A theoretical study has been made to optimize the fin geometry of a horizontal finned tube which is to be used for condensers that handle the vapor load of a liquid phase change cooling *** numerical calcu- lations of the vapor to coolant heat transfer have been performed for parametric values of fin height,fin spacing, vertical bundle depth and tubeside heat transfer *** dielectric fluids (R-113,FC-72,and FC-87) at atmospheric pressure were selected as the working *** a single tube with optimized fin geometry,the average heat flux increased in the order of FC-87,R-113 and *** the optimum fin height and optimum fin spacing increased with increasing vertical bundle depth.

A process for purifying aqueous solutions containing heavy and toxic metals such as chromium（Cr） has been investigated. One of the extremely harmful pollutants in rivers and seawater is the heavy metal ions due to their direct impacts on human, animals and plants are hexavalent Cr（Ⅵ）. Consequently, highly sensitive sensor to detect Cr is essential. Surface plasmon resonance（SPR） technique has attracted huge research interest in detecting heavy metals specifically. In this study, three types of prism-based SPR sensor, gold（Au）/silver（Ag）, Au/polyaniline（PANI） and Au/titanium dioxide（TiO2） nanostructured films, are investigated as potential sensing material to detect the presence of Cr（Ⅵ） ions in water. The base Au layer with thickness of 48.3 nm is deposited on a glass slide for all sensors. For Au/Ag, Au/PANI nanofibers and Au/TiO2sensor films, the Cr（Ⅵ） concentration is varied from 1 ppm to 15 ppm with sensitivity of 0.270 °ppm-1, 0.082 °ppm-1and 0.039 °ppm-1, respectively. Based on these results, the Au/PANI nanofibers are the most sensitive to Cr（Ⅵ） among the tested sensing materials.

The effects of a harmonically exciting monopole source on an infinitely long cylindrical cavity embedded entirely within a fluid-saturated poroelastic formation of infinite extent are examined theoretically. It is assumed that the source is located outside the cavity at a specified distance from the borehole axis. The magnitudes of the hoop and radial stresses beside the pore pressures exerted on the interface and inside the porous medium surrounding the borehole are calculated and discussed. Biot's poroelastic modeling along with three types of boundary conditions for the cylindrical interface including the ideal fluid, empty borehole, and rigid inclusion with a hard boundary is employed for the analysis. Utilizing a proper translational addition theorem for expressing the incident spherical wave in terms of cylindrical wave expansions, the proposed boundary conditions at the interface are satisfied. Stresses are formulated by means of wave potential functions in a three-dimensional(3D) manner. The effects of the frequency and the radial distance between the source and borehole on the induced stresses are examined for the first cylindrical modes over frequency spectra. Two permeability conditions for the interface and three types of soils for the porous formation are considered throughout the analysis. To give an overall outline of the study, a numerical example is presented. The results clearly indicate that the distance is a key parameter and has considerable effects on the induced stress values. In addition, the interface permeability condition and soil characteristics play an important role in determining the dynamic response of the borehole. Finally,the obtained results are compared with the relevant analyses existing in the literature for some limit cases, and good agreement is achieved.

Careful investigations of live coloration and other characters in the eublepharid gecko Goniurosaurus kuroiwae orientalis from Tonakijima Island, the type locality of the subspecies in the Central Ryukyus, Japan, revealed its slight but consistent external differences from the consubspecific Tokashikijima population, whose phylogenetically divergent status against the former had been strongly suggested in a previous molecular study. A new subspecies, Goniurosaurus kuroiwae sengokui subsp. nov., is thus described for the Tokashikijima population. In life, Goniurosaurus k. sengokui subsp. nov. can be discriminated from G. k. orientalis in showing tint of reddish or pinkish, instead of yellowish, coloration in dorsal body pattern, and also usually darker and more or less reddish, instead of yellowish or grayish, iris in both adults and juveniles. Recalculation of sequence data at hand with relevant Gen Bank data confirmed substantial sequence divergences of G. k. sengokui from all other congeneric taxa of the Ryukyus described so far.

Correlation between the molecular structure and transcis isomerization characteristics of azobenzenes

Photochemical and thermal isomerization of various azobenzenes was systematically investigated to understand the correlation between the molecular structure and trans → cis isomerization characteristics of azobenzenes. A blue shift in π-π absorption band of ortho-alkylated azobenzenes （1o and 2o） was observed together with a reduction in molar extinction coefficient （e） in comparison with both meta-alkylated azobenzenes （4m and 5m） and 7p lacking the meta and ortho substituents. For orthoalkylated azobenzene, photochemical trans-to-cis isomerization and thermal back cis-to-trans isomerization in solution oc- curred slowly when compared with 4m, 5m and 7p. The half-life time of the cis form of 20 was found to be 380 h, which is about 8-50 times longer than those of comparable 4m, 5m （43-13 h） and 7p （7 h）. Furthermore, comparison of the molecular structure and isomerization characteristics of azobenzene thiol （20 and 5m） self-assembled monolayers on flat gold surfaces indicates that the trans-to-cis photoconversion in monolayer systems is influenced by steric hindrance and strong intermoleculax interaction between azobenzene units.
