Long-term temporal patterns in flight activities of a migrant diurnal butterfly

Recent studies demonstrated that the Painted Lady(Vanessa cardui),a cosmopolitan diurnal butterfly performs long-range migration between subtropical Africa and north-western Europe,covered by individuals belonging to up to six *** we analyze temporal patterns of complete annual migratory activity of the Painted Lady in Hungary,located in its Central European migratory route,almost completely unstudied *** do so,we used field occurrence data collected between 2000 and 2019 and estimated temporal patterns in migratory activity by fitting kernel density functions on the daily mean number of individuals and observation *** temporal distributions of kernel density estimates were analyzed as a function of time and key climatic predictors of the study *** found that(i)the timing of spring arrivals has been advancing;(ii)the relative intensity of the first and last migratory peaks of the Painted Lady significantly increased during the past decades;and(iii)intensity of the last migratory peak is related to the mean temperature of the previous month,inferring that the migration is shifting to earlier dates and their volume of the migration has substantially intensified,evoking mutually nonexclusive,competing *** study indicates the strengthening migration activities of a southerly distributed,long-distance migrant diurnal butterfly,most probably linked to the northward shift of wintering areas induced by warming trends of the southern parts of ***,the complexity of the likely processes leading to changing migratory strategies calls up for further research in both breeding and wintering areas.

Point defect quantum bits in semiconductors have the potential to revolutionize sensing at atomic ***,vacancy-related defects are at the forefront of high spatial resolution and low-dimensional *** the other hand,it is expected that impurity-related defect structures may give rise to new features that could further advance quantum sensing in low ***,we study the symmetric carbon tetramer clusters in hexagonal boron nitride and propose them as spin qubits for *** utilize periodic-DFT and quantum chemistry approaches to reliably and accurately predict the electronic,optical,and spin properties of the studied *** show that the nitrogen-centered symmetric carbon tetramer gives rise to spin state-dependent optical signals with strain-sensitive intersystem crossing ***,the weak hyperfine coupling of the defect to their spin environments results in a reduced electron spin resonance linewidth that can enhance sensitivity.

Highly correlated orbitals coupled with phonons in two-dimension are identified for paramagnetic and optically active boron vacancy in hexagonal boron nitride by first principles methods which are responsible for recently observed optically detected magnetic resonance ***,we report ab initio analysis of the correlated electronic structure of this center by density matrix renormalization group and Kohn-Sham density functional theory *** establishing the nature of the bright and dark states as well as the position of the energy levels,we provide a complete description of the magneto-optical properties and corresponding radiative and non-radiative routes which are responsible for the optical spin polarization and spin dependent luminescence of the *** findings pave the way toward advancing the identification and characterization of room temperature quantum bits in two-dimensional solids.

Peeling off the surface: Pt-decoration of WSe 2 nanoflakes results in exceptional photoelectrochemical HER activity

Photoelectrochemical(PEC)hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)was studied on exfoliated,pristine and Pt-decorated tungsten diselenide(p-WSe_(2))nanoflake samples,using a previously developed microdroplet PEC microscopy *** WSe 2 nanoflakes had well-defined thicknesses as measured by atomic force microscopy,and the Pt nanoparticles(NPs)were deposited by a variable num-ber of atomic layer deposition(ALD)*** exceptionally high photocurrent density of 49.6 mA cm^(−2)(under 220 mW cm^(−2) irradiation)and internal-photon-to-electron-conversion efficiency(∼90%at 550 nm)were demonstrated on these Pt-decorated WSe_(2)(WSe_(2)-Pt)*** Pt NP loading and thickness of WSe_(2) nanoflakes(in the 24–235 nm range)were used to fine-tune their PEC activity for *** found similar charge transfer and surface recombination kinetics of pristine and WSe_(2)-Pt specimens(as assessed by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy),which indicated significant differences in their bulk properties.X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies were performed to identify defect states and quantify the density of states around the valence band of WSe_(2).the elevated temperature of the ALD process and the evolving Pt NP phase conspired to passivate the sub-surface(i.e.,bulk)defects in the WSe_(2) nanoflakes,resulting in their vastly improved PEC performance.

AIM:To examine the prevalence and composition of refractive errors in ***:Nationwide cross-sectional data collected between 2014 and 2019 were analysed from the Comprehensive Health Screening Program of Hungary,which provided spectacle dioptric power and autorefractometry data for 68227 people(35850 women and 32377 men).their age distribution,18-99y,was similar to the national demographic ***:Of the total population,16.50%of the refractive errors exhibited hyperopia,40.05%emmetropia,and 43.45%*** was 3 times more frequent(58.7%)in younger ages(18-35y of age)compared to older age groups(19.4%of those 56-70y of age;Pth ageing(r=0.716;P=0.009).CONCLUSION:Myopia is the most frequent refractive error in *** prevalence of myopia is especially increased,up to 2-3 times,in the younger age *** actions need to be taken to reduce the onset of myopia and its associated consequences.

