Matrix metalloproteinase-9 contributes to parenchymal hemorrhage and necrosis in the remnant liver after extended hepatectomy in mice

AIM： To investigate the effect of matrix metallopro- teinase-9 （MMP-9） on the remnant liver after massivehepatectomy in the mouse.METhODS： Age-matched, c57BL/6 wild-type （WT）, MMP-9（-/-）, and tissue inhibitors of metalloprotein- ases （TIMP）-1（-/-） mice were used. The mice received 80%-partial hepatectomy （Ph）. Samples were obtained at 6 h after 80%-Ph, and we used histology, immuno- histochemical staining, western blotting analysis and zymography to investigate the effect of Ph on MMP-9. The role of MMP-9 after Ph was investigated using a monoclonal antibody and MMP inhibitor.RESULTS： We examined the remnant liver 6 h after 80%-Ph and found that MMP-9 deficiency attenuated the formation of hemorrhage and necrosis. There were significantly fewer and smaller hemorrhagic and ne- crotic lesions in MMP-9（-/-） remnant livers compared with WT and TIMP-1（-/-） livers （P 〈 0.01）, with no dif- ference between WT and TIMP-1（-/-） mice. Serum ala- nine aminotransaminase levels were significantly lower in MMP-9（-/-） mice compared with those in TIMP-I（-/-） mice （WT： 476± 83 IU/L, MMP-9（-/-）： 392 ± 30 IU/L, TIMP-I（-/-）： 673 ± 73 IU/L, P 〈 0.01）. Western blot- ting and gelatin zymography demonstrated a lack of MMP-9 expression and activity in MMP-9（-/-） mice, which was in contrast to WT and TIMP-1（-/-） mice. No c.a.ge in MMP-2 expression was observed in any of the study groups. Similar to MMP-9（-/-） mice, when WT mice were treated with MMP-9 monoclonal antibody or the synthetic inhibitor gM6001, hemorrhagic and necrotic lesions were significantly smaller and fewer than in control mice （P 〈 0.05）. These results suggest that MMP-9 plays an important role in the development of parenchymal hemorrhage and necrosis in the small remnant liver.cONcLUSION： Successful MMP-9 inhibition attenuates the formation of hemorrhage and necrosis and mightbe a potential therapy to ameliorate liver injury after massive hepatectomy.

＜正＞Film polishing is one of the important measures of precision and ultra-precision manufacture. A kind of elastic polishing film, which has the function of acid-resisting, alkali-resisting and hydrolysis-resistance, is used to polish boride-silicon glass. Through analyzing the surface shape of the polishing film and the movement track of grit, the relationship model is established between the grain size of polishing film and polishing roughness. The roughness computed by the simulation program is basically close to the experiment result data. The model is important to further study the polishing mechanism of polishing film and to select reasonable polishing film according to the machining precision.

Sugarcane bagasse amendment mitigates nutrient leaching from a mineral soil under tropical conditions

Large quantities of organic by-products are generated by the sugarcane industry during sugar extraction *** by-products may be used as soil amendments to improve soil quality,as nutrient leaching is common in mineral soils of Florida in USA due to their sandy texture and frequent rain events.A soil column study was designed to evaluate the effects of bagasse application at 85 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse,170 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse,and 170 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse+nitrogen(N)on the leaching potential of carbon(c),N,phosphorus(P),and potassium(K).Bagasse was incorporated within the topsoil(0-15 cm)in outdoor soil columns exposed to natural conditions,with periodical irrigation during the *** approximately 57 weeks,the distributions of c,N,P,and K were evaluated at three soil depths(i.e.,0-15,15-30,and 30-53 cm)within the soil *** organic c(TOc),N,and P in leachates decreased significantly from the soils amended with bagasse compared with the control with no bagasse and no *** on K content c.a.ges in the columns,bagasse could also be utilized as a potential source of K for ***,application of bagasse as a soil amendment might be an effective way to sustainably reutilize organic by-products while reducing concerns regarding major nutrients entering groundwater *** results of this study could assist in developing nutrient management plans of using sugarcane bagasse as a potential soil amendment in mineral soils.

cAN catalyzed one-pot synthesis and docking study of some novel substituted imidazole coupled 1,2,4-triazole-5-carboxylic acids as antifungal agents

