Mononuclear cells from the cord blood and granulocytecolony stimulating factor-mobilized peripheral blood:is there a potential for treatment of cerebral palsy?

To investigate a possible therapeutic mechanism of cell therapy in the field of cerebral palsy using granulocyte-colony stimulating factor（G-CSF）-mobilized peripheral blood mononuclear cells（m PBMCs）,we compared the expression of inflammatory cytokines and neurotrophic factors in PBMCs and m PBMCs from children with cerebral palsy to those from healthy adult donors and to cord blood mononuclear cells donated from healthy *** significant differences in expression of neurotrophic factors were found between PBMCs and m ***,in cerebral palsy children,the expression of interleukin-6 was significantly increased in m PBMCs as compared to PBMCs,and the expression of interleukin-3 was significantly decreased in m PBMCs as compared to *** healthy adults,the expression levels of both interleukin-1βand interleukin-6 were significantly increased in m PBMCs as compared to *** expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factors in m PBMC from cerebral palsy children was significantly higher than that in the cord blood or m PBMCs from healthy *** expression of G-CSF in m PBMCs from cerebral palsy children was comparable to that in the cord blood but significantly higher than that in m PBMCs from healthy *** expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines（interleukin-1β,interleukin-3,and-6）and higher expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines（interleukin-8 and interleukin-9）were observed from the cord blood and m PBMCs from cerebral palsy children rather than from healthy *** findings indicate that m PBMCs from cerebral palsy and cord blood mononuclear cells from healthy newborns have the potential to become seed cells for treatment of cerebral palsy.

Multiscale Simulation Starting at the Molecular Level for Adsorption Process Development

This article presents a multiscale simulation approach starting at the molecular level for the adsorption process development. A grand canonical Monte Carlo method is used for the prediction of adsorption isotherms of methanol on an activated carbon at the molecular level. The adsorption isotherms obtained in the linear region （or adsorption constant） are exploited as a model parameter required for the adsorption process simulation. The adsorption process model described by a set of partial differential equations （PDEs） is solved by using the conservation element and solution element method, which produces a fast and an accurate numerical solution to PDEs. The simulation results obtained from the adsorption constant estimated at the molecular level are in good agreement with the experimental results of the pulse response. The systematical multiscale simulation approach addressed in this study may be useful to accelerate the adsorption process development by reducing the number of experiments.

Aim:To obtain pathophysiological meanings of lysophosphatidylcholine（LPC）through the investigation of the effects of LPC in Jurkat T ***:Wemeasured ROS generation,[Ca2+]i,and mitochondrial membrane potential（MMP）by fluorescent spectrometry in Jurkat,T ***:We observed that LPCsignificantly increased the reactive oxygen species（ROS）level in human Jurkat *** structurally-related lysolipids and eleven synthetic LPCs with dif-ferent acyl chain lengths,palmitoyl LPC increased ROS to the highest level,α-Tocopherol,an antioxidant,and rottlerin PKCδ inhibitor were inhibitory effects onLPC-induced ROS *** rapidly depolarized MMP and markedly el-evated [Ca2+]iby Ca2+influx across the plasma ***,LPC-inducedROS increase seemed to not be related with LPC-induced depolarization of MMPor [Ca2+]iincrease.G2A family G protein-coupled receptors（GPCR）for lysolipidswere expressed in Jurkat T cells,however,evidence indicated that GPCR was notinvolved in LPC ***:LPC induced several cellular changes inJurkat T cells,including an increase of ROS generation in a PKCδ-dependent andGPCR-independent manner,increase of [Ca2+]ithrough Ca2+influx,and decreaseof ***-induced actions in Jurkat T cells represent novel action modes ofLPC that do not involve GPCR and multiple independent changes of intracellularsignaling molecules.

Astragalus membranaceus(***)is a widely used traditional herb in China and *** polysaccharides(AMP),which make up a major part of the root extract,have been shown to modulate immune modulations,especially activation of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells(BMDCs)and T ***,the immune stimulatory effect of AMP in the mouse in vivo and human peripheral blood DCs(PBDCs)has not been well *** this study,we found that intravenous(i.v.)injection of AMP in C57 BL/6 mice induced remarkable elevations in co-stimulatory and MHC class I and II molecule levels in the splenic DCs and its *** stimulatory effect of DCs by AMP was elevated 6 h after treatment,which rapidly decreased 18 h after ***,AMP promoted intracellular production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in spleen DC subsets,which contributed elevation of serum cytokine ***,the AMP promoted PBDC ***,these results demonstrate that AMP can be used as an immune stimulatory molecules in human and mouse.

