The Ujaragssuit Nunat layered(UNL)unit in the Itsaq Gneiss Complex,west Greenland,has been consid-ered to contain one of the oldest chromitites on Earth based on~ca.4.1 Ga hadean whole rock Pt-Os model ages and ca.3.81 Ga zircon U-Pb age of the surrounding *** study obtained zircon from the chromitite within this unit as well as granitoid sheets that intruded into the UNL ***-situ U-Pb-hf-O isotope measurements were made on the *** from both the chromitite and the intrusive granitoids show concordant U-Pb ages of ca.2.97-2.95 *** contrast,hf and 0 isotopic anal-yses indicate that zircons in the chromitites have a different origin from those in the intrusive *** from granitoids yielded Th/U ratios higher than 0.2,initial hf isotope ratios of 0.2805-0.2807(i.e,initial:hf value of-11 to-5),andδ^(18)O values of mostly 6.0‰-7.0‰,which are typical for felsic igneous rocks in Archean continental *** least altered zircons from a chromitite exhibited initial hf isotope ratios of 0.28078-0.28084(i.e.,initial:hf value of-1.1 to-0.4),close the chondritic value at ca.3.0 Ga and the depleted mantle at ca.3.2 *** zircons also haveδ^(18)O values of 4.2‰6.1‰which correspond to typical mantle *** other chromitite zircons yielded Th/U ratios lower than 0.1,and hf and 0 isotopic compositions ranging between the least altered zircons and the intrusive granitoid *** results indicate that the zircons in the chromitites crystallized before or during the 2.97-2.95 Ga granitoid intrusion and most of the zircons were altered by subsequent ***,the present results suggest that zircons in the chromitites originally had depleted hf iso-topic compositions at ca.3.2-3.0 *** can be explained by two different models of the evolution of the UNL *** is that if the UNL unit was formed at>3.81 Ga as previously thought,with the zircons in the chromitites subsequently being precipitated by ca.3.2-2.95 G

herein, we present a case of gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic gland type(GA-FG) spreading to heterotopic gastric glands(hGG) in the submucosa. A 58-year-old man with epigastric pain was referred to our hospital and underwent an esophagogastroduodenoscopy. A Borrmann type II gastric cancer at the antrum and a 10 mm submucosal tumor-like lesion in the lesser curvature of the upper third of the stomach were detected. histological examination of the biopsy specimens obtained from the submucosal tumorlike lesion suggested a GA-FG. Therefore, endoscopic submucosal dissection was performed as excisional biopsy, and histopathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed a GA-FG and hGG proximal to the GA-FG. Although the GA-FG invaded the submucosal layer slightly, the submucosal lesion of the GA-FG had a poor stromal reaction and was located just above the hGG in the submucosa. Therefore, wefinally diagnosed the lesion as a GA-FG invading the submucosal layer by spreading to hGG.

Systemic gemcitabine combined with intra-arterial low-dose cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: Seven cases

The combination of intra-arterial low-dose cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is effective against advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (hCC). Systemic gemcitabine chemotherapy seems effective in many cancers. We report the results of combination therapy with systemic gemcitabine, intra-arterial low-dose cisplatin and 5-FU (GEMFP). Seven patients with non-resectable advanced hCC were treated with GEMFP. One course of chemotherapy consisted of daily intra-arterial cisplatin (20 mg/body weight/hour on d 1, 10 mg/body weight per 0.5 h on d 2-5 and 8-12), followed by 5-FU (250 mg/body weight per 5 h on d 1-5 and 8-12) via an injection port. Gemcitabine at 1000 mg/m2 was administered intravenously at 0.5 h on d 1 and 8. The objective response was 57%. The response to GEMFP was as follows: complete response (no patients), partial response (four patients), stable disease (three patients), and progressive disease (no patients). The median survival period was 8 mo (range, 5-55). With regard to the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria (NCI-CTC) grade 3 or 4 adverse reactions, seven (100%), seven, six (86%) and one (14%) patients developed leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and anemia, respectively. GEMFP may potentially be effective for non- resectable advanced hCC, but it has severe hematologic toxicity.