The present work describes a facile,one-pot three component synthesis of a series of 3-[（4,5-diphenyl-2-substituted aryl/heteryl）-1h-imidazol-1-yl]-1h-1,2,4-triazole-5-carboxylic acid derivatives M（1-15）.Benzil,aromatic aldehydes and 3-amino-l,2,4-triazole-5-carboxylic acid was refluxed in ethanol using cerric ammonium nitrate（cAN） as a catalyst to give the title compounds in good *** compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antifungal and antibacterial *** M1,M9,and M15 were found to be equipotent against candida albicans when compared with *** M2.M5,and M14 showed higher activity against Streptococcus *** coli and Streptococcus pyogenes,respectively,compared with *** study of the newly synthesized compounds was performed,and the results showed good binding mode in the active sites of c albicans enzyme cytochrome P450 lanosterol 14α-*** results of in vitro antifungal activity and docking study showed that synthesized compounds had potential antifungal activity and can be further optimized and developed as a lead compound.

Background/aim: Sub-Tenon’s block (STB) or topical anaesthesia alone (TOP) are popular techniques employed during cataract surgery. TOP is often preferred b y healthcare providers because of financial or staffing reasons, despite existing evidence that pain during surgery is better controlled with STB. Pain is not the only consideration that determines patient preference for the anaesthesia tec hnique. The authors decided to investigate the issue of patient satisfaction usi ng the recently developed Iowa Satisfaction with Anesthesia Scale (ISAS). Method : In a randomised controlled pilot trial, 28 patients were enrolled to receive e ither STB with 3 ml of 2%lidocaine and hyaluronidase, or TOP with proxymetacain e 0.5%and amethocaine 1%(Tetracaine) eye drops. Postoperatively patients rated their satisfaction with anaesthesia care by filling in the self administered wr itten questionnaire, the ISAS. Results: One patient in the TOP group dropped out of the study because of intolerable pain. Analysis of the questionnaire results with a two sample Wilcoxon rank sum test showed a significant difference in pat ient satisfaction (phe median satisfaction score was higher in the S TB group 2.77 (interquartile range IQR 2.45 to 3), than in the TOP group 2.04 (I QR 1.54 to 2.5). conclusion: In the setting of day case cataract surgery, patien ts report significantly higher satisfaction scores with STB than with TOP alone.

Sustainable intensification(SI)is a concept for increasing agricultural production under sustainable conditions to meet the needs of the growing population of the *** achieve this goal,the intrinsic potential of soils for SI has to be *** report aims at identifying indicators for arable soils in germany,which have the best natural resilience and performance and therefore can be used for *** intrinsic land and soil characteristics(organic c content,clayþsilt,ph,cEc,soil depth and slope)were selected as indictors for defining the resilience and performance of *** data from arable sites from LUcAS topsoil survey 2009 were used and attributed to arable land,applying the Arc geographical Information System(ArcgIS).The results of this investigation reveal that 39%of the actual analyzed arable land can be recommended for SI in germany.A comparison with the Muencheberg Soil Quality Rating shows that most of this land reflects the highest potential for agricultural *** 61%of the analyzed agricultural land is not suitable for intensification,about 1.5%should be reduced in intensity with a possible conversion to avoid environmental *** most frequent limitation factor for SI is a too low cation exc.a.ge capacity in german soils.

Background and Study Aims: It is difficult to achieve complete endoscopic resection of rectal carcinoid tumors without any procedure-related complications. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of endoscopic submucosal resection with double ligation (ESMR-DL) for the treatment of small rectal carcinoid tumors. Patients and Methods: Eleven rectal carcinoid tumors (in 11 patients) were resected by ESMR-DL between November 2001 and April 2004, using a conventional single-channel endoscope with an attached band-ligator device. The lesion was aspirated into the ligator device and an elastic band was placed around the base; a detachable snare was then used to ligate the stalk below the elastic band; and snare resection was performed above the elastic band. The resected specimens were examined with respect to size, histological atypia, depth of invasion, and the histological appearance of the resection margins. Results: All the lesions were excised completely without any complications. There was no tumor invasion beyond the submucosal layer and there was no evidence of atypia in any of the specimens. Tumor diameter varied from 2.0 mm to 10.0 mm (average 6.2 mm). None of the 11 specimens showed histopathological evidence of tumor involvement at the resection margins. There were no immediate or late complications (bleeding or perforation) after ESMR-DL. There was no local recurrence and there were no distant metastases in any patients during the mean follow-up period of 18 months. conclusion: Endoscopic submucosal resection with double ligation is a useful and safe method for the treatment of small rectal carcinoid tumors.