Reinforced CNN Forensic Discriminator to Detect Document Forgery by DCGAN

Recently,the technology of digital image forgery based on a generative adversarial network(GAN)has considerably improved to the extent that it is difficult to distinguish it from the original image with the naked eye by compositing and editing a person’s face or a specific part with the original ***,much attention has been paid to digital image forgery as a social ***,document forgery through GANs can completely change the meaning and context in a document,and it is difficult to identify whether the document is forged or not,which is ***,few studies have been conducted on document forgery and new forgery-related attacks have emerged ***,in this study,we propose a novel convolutional neural network(CNN)forensic discriminator that can detect forged text or numeric images by GANs using CNNs,which have been widely used in image classification for many *** strengthen the detection performance of the proposed CNN forensic discriminator,CNN was trained after image preprocessing,including salt and pepper as well asGaussian ***,we performed CNN optimization to make existing CNN more suitable for forged text or numeric image detection,which have mainly focused on the discrimination of forged faces to *** test evaluation results using Hangul texts and numbers showed that the accuracy of forgery discrimination of the proposed method was significantly improved by 20%in Hangul texts and 5%in numbers compared with that of existing state-of-the-art methods,which proved the proposed model performance superiority and verified that it could be a useful tool in reducing crime potential.

Feasibility Study of R134a/R404a Cascade Heat Pump Cycle in Heat Pump Dryers with Electrical Heaters at Low Temperatures

Heat pump cycles have been widely applied to dryers for their high efficiency. However, low–efficiency electrical heaters are often used during early drying stage for frozen foods or winter since a standard heat pump cycle cannot operate at low temperature. This study introduced cascade heat pumps replacing electrical heaters to improve dryer performance at low temperatures. Experiments were performed to examine changes in performance of the cascade heat pump dryers in relation to ambient temperature, low-stage cycle mass flow rate, and high-stage cycle mass flow rate. The results showed a significant improvement in low-temperature dryer performance with the introduction of cascade heat pump cycles.

Comparison of laser iridotomy using short duration532-nm Nd: YAG laser (PASCAL) vs conventional laser in dark irides

AIM: To evaluate the outcome of laser iridotomy using532-nm Nd: YAG laser(PASCAL) with short pulse duration and Nd: YAG laser compared to conventional combined laser ***: Retrospective, nonrandomized, comparative case series. Forty-five eyes of 34 patients underwent laser iridotomy. Twenty-two eyes underwent iridotomy using short duration PASCAL and Nd: YAG laser, and 23 eyes underwent iridotomy using conventional combined laser method. The average settings of PASCAL were60 μm and 700-900 m W with a short duration of 0.01 s to reduce the total applied energy. The conventional laser was 50 μm and 700-900 m W for 0.1s. After photocoagulation with these laser, the Nd: YAG laser was added in each group. Endothelial cell counts of preiridotomy and 2mo after iridotomy were measured and ***: All eyes completed iridotomy *** total energy used in the PASCAL group was 1.85 ±1.17 J. Compared to conventional laser 13.25 ±1.67 J, the energy used was very small due to the short exposure time of PASCAL. Endothelial cell counts were reduced by0.88% in the PASCAL group and 6.72% in the conventional laser group(P =0.044). The change in corneal endothelial cell counts before and after iridotomy was significant in conventional combined laser iridotomy group(P =0.004).CONCLUSION: Combined PASCAL and Nd:YAG laseriridotomy is an effective and safe technique in the dark brown irides of Asians. Furthermore, the short duration of exposure in PASCAL offers the advantages of reducing the total energy used and minimizing the corneal damage.

Effect of nanoclay on properties of porous PVdF membranes

The main requirements for battery separators are high porosity which can serve pathways of lithium ion and space for gel electrolytes to impregnate in a membrane and mechanical strength to allow easy handling for battery assembly. Generally, it appears the trade-off relationship between the porosity and mechanical strength of the membrane. PVdF composite membranes containing nano-size clays were used to improve the mechanical strength of the membrane without affecting the membrane porosity. The composite membranes were prepared by phase inversion method controlling the membrane preparation conditions such as retention time. The resultant membranes show increased mechanical properties with similar membrane porosity around 80 % compared to the pristine PVdF membrane. Incorporation of nonoclay can be considered as an effective method to improve the mechanica! strength in porous membrane supports, especially in a separator.

Diurnal Variation of Tropical Convection during TOGA COARE IOP

Diurnal variation of tropical convection and kinematic and thermodynamic conditions was investigated for different large-scale environments of the convectively active and inactive periods by using satellite observations and surface measurements during the Intensive Observation Period （IOP） of the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere/Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment （TOGA/COARE）. During the convectively active period, the features of nocturnal convection appear in vertical profiles of convergence, vertical velocity, heat source, and moisture sink. The specific humidity increases remarkably in the middle troposphere at dawn. On the other hand, the altitude of maximum convergence and that of the upward motion is lower during the convectively inactive period. The specific humidity peaks in the lower troposphere in the daytime and decreases in the middle troposphere. Spectral analyses of the time series of the infrared （IR） brightness temperature （TBB） and amounts of rainfall suggest multiscale temporal variation with a prominent diurnal cycle over land and oceanic regions such as the Intensive Flux Array （IFA） and the South Pacific Convergence Zone （SPCZ）. Over land, the daily maximum of deep convection associated with cloud top temperature less than 208 K appears at midnight due to the daytime radiative heating and the sea-land breeze. Over the ocean, convection usually tends to occur at dawn for the convectively active period while in the afternoon during the inactive period. Comparing the diurnal variation of convection with large-scale variables, the authors inferred that moisture in the middle troposphere contributes mostly to the development of nocturnal convection over the ocean during the convectively active period.
