Low Blood Lead Concentrations and Cognitive Development of Primary School Children from Three Areas in Malaysia

A study on to identify the relationship between blood lead and cognitive development was conducted on primary school children in Malaysia. About 413 children aged 62^/1 - 82^/1 years from urban （236）, rural （80） and industrial areas （97） were studied. Blood lead was analyzed using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer （GFAAS）. Cognitive development was measured by the ＇McCarthy Scales of Children＇s Abilities Test＇（MSCA）. Significant differences found in the mean cognitive scores between the urban （94.40）, industrial （102.90） and suburban children （101.24）（p 〈 0.001）, with the blood lead between the urban （3.66 p.g/dL）, industrial （3.54 μg/dL） and suburban children （3.04μg/dL）（p = 0.022）. Significant inverse correlations between blood lead and cognitive scores found for all groups （p 〈 0.001）, urban （p 〈 0.001） and suburban children （p 〈 0.001）. Low blood lead significantly influenced the cognitive development for all children after adjusting for confounders （p _〈 0.001）. The urban children＇s cognitive scores were significantly influenced by blood lead levels and household income （p 〈 0.001）. however, for the suburban children, the cognitive score were significantly influenced by the blood lead levels, the mothers＇ education, number of siblings, sequence in the family and the household income （p 〈 0.001 ）. Blood lead below 10μg/dL influenced the cognitive development. Urban children had higher blood lead but suburban children with lower blood lead were also vulnerable to the effect of lead on their cognitive development.

Workplace Assessment of Naph.h. Exposure in a Tyre Manufacturing Industry

A qualitative and quantitative workplace assessment was carried out to determine naph.h. exposure in a tyre manufacturing industry. A qualitative chemical health risk assessment was conducted to identify naph.h. hazard at the workplace. Quantitative assessment using Portable VOC Monitor, Automatic Sampling Pump and personal air sampling pump was used to determine VOC concentrations, organic solvents, and individual air naph.h. respectively. The risk rating of naph.h. was estimated to be 5. The mean VOC concentration was in the range of 2.43 to 92.93 ppm. Repair area had the highest VOC concentration while the lowest was in the moulding area. Each work station had significant differences for VOC concentrations （p 〈 0.001）. Laboratory analysis found various solvents including 2-methyl pentane, hexane, methyl cyclopentane, heptane, cyclohexane and toluene which were present in the liquid naph.h.. Only xylene has been detected in the making and moulding areas with a range of 2 to 5 ppm. Meanwhile, the air naph.h. concentrations of the exposed workers were significantly higher than those unexposed. The risk of naph.h. exposure was qualitatively significant and not adequately controlled. Naph.h. was detected in all work stations since it is the main solvent used. The ＂Repair Area＂ was significantly more contaminated than the other area.

【目的】建立不同年龄、不同组织来源的亚洲象成纤维细胞系,并进行冷冻保存和细胞生物学特性研究,为实现濒危动物遗传资源保存和开发利用提供理论依据。【方法】分别采集6岁龄亚洲象耳缘组织(AE00)、新生亚洲象脐带组织(AE01)及死亡16 h后的4岁龄亚洲象耳缘组织(AE02)样品,分别建立成纤维细胞系并进行传代培养和冷冻保存,通过细胞形态学、增殖能力、衰老及凋亡水平分析不同年龄、不同组织来源成纤维细胞的生物学特性,并进行绿色荧光蛋白(GFP)转染筛选和核型检测,分析亚洲象成纤维细胞的遗传稳定性。【结果】成功建立了3头亚洲象成纤维细胞系并进行冷冻保存,复苏后细胞均能保持一定水平的活力,经连续传代培养后,细胞形态均呈梭形;AE02成纤维细胞冻存活力、细胞增殖能力均最佳,细胞凋亡率依次为AE01(16.7%)>AE00(6.4%)>AE02(3.8%),细胞衰老率依次为AE00(35.9%)>AE01(17.2%)>AE02(7.8%);AE02细胞经长达19次传代后,细胞染色体数目稳定,AE00进行GFP转染筛选可获得稳定表达GFP的亚洲象成纤维细胞系。【结论】本研究成功建立了不同年龄、不同组织来源的亚洲象成纤维细胞系,细胞形态均为梭形,不同年龄、不同组织来源的成纤维细胞系增殖能力、细胞衰老及凋亡水平均不同,经连续传代后细胞染色体数目稳定,能实现外源基因的稳定转染和长期筛选,可作为濒危动物遗传资源长期保存和复活个体的重要方法之一。

