Relationship between metabolic syndrome and erectile dysfunction

Aim: To determine the relationship between metabolic syndrome (mS) and erectile dysfunction (ed) and to see which risk factors correlated the best with ed. methods: Seventy-nine cardiology clinic outpatients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and lipid metabolism disorder were recruited. They were categorized as having mS, hypertension (blood pressure greater than 130/85 mmhg) and dyslipidemia. ed was classified based on International Index of Erectile Function scores. Patients were grouped into quartiles based on body mass index (bmI). Chi-square, Pearson's correlation and regression tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: The mean age of the patients was 56.6 years. ed was diagnosed in 59 (74.7 %) of the 79 patients. In the 38 patients with mS, all had ed. ed was not significantly correlated with cholesterol levels (P > 0.05), but was found often in patients who had both hyperc-holesterolemia and hT (Phe 25 patients who had dyslipidemia had ed. however, ed was not significantly correlated with dyslipidemia (P > 0.05). Tweenty-two of the 23 patients who had bmI greater than 30 had ed, which was significantly more prevalent than that in those who had normal bmI (Ped was seen in 38 of 53 smoker patients. Although ed was more prevalent in cigarette smokers, it was not significantly different from non-smokers (P>0.5). Conclusion: ed is present in a high percentage of patients with mS. Among multiple risk factors for ed, mS correlates the most highly. The next most important risk group is the patients with hypertension +hypercholestrolemia and obesity (bmI > 30).

background:Data on epidemiology, costs, and outcomes of burn-related injuries presenting at emergency departments (eds) are scarce. To obtain such information, a questionnaire study with an adequate response rate is imperative. There is evidence that optimized strategies can increase patient participation. however, it is unclear whether this applies to burn patients in an ed setting. The objective of this feasibility study was to optimize and evaluate patient recruitment strategy and follow-up methods in patients with burn injuries presenting at eds. methods:In a prospective cohort study with a 6-month follow-up, patients with burn-related injuries attending two large eds during a 3-month study period were included. Eligible patients were quasi-randomly allocated to a standard or optimized recruitment strategy by week of the ed visit. The standard recruitment strategy consisted of an invitation letter to participate, an informed consent form, a questionnaire, and a franked return envelope. The optimized recruitment strategy was complemented by a stamped returned envelope, monetary incentive, sending a second copy of the questionnaire, and a reminder by telephone in non-responders. Response rates were calculated, and questionnaires were used to assess treatment, costs, and health-related quality of life. Results:A total of 87 patients were included of which 85 were eligible for the follow-up study. There was a higher response rate at 2 months in the optimized versus the standard recruitment strategy (43.6%vs. 20.0%;OR=3.1 (95%CI 1.1–8.8)), although overall response is low. Non-response analyses showed no significant differences in patient, burn injury or treatment characteristics between responders versus non-responders. Conclusions:This study demonstrated that response rates can be increased with an optimized, but more labor-intensive recruitment strategy, although further optimization of recruitment and follow-up is needed. Serological diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma by enzyme linked immunosorbant assay:optimization,standardization and diagnostic criteria

Objectives To produce an enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) to detect antibodies against Epstein barr virus (EbV) specified nuclear antigen 1 (EbNA 1) and the 18kD EbV matrix protein, and to determine and optimize its sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).methods We used a combination of highly purified glutathione transferase fusion proteins of the 40kD carboxy domain of EbNA1 and the 18kD EbV matrix protein for coating ELISA plates. In three separate studies, we tested for IgA antibodies in serum specimens from 28 EbV seronegative donors, 284 EbV seropositive donors and 160 newly diagnosed NPC patients. by comparing the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis obtained for different cutoff values, we derived several quantitative parameters to evaluate assay performance, establish objective diagnostic criteria which optimize the intrinsic diagnostic capability of the assay and assess the significance of individual test results, respectively. Optimum cutoff optical density (od) is defined as the cutoff od where sensitivity of the assay equals its specificity, and resolution of the assay is indicated by the value of sensitivity (or specificity) determined at the optimum cutoff od. Diagnosis of NPC was achieved by setting a cutoff zone at +/-20% of this *** All the EbV seronegative donors tested were not reactive, and most of the EbV seropositive donors were weakly reactive, while the majority of NPC patients were moderately or strongly reactive. While the assay was thus shown to be specific for EbV, there was an overlap in the level of these serum antibodies between few individuals of the two latter groups. It was shown that the assay performed equally well in two separate studies conducted under different testing conditions and using different collections of sera in that assay resolution determined on these occasions were 86% and 87% respectively. Skeletal stem and progenitor cells(SSPCs) perform bone maintenance and repair. With age, they produce fewer osteoblasts and more adipocytes leading to a loss of skeletal integrity. The molecular mechanisms that underlie this detrimental transformation are largely unknown. Single-cell RNA sequencing revealed that Notch signaling becomes elevated in SSPCs during aging. To examine the role of increased Notch activity, we deleted Nicastrin, an essential Notch pathway component, in SSPCs in vivo. middle-aged conditional knockout mice displayed elevated SSPC osteo-lineage gene expression, increased trabecular bone mass, reduced bone marrow adiposity, and enhanced bone repair. Thus, Notch regulates SSPC cell fate decisions, and moderating Notch signaling ameliorates the skeletal aging phenotype, increasing bone mass even beyond that of young mice. Finally, we identified the transcription factor Ebf3 as a downstream mediator of Notch signaling in SSPCs that is dysregulated with aging, highlighting it as a promising therapeutic target to rejuvenate the aged skeleton.

Confined thin film melt polymerization (CTFmP) of naphthalene chloride/hydroquinone (NCmQ, 1/1, molar)mixtures at polymerization temperatures (T_p) below ca. 300℃ resulted in relatively thick, elongated crystals. Polymerizationof NC/hQ above 300℃ between glass yielded well-formed lamellar crystals ca. 100 A thick. Phase Ⅰ and Ⅱ [001] edpatterns were obtained for all T_p, the relative amount of phase Ⅰ increasing with T_p. Polymerization of naphthalenedicarboxylic acid/hydroquinione diacetate 1/1 mixtures at high T_p also yielded lamellar crystals that "curled up" off of thesubstrate. When the high temperature CTFmP polymerization was conducted between mica, aggregates of lamellae on-edgedeveloped but epitaxial growth did not occur. Epitaxial growth of lamellae between mica could be obtained, however, byconfined thin film solution polymerization, with both of the latter samples yielding apparently related ed patterns from adifferent unit cell than phase Ⅰ or Ⅱ. Fiber patterns, obtained from sheared samples, indicated considerably greater crystaldisorder than in the nascent crystals. Refinement of the phase Ⅰ unit cell parameters, based on the [001] and [01 1] edpatterns, with modeling based on Cerius^2, suggests a monoclinic phase Ⅰ unit cell with a = 7.76, b = 5.71, c = 14.99 A, α = γ= 90°, β= 99.7°, ρ = 1.47 g/cm^3, space group P12_1/al.

We are now preparing for the third generation (e,e' K+) Λ hypernuclear spectroscopic experiment at hall C,Jefferson Lab (USA). The goal of the experiment is the precise spectroscopy of hypernuclei in wide mass region. We have constructed a new high resolution electron spectrometer "hES" dedicated to (e,e' K+) hypernuclear study in Japan and it was shipped to JLab in February,2008. We will discuss about the physics of the (e,e' K+) hypernuclear study at JLab and report the current preparation status of the third generatrion experiment.