Systemic risk research is gaining traction across diverse disciplinary research communities, but has as yet not been strongly linked to traditional, well-established risk analysis research. this is due in part to the fact that systemic risk research focuses on the connection of elements within a system, while risk analysis research focuses more on individual risk to single elements. We therefore investigate how current systemic risk research can be related to traditional risk analysis approaches from a conceptual as well as an empirical point of view. Based on Sklar's theorem, which provides a one-to-one relationship between multivariate distributions and copulas, we suggest a reframing of the concept of copulas based on a network perspective. this provides a promising way forward for integrating individual risk(in the form of probability distributions) and systemic risk(in the form of copulasdescribing the dependencies among such distributions)across research domains. Copulas can link continuous node states, characterizing individual risks, with a gradual dependency of the coupling strength between nodes on their states, characterizing systemic risk. When copulas are used for describing such refined coupling between nodes,they can provide a more accurate quantification of a system's network structure. this enables more realistic systemic risk assessments, and is especially useful when extreme events(that occur at low probabilities, but have high impacts) affect a system's nodes. In this way, copulas can be informative in measuring and quantifying changes in systemic risk and therefore be helpful in its management. We discuss the advantages and limitations of copulas for integrative risk analyses from the perspectives of modeling, measurement, and management.

Redistribution of Soil Organic Carbon Triggered by Erosion at Field Scale Under Subhumid Climate,Hungary

Soil organic carbon(SOC) has primary importance in terms of soil physics, soil fertility and even of climate change control. One hundred soil samples were taken from an intensively cultivated Cambisol to quantify SOC redistribution triggered by soil erosion under a subhumid climate, by the simultaneous application of diffuse reflectance(240–1 900 nm) and traditional physico-chemical *** representative sample points were collected from the solum along the slopes at the depth of 20–300 cm with a mean SOC content of 12 g kg^(-1). Hierarchical cluster analyses were performed based on the determined SOC results. the spatial pattern of the groups created were similar, and even though the classifications were not the same, diffuse reflectance had proven to be a suitable method for soil/sediment classification even within a given arable field. Both organic and inorganic carbon distributions were found to be a proper tool for estimations of past soil erosion processes. the SOC enrichment was found on two sedimentary spots with different geomorphological positions. Soil organic matter composition also differed between the two spots due to selective deposition of the delivered organic matter. the components with low-molecular-weight reached the bottom of the slope where they could leach into the profile, while the more polymerised organic matter compositions were delivered and deposited even before on a higher segment of the slope in an aggregated form. this spatial difference appeared below the uppermost tilled soil layer as well, referring the lower efficiency of conventional ploughing tillage in soil spatial homogenisation.

Shear bands in metallic materials have been reported to be catastrophic because they normally lead to non-uniform plastic deformation. Ductility of laminated metallic composites deteriorates with increasing processing strain, particularly for those having hexagonal-close-packed(hcp) constituents due to inadequate slip systems and consequently prominent shear banding. Here, we propose a design strategy that counterintuitively tolerates the bands with localized strains, i.e. the shear banded laminar(SBL) structure, which promotes dislocation activation in hcp metals and renders unprecedented strengthductility combination in hcp-metal-based composites fabricated by accumulative roll bonding(ARB). the SBL structure is characterized with one soft hcp metal constrained by adjacent hard metal in which dislocations have been accumulated near the bimetal interfaces. High-energy X-ray diffraction astonishingly reveals that more than 90% of dislocations are non-basal in Ti layers of the SBL Ti/Nb composite processed by eight ARB cycles. Moreover, dislocations occupy a high fraction of ~30%, promoting further cross slip. the unique stress field tailored by both shear banding and heterophase interface-mediated deformation accommodation triggers important slip. this SBL design is of significance for developing hcp-based laminates and other heterostructured materials with high performances.

In this paper,we address the problem that standard stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert(sLLG)simulations typically produce results that show unphysical mesh-size *** root cause of this problem is that the effects of spin-wave fluctuations are ignored in *** propose to represent the effect of these fluctuations by a full-spin-wave-scaled stochastic LLG,or FUSSS LLG *** FUSSS LLG,the intrinsic parameters of the sLLG simulations are first scaled by scaling factors that integrate out the spin-wave fluctuations up to the mesh size,and the sLLG simulation is then performed with these scaled *** developed FUSSS LLG by studying the Ferromagnetic Resonance(FMR)in Nd_(2)Fe_(14)B *** nominal scaling greatly reduced the mesh size dependence relative to *** then performed three tests and validations of our FUSSS LLG with this modified scaling.(1)We studied the same FMR but with magnetostatic fields included.(2)We simulated the total magnetization of the Nd_(2)Fe_(14)B cube.(3)We studied the effective,temperature-and sweeping rate-dependent coercive field of the *** all three cases,we found that FUSSS LLG delivered essentially mesh-size-independent results,which tracked the theoretical expectations better than unscaled *** by these successful validations,we propose that FUSSS LLG provides marked,qualitative progress towards accurate,high precision modeling of micromagnetics in hard,permanent magnets.
