Relationship between the Influence of Others’ Opinions on Taste during Co-Eating and the Empathy of Individuals

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the opinions of people eating together affect the taste of the foods they eat. In addition, if the opinions of others influence taste for one of the people eating with them, are the others’ opinions related to the empathy of individuals? Finally, this study was also intended to consider whether the taste threshold changes depending on the opinions of others. Twelve healthy young women (aged 18.4 ± 0.8 years;mean ± SD) participated in the present study. The participants tasted bread under three conditions: 1) quiet condition: a participant ate with three quiet persons, 2) positive condition: a participant ate with three persons who were talking favorably about taste, and 3) negative condition: a participant ate with three persons who were talking negatively about the taste. The electrical taste threshold was tested before and after tasting the bread, and a visual analog scale (VAS) was completed immediately after the tasting. Before the first trial, participants were asked to complete the Interpersonal Reactive Index (IRI). In the positive condition, the taste score increased significantly compared with the negative condition. There was no significant relationship between taste and empathic concern. To our knowledge, taste changed according to the comments of other people who were eating together. however, the change in taste due to the other’s speech was not related to the individual’s empathy. The results of the present study suggest that people experience food as delicious when others eating with them comment about the food being “delicious,” and this tendency did not depend on individuals’ empathy.

Results of aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis in patients aged 80 years and older

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate our clinical experience in a contemporary series of aortic valve replacement (AVR) for aortic stenosis (AS) with or without coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and compare the early and mid-term results between patients aged more than 80 years and those aged less than 80 years. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of 258 consecutive patients with aortic stenosis (AS) who underwent AVR between August 2002 and December 2010 at Juntendo University hospital. Results: Operative mortality was 7.3% in patients aged 80 years and older, compared with 3.6% in younger patients. Thus, operative mortality was higher in the older patients compared with the younger patients, but was not statistically significant between the two groups. Age more than 80 years was not a predictor of operative mortality. Advanced NYhA class (p = 0.03;odds ratio [OR], 9.5) was found to be a multivariate independent predictor of operative mortality. Patients aged 80 years and older were significantly more likely to suffer from respiratory failure after surgery than younger patients, but there were no significant differences in any other complications between the two age groups. Non-home discharge rate was significantly higher in the patients aged 80 years and older (21.9%) than in the younger patients (5.5%). Three-year survival was 84% in patients aged more than 80 years, and 83% of these elderly patients were living at home at the last follow-up. Conclusions: Patients aged 80 years and older have acceptable results of AVR with slightly increased risk of early mortality and morbidity compared with younger patients.

Introduction: We hypothesized to demonstrate whether there are significant differences in blood endotoxin (Et) levels after abdominal aortic surgery between endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) and open abdominal surgery. Methods: The patients who underwent the surgical treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm were divided into two groups according to the procedures: open abdomen surgery (OP) and EVAR (SG). The value of Endotoxin Activity Assay (EAA) was compared between groups. Results: After surgery, Et level was significantly higher in the OP group than in the SG group on postoperative day 3. Neutrophil count was significantly higher in the OP group immediately after treatment, but no significant difference was seen thereafter. There were no differences between the groups in other inflammatory markers. Conclusions: This study indicated that EVAR was less invasive compared to an open abdominal surgery from the standpoint of assessing postoperative endotoxin activity (EA) levels measured by EAA.

Evaluation of a New Formula for Calculating heparin Dose for Cardiopulmonary Bypass Patients

Introduction: Anticoagulation is essential during CPB in cardiac surgery. It is generally performed using heparin;however the widely used formula for its dosing is based solely on body weight. Although the formula assumes activated clotting time (ACT) to be within normal range, baseline ACT varies in each patient. Thus, we developed an original formula, which takes into account baseline ACT in addition to body weight to calculate a more proper dose for initial administration of heparin. In this study, we monitored the ACT to examine if the dose of heparin calculated using our formula can prolong the ACT to the target range, and we determined the factors which interfere with the prolongation of ACT. Methods: Between October 2010 and April 2011, 141 consecutive patients underwent cardiac surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass at our hospital. We measured ACT 3 minutes after the initial administration of heparin and considered ACT values >400 seconds as appropriate for safe initiation of CPB. Results: Using the proposed formula, administered heparin dose was 241 ± 27 IU/kg and target ACT was achieved in 86.4% of patients. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the effect of patient background factors on target ACT achievement. Body weight, age, and preoperative heparin therapy, which showed significant differences, were further analyzed. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that our newly developed formula could be used to properly calculate the optimal initial dose of heparin.

