of superoxideμ–OO),which display stronger adsorption capacity on the reconstructed *** results are revealing due to their resemblance to findings in other families of electrocatalysts for OER,as well as their unique features specific to *** line with these factors,a CrFeCoNiMo0.2 bulk integrated electrode displays a low overpotential of 215 mV,rapid kinetics,and long-term stability of over 90 *** HEAs hold great potential for industrial applications.

Recent progress on the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy （LIBS） for metallurgical analysis particularly achieved by Chinese research community is briefly reviewed in this article. The content is mainly focused on the progress in experimental research and calibration methods toward LIBS applications for metallurgical online analysis over the past few years. Different experiment setups such as single-pulse and double-pulses LIBS schematics are introduced. Various calibration methods for different metallic samples are presented. Quantitative results reported in the literature and obtained in the analysis of various samples with different calibration methods are summarized. At the last section of this article, the difficulties of LIBS application for molten metal analysis in a furnace are discussed.
