Assessment of predatory ability of native and non-native freshwater gammaridean species： A rapid test with water fleas as prey

Predation rate with relation to species, sex and water temperature was tested among four different gammaridean spe- cies： Dikerogammarus villosus, Gammarus roeselii, Gammarus pulex and Gammarus fossarum. Tests were performed in micro- cosms in climate-controlled rooms at five different temperatures. Daphnia magna, a common water flea, served as prey. On ave- rage D. villosus showed the highest consumption rate of Daphnia magna over the entire temperature range, followed in decreas- ing order by G pulex, G roeselii and G fossarum. The predation rate of all species showed a distinct peak at 20~C. Correction of predation rates for body size gave somewhat different results. D. villosus is then still the most predatory of all gammaridean spe- cies tested followed by G. pulex, G. fossarum and G roeselii. The outcome of the Daphnia tests is consistent with results of other studies with different prey. This supports that the Daphnia test is a good and quick indicator of the predatory abilities in gam- maridean species at varying temperatures, and allows the prediction of how changing temperature regimes influence invasion impacts

Differences in sensitivity of native and exotic fish species to changes in river temperature

This paper describes the effects that temperature changes in the Rhine river distributaries have on native and exotic fish diversity. Site-specific potentially affected fractions （PAFs） of the regional fish species pool were derived using species sensitivity distributions （SSDs） for water temperature. The number of fish species in the river distributaries has changed remarkably over the last century. The number of native rheophilous species declined up until 1980 due to anthropogenic disturbances such as commercial fishing, fiver regulation, migration barriers, habitat deterioration and water pollution. In spite of progress in river re- habilitation, the native rheophilous fish fauna has only partially recovered thus far. The total number of species has strongly in- creased due to the appearance of more exotic species. After the opening of the Rhine-main-Danube waterway in 1992, many fish species originating from the Ponto-Caspian area colonized the Rhine basin. The yearly minimum and maximum river tempera- tures at Lobith have increased by circa 4 ~C over the period 1908-2010. Exotic species show lower PAFs than native species at both ends of the temperature range. The interspecific variation in the temperature tolerance of exotic fish species was found to be large. Using temporal trends in river temperature allowed past predictions of PAFs to demonstrate that the increase in maximum river temperature negatively affected a higher percentage of native fish species than exotic species. Our results support the hy- pothesis that alterations of the river Rhine＇s temperature regime caused by thermal pollution and global wanning limit the full recovery of native fish fauna and facilitate the establishment of exotic species which thereby increases competition between native and exotic species. Thermal refuges are important for the survival of native fish species under extreme summer or winter temperature conditions

The effect of particle size and amount of inoculum on fungal treatment of wheat straw and wood chips

Background： The aim of this study was to optimize the fungal treatment of lignocellulosic biomass by stimulating the colonization. wheat straw and wood chips were treated with Ceriporiopsis subvermispora and Lentinula edodes with various amounts of colonized millet grains（0.5, 1.5 or 3.0 % per g of wet weight of substrate） added to the substrates. Also, wheat straw and wood chips were chopped to either 0.5 or 2 *** of the fungal treatment after 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 wk of incubation was determined by changes in chemical composition, in vitro gas production（IVGP） as a measure for rumen degradability, and ergosterol content as a measure of fungal ***： Incomplete colonization was observed for C. subvermispora treated wheat straw and L. edodes treated wood chips. The different particle sizes and amounts of inoculum tested, had no significant effects on the chemical composition and the IVGP of C. subvermispora treated wood chips. Particle size did influence *** treatment of wheat straw. The L. edodes treatment of 2 cm wheat straw resulted in a more selective delignification and a higher IVGP than the smaller particles. Addition of 1.5 % or 3 % L. edodes inoculum to wheat straw resulted in more selective delignification and a higher IVGP than addition of 0.5 % ***： Particle size and amount of inoculum did not have an effect on C. subvermispora treatment of wood chips. At least 1.5 % L. edodes colonized millet grains should be added to 2 cm wheat straw to result in an increased IVGP and acid detergent lignin（ADL） degradation.

Formation region of emitted α and heavier particles inside radioactive nuclei

we investigate the formation distance(R0)from the center of the radioactive parent nucleus at which the emitted cluster is most probably *** calculations are performed microscopically starting with the solution to the time-independent Schr?dinger wave equation for the cluster-core system,using nuclear potentials based on the Skyrme-SLy4 nucleon-nucleon interactions and folding Coulomb potential,to determine the incident and transmitted wave functions of the *** results show that the emitted cluster is mostly formed in the pre-surface region of the nucleus,under the effect of Pauli blocking from the saturated core *** deeperα-formation distance inside the nucleus allows less preformation probability and indicates a more stable nucleus for a longer ***,theα-particle tends to be formed at a slightly deeper region inside the nuclei,with larger isospin asymmetry,and in the closed shell *** the heavy clusters,we observed that the formation distance of the emitted clusters heavier thanα-particle increased via increasing the isospin asymmetry of the formed cluster rather than by increasing its mass *** partial half-life of a certain cluster-decay mode increased with increase of either the mass number or the isospin asymmetry of the emitted cluster.

Novel typology of accelerated carbonation curing:using dry and pre-soaked biochar to tune carbon capture and mechanical properties of cementitious mortar

One of the challenges of promoting accelerated carbonation curing(ACC)of concrete as a carbon sequestration strategy is ensuring that carbonation will not deteriorate mechanical *** study examined the mechanical strength,water sorptivity and carbonation efficiency of ten types of mortar containing dry or pre-soaked biochar subjected to internal and/or external *** results obtained enabled a typology of ACC to be proposed,in which the carbon dioxide absorption of mortar containing various types of CO_(2)-dosed biochar ranged between 0.022%and 0.068%per unit dosage *** particular,the mortar containing dry biochar dosed with carbon dioxide was the top candidate for concurrently increasing both compressive strength(54.9 mPa)and carbon dioxide absorption(0.055%per unit dosage hour).mortar containing pre-soaked biochar dosed with carbon dioxide was identified as a strategy that achieved the highest carbonation efficiency(0.068%per unit dosage hour),but it also reduced compressive strength(45.1 mPa).Collectively,the proposed typology offers a useful overview of the different ways by which biochar can be used to tune ACC in mortar,according to any technical constraints and/or intended functions of the carbonated concrete components.