日本输血协会(JSBT)已先后制订了3个辐照血液和血液成分预防输血后移植物抗宿主病(PT—GVhD)指南。第一个指南发表于1992年1月1日,是在认识到免疫活性受者手术后发生PT—GVhD,指南推荐心血管手术、先天性免疫缺陷、新生儿和其他免疫低下患者,以及换血的新生儿输用辐照血液。日本厚生省随后认定辐照血液为公共卫生保险法定的预防措施。1993年,日本红十字会分析了医院PT—GVhD问卷调查结果,发现多数PT—GVhD为心血管或癌症手术输血患者。因此于1995年5月12日发布了第二个指南,推荐癌症手术的输血和采血后72小时内的血液应辐照。

Objective:To retrospectively investigate the treatment outcomes of external beam radiotherapy with androgen deprivation therapy(ADT)in high-risk prostate cancer in three radiotherapy dose ***:Between 1998 and 2013,patients with high-risk prostate cancer underwent threedimensional conformal radiotherapy or intensity-modulated radiotherapy of 66 Gy,72 Gy,or 78 Gy with ***-specific antigen(PSA)relapse was defined using the Phoenix *** relapse-free survival(PRFS)was evaluated in each radiotherapy dose ***,high-risk patients were divided into h-1(patients with multiple high-risk factors)and h-2(patients with a single high-risk factor)as risk ***:Two hundred and eighty-nine patients with a median follow-up period of 77.3 months were analyzed in this *** median duration of ADT was 10.1 ***,Gleason score,T stage,and radiotherapy dose influenced PRFS with statistical significance both in univariate and multivariate *** 4-year PRFS rates in Group-66 Gy,Group-72 Gy and Group-78 Gy were 72.7%,81.6%and 90.3%,*** rates in the h-1 subgroup differed with statistical significance with an increasing radiotherapy dose having a more favorable PRFS,while PRFS rates in h-2 subgroup did not differ with increase in radiotherapy ***:Dose escalation for high-risk prostate cancer in combination with ADT improved *** for patients in the h-1 subgroup was poor,but dose escalation in those patients was beneficial,while dose escalation in the h-2 subgroup was not proven to be effective for improving PRFS.

Eating with Familiar Friends Decreases the Electrical Taste Threshold

Communal eating reportedly induces changes in food-related behaviors such as increased consumption and alleviation of indefinite complaints. here, we examined the influence of intimacy with co-eaters on the palatability of the food and the physiological taste thresholds. The study was a single-blind crossover trial with 16 healthy women aged 18 - 19 years (two close friends × 8) as participants. We examined the effect of four preset conditions with regard to taste (condition 1 = tasting alone;condition 2 = tasting with a friend;condition 3 = tasting with three unfamiliar individuals;condition 4 = tasting with a friend and two unfamiliar individuals). Electrical taste thresholds were measured pre-and post-eating. The subjective evaluation of taste did not show any significant difference between the four conditions (p > 0.05). however, the electrical taste threshold significantly decreased when eating with close friends (p h the meal environment, co-eating with family or friends appears to influence tastiness;however, in the present study, it showed no effect on the perception of taste. Nevertheless, eating with friends significantly decreased the electrical taste threshold and enhanced the perception of taste. Decrease in the electrical taste threshold was observed only when eating with a close friend;it was not observed when eating with other people and showed no association with the total number of individuals co-eating.

全球金融危机爆发后,很多OECD经济体设立了新型货币政策工具。未来的经济环境与危机时期相比有诸多不同,与危机前相比更宽泛的金融稳定概念已成为货币政策重要目标,本文分析了未来哪些货币政策新工具需要保留,并分析了在向常态化经济转型过渡期间可以选择哪些货币政策新工具,以及如果经济陷入长期停滞又该如何选择这些工具。在后复苏时期,央行可以回归到盯住短期市场利率和缩小资产负债表。然而,新的流动性监管要求可能需要货币政策实施有所改变。向常态化经济转型过渡会是一个漫长的过程,需要组合使用各种流动性工具。同时,央行可以采用利率走廊下限体系,维护金融稳定。作为降低政策利率的替代品,非传统货币政策措施必要性降低,除非经济陷入长期停滞。在后复苏时期,仍然可以延续扩大抵押品和交易对方范围,推广央行间货币互换。