Food habits of striped hyena(hyaena hyaena) in a semi-arid conservation area of India

Striped hyena（hyaena hyaena） is a near-threatened large carnivore known to occur in arid and semi-arid landscapes in many parts of the world. Its population is declining globally and ecological information is required urgently to meet their conservation needs. We studied the diet pattern of the striped hyena in the semi-arid Gir National Park and Sanctuary（GNPS）, western India. Prey items eaten by the striped hyena were identified from scats. Around 44.4% scats represented single to three mammalian preys while 55.6% of them represented four preys to seven preys. A variety of food items were identified including mammals, birds, insects and vegetable matters. Scats analysis showed that 63.91% diet of striped hyena was contributed by wild prey items, 20.94% by domestic prey and 3.31% by birds, whereas vegetable and insects contributed 9.92% and 1.93%, respectively. Diet diversity of the striped hyena computed by the Shannon-Weiner Index（h） was found to be 2.64. The presence of domestic mammals in the scat remains implied that the striped hyena might frequently visit human habitation in search for food and hence, a potential conflict between human and wildlife might arise. Reducing the dependence of hyena on domestic livestock is a challenge to ensure the survival of striped hyena outside the protected area.

A counterexample of the Euler condition:the Appell-hamel dynamical system on a horizontally moving plate

As a counterexample of the Euler condition for nonholonomic constraint problems [h. C. Shen, Acta Phys. Sin. 54, 2468 （2005）], we investigate the Apell-hamel dynamical system on a horizontally moving plate. The inconsistency of the results with Newton mechanics suggests that the Euler condition is not a universal model for nonlinear nonholonomic systems. This is attributed to the fact that the virtual displacements so obtained are not normal to the constraint forces.

Aging Effects of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Phosphorus Fractionation in a Calcareous Sandy Loam Soil

In most arid and semiarid soils, naturally occurring phosphorus(P) is a major yield-limiting plant nutrient. In this study, to investigate the effects of organic(OP) and inorganic P(IP) sources on P fractionation, a calcareous sandy loam alkaline soil was fertilized with OP and IP fertilizers at low(80 mg P kg^(-1) soil) and high(160 mg P kg^(-1) soil) application rates. Three combinations of OP and IP(i.e., 75% OP + 25% IP, 50% OP + 50% IP, and 25% OP + 75% IP) were applied at low and high application rates,respectively, followed by soil aging for 21 d. Soil samples were collected after 1, 2, 3, 7, and 21 d and subjected to sequential extraction to analyze soluble and exchangeable, Fe-and Al-bound, Ca-bound, and residual P fractions. The soluble and exchangeable P fraction significantly increased up to 24.3%, whereas the Ca-bound fraction decreased up to 40.7% in the soils receiving 75% OP + 25% IP and 50% OP + 50% IP, respectively, compared with the control(receiving no P fertilizer). however, the transformation of P fractions was influenced by aging time. Addition of P sources caused instant changes in different P fractions, which then tended to decline with aging time. Change in soil p h was the limiting factor in controlling P availability. At high application rate, the OP source significantly increased soil P availability compared with the IP source with soil aging. Depending on P fractionation, a proper combination of OP and IP fertilizers, as long-term slow and instant P-releasing sources for plant uptake, respectively, may be a sustainable strategy to meet crop P requirements in the arid and semiarid soils.
