In contrast to differential equations, P systems are an unconventional model of computation which takes into consideration the discrete character of the quantity of components and the inherent randomness that exists in biological phenomena. The key feature of P systems is their compartmentalised structure which represents the heterogeneity of the structural organisation of the cells, and where one can take into account the role played by membranes in the functioning of the system, for example signalling at the cell surface, selective uptake of substances from the media, diffusion across different compartments, etc. We show here that P systems can be a reliable tool for Systems Biology and could even outperform in some cases the current simulation techniques based on differential equations. We will also use a strategy based on the well known Gillespie algorithm but running on more than one compartment called Multi-compartmental Gillespie Algorithm.

Objectives： Chunghyuldan （ChD）, a combinatorial drug that has anti-hyperlipidemic and anti inflammatory activities, has been shown to reduce infarct volume in a focal ischemia-reperfusion rat model. To explore the molecular basis of ChD＇s neuroprotective effect, we examined whether ChD shows a cell-protective activity and has a regulatory effect on Bax and/or B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 （Bcl-2） expression in mouse neuroblastoma 2a （N2a） cells subjected to hypoxia-reoxygenation （h/R）. Methods： In order to evaluate the effects of ChD on the cytotoxicity induced from hypoxia or h/R condition, lactate dehydrogenase （LDh） assay was performed. To explore whether the suppression of neural damage when pre-treated with ChD is associated with its anti-apoptotic effect, the ChD effect on the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was analyzed by Western blotting analysis. Results： Cytotoxicity of N2a cell line was slightly increased in 42 h hypoxia condition and dramatically increased under the h/R condition. ChD treatment markedly decreased the cytotoxicity in both conditions （P〈0.01, P〈0.05）. h/R markedly increased the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, Bax, but slightly increased the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein, Bcl-2, compared with the normoxia or hypoxia group. ChD significantly decreased Bax expression （P〈0.01） and slightly decreased Bcl-2 expression （P〉0.05）, resulted in a reduction of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in N2a cells subjected to h/R. Conclusion： ChD has neuroprotective effect in N2a cells subjected to h/R, which might be derived at least in part from its ability to decrease the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, Bax.

OBJECTIVE: To show whether Danggui Sini plus Wuzhuyu Shengjiang Tang(DSWST) has any transient effect on erythrocyte deformability in normal ***: A total of 25 subjects [mean age(27.8± 1.8) years] was enrolled in this study. The study was designed as a cross-over trial in which the subjects took part for 2 d. On the first day, blood samples were collected at baseline and 1-2 h after administration of water, whereas, on the second day, instead of water, the subjects were administered DSWST after the baseline blood sampling. The blood samples collected at baseline and after the administration water or DSWST, were examined for erythrocyte ***: The elongation index increased significantly after 2 h(P = 0.009) compared to the baseline after DSWST intake. however, after water intake, there was no significant differenceobserved. When comparing the percent change of erythrocyte deformability between DSWST and water, we found that after 2 h of administration,DSWST improved erythrocyte deformability significantly compared to water(P has a transient effect on erythrocyte deformability in normal subjects.

Objectives： TO evaluate the effect of Uhwang Chungsim Won [UC, Niuhuang Qingxin Pill （牛黄清心丸] on the blood oxygen level-dependent （BOLD） functional magnetic resonance imaging （fMRI） signal response to a motor stimulation task using a hand grasping paradigm. Methods： Ten healthy right-handed male volunteers were recruited. Their BOLD fMRI signal characteristics during hand grasping were determined before and 1 h after consuming UC. Results： With the administration of UC, BOLD responses to the right hand motor task showed a decrease in both hemispheres including the right cerebellar culmen, right and left medial frontal gyrus, right parahippocampal gyrus, right and left sublobar insula, right and left posterior cingulate, left precuneus, and right precentral gyrus. Decreased BOLD responses to the left hand motor task were shown in the right lingual gyrus, right cerebellar culmen, left superior temporal gyrus, right and left middle frontal gyrus, and right precentral gyrus after UC administration. Increased BOLD responses to the left hand motor task were shown in the left and right posterior cingulate, while there was no increased response to the right hand motor task after UC administration. Conclusions： UC administration significantly decreased fMRI BOLD signal responses to hand grasping in most of the brain areas including the primary motor cortex, but it is not clear whether these decreased responses were caused by a decrease in neuronal activities or by an increase in cerebral blood flow due to the cerebral vasodilatory effects of UC. Further studies using positron emission tomography or single photon emission computed tomography are needed to fully elucidate these findings.

AIM： To determine the precise incidence and clinica features of endoscopic ulcers following gastrectomy. METhODS： A consecutive series of patients who un- derwent endoscopic examination following gastrectomy between 2005 and 2010 was retrospectively analyzed. A total of 78 patients with endoscopic ulcers and 759 without ulcers following gastrectomy were enrolled. We analyzed differences in patient age, sex, size of the le- sions, method of operation, indications for gastric resec- tion, and infection rates of helicobacterpylor/（h. pylor/~ between the nonulcer and ulcer groups. RESULTS： The incidence of endoscopic ulcers after gastrectomy was 9.3% and that of marginal ulcers was 8.6%. Ulcers were more common in patients with Billroth l] anastomosis and pre-existing conditions forpeptic ulcer disease （PUD）. Infection rates of h. pylori- did not differ significantly between the two groups. The patients who underwent operations to treat PUD had lower initial levels of hemoglobin and higher rates of hospital admission. CONCLUSION： h. pylori was not an important factor in ulcerogenesis following gastrectomy. For patients who underwent surgery for PUD, clinical course of mar- ginal ulcers was more severe.

AIM:To deduce strategic guidelines of gastric mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALTOMA) by evaluating the long-term outcome of patients in respect to various treatment modalities. METhODS:A total of 55 patients with MALTOMA from May 1992 to August 2002 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS:Complete remission was obtained in 24 (82.8%) of 29 patients treated with anti helicobacter pylori (hpylori) regimen *** duration to reach complete remission was 12 months (85 percentile,2-33 months).Five patients showed complete remission with radiation therapy (26-86 months).Two of them were hpyloritreatment failure cases. CONCLUSION:hpylorieradication is an effective primary treatment option for low grade MALTOMA and radiation therapy could be considered in patients with no evidence of hpyloriinfection or who do not respond to hpylorieradication therapy 12 months after successful eradication.

The segregation and diffusion of boron during heat treatments were studied. The influence of boron contents, aging time and applied stress on FeMo2B2 formation was also studied. Finally, the effects of boron contents and FeMo2B2 formation on the high temperature strength were studied. Boron atoms were segregated to prior austenite grain boundary during normalizing treatment. And these boron atoms were slowly diffused into the grain interior during tempering and aging at 700 ℃. The FeMo2B2 phase was only formed after 1,000 h aging at 700 ℃ in alloy containing 196 ppm boron. The formation of FeMo2B2 phase is accelerated by the applied stress. It was expected that the formation of FeMo2B2 is closely related to the redistribution of boron atoms. The tensile strengths at 700 ℃ are increased with the increase of boron contents. however, the formation of FeMo2B2 phase results in lower tensile strength.