Although the nicotinamide nucleotides NAD（h） and NADP（h） are essential for various metabolic reactions that play major roles in maintenance of cellular homeostasis, the significance of NAD biosynthesis is not well under- stood. here, we investigated the dynamics of pollen nicotinamide nucleotides in response to imbibition, a representative germination cue. Metabolic analysis with capillary electrophoresis electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed that excess amount of NAD＊ is accumulated in freshly harvested dry pollen, whereas it dramatically decreased immedi- ately after contact with water, importantly, excess of NAD~ impaired pollen tube growth. Moreover, NAD~ accumulation was retained after pollen was imbibed in the presence of NAD^-consuming reaction inhibitors and pollen germination was greatly retarded. Pollen deficient in the nicotinate/nicotinamide mononucleotide adenyltransferase （NMNAT） gene, encoding a key enzyme in NAD biosynthesis, and a lack of NAD＊ accumulation in the gametophyte, showed precocious pollen tube germination inside the anther Iocule and vigorous tube growth under high-humidity conditions. hence, the accumulation of excess NAD＊ is not essential for pollen germination, but instead participates in regulating the timing of germination onset. These results indicate that NAD＋ accumulation acts to negatively regulate germination and a decrease in NAD＋ plays an important role in metabolic state transition.

Parental care is a common strategy in many animal groups, to increase survival of the off-spring. here, we report parental care in the freshwater crab Sylviocarcinus pictus. A female caught in the Amazon River, Brazil, bore juvenile crabs rather than eggs on her abdomen. Kept in the laboratory, the female retained the juveniles on the abdomen for 17 days, after which the juveniles left the abdomen. A total of 341 juvenile crabs measuring 3.45 ± 0.12 mmwere recorded. This pattern of parental care is very important for the maintenance of local populations of S. pictus, because if the larvae were released, as occurs in many marine species, they would drift downstream.

New model for cardiomyocyte sheet transplantation using a virus-cell fusion technique

AIM: To facilitate close contacts between transplanted cardiomyocytes and host skeletal muscle using cell fusion mediated by hemagglutinating virus of Japan envelope(hVJ-E) and tissue maceration. METhODS: Cardiomyocytes(1.5 × 106) from fetal rats were first cultured. After proliferation, some cells were used for fusion with adult muscle fibers using hVJ-E. Other cells were used to create cardiomyocyte sheets(area: about 3.5 cm2 including 2.1 × 106 cells), which were then treated with Nile blue, separated, and transplanted between the latissimus dorsi and intercostal muscles of adult rats with four combinations of hVJ-E and/or Na Oh maceration: G1: hVJ-E(+), Na Oh(+), Cardiomyocytes(+); G2: hVJ-E(-), NaO h(+), Cardiomyocytes(+); G3: hVJ-E(+),Na Oh(-), Cardiomyocytes(+); G4: hVJ-E(-), Na Oh(-), Cardiomyocytes(-). At 1 and 2 wk after transplantation, the four groups were compared by detection of beating domains, motion images using moving target analysis software, action potentials, gene expression of MLC-2v and Mesp1 by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, hematoxylin-eosin staining, and immunostaining for cardiac troponin and skeletal ***: In vitro cardiomyocytes were fused with skeletal muscle fibers using hVJ-E. Cardiomyocyte sheets remained in the primary transplanted sites for 2 wk. Although beating domains were detected in G1, G2, and G3 rats, G1 rats prevailed in the number, size, motion image amplitudes, and action potential compared with G2 and G3 rats. Close contacts were only found in G1 rats. At 1 wk after transplantation, the cardiomyocyte sheets showed adhesion at various points to the myoblast layer in the latissimus dorsi muscle. At 2 wk after transplantation, close contacts were seen over a broad area. A fully coherent free electron laser(FEL) seeded with a higher-order harmonic(hh) pulse from high-order harmonic generation(hhG) is successfully operated for a sufficiently prolonged time in pilot user experiments by using a timing drift feedback. For hhG-seeded FELs, the seeding laser pulses have to be synchronized with electron bunches. Despite seeded FELs being non-chaotic light sources in principle, external laser-seeded FELs are often unstable in practice because of a timing jitter and a drift between the seeding laser pulses and the accelerated electron bunches. Accordingly,we constructed a relative arrival-timing monitor based on non-invasive electro-optic sampling(EOS). The EOS monitor made uninterrupted shot-to-shot monitoring possible even during the seeded FEL operation. The EOS system was then used for arrival-timing feedback with an adjustability of 100 fs for continual operation of the hhG-seeded FEL. Using the EOS-based beam drift controlling system, the hhG-seeded FEL was operated over half a day with an effective hit rate of 20%–30%. The output pulse energy was 20 μJ at the 61.2 nm wavelength. Towards seeded FELs in the water window region, we investigated our upgrade plan to seed high-power FELs with hh photon energy of 30–100 e V and lase at shorter wavelengths of up to 2 nm through high-gain harmonic generation(hGhG) at the energy-upgraded SPring-8Compact SASE Source(SCSS) accelerator. We studied a benefit as well as the feasibility of the next hhG-seeded FEL machine with single-stage hGhG with tunability of a lasing wavelength.

ObjectiveOctamer transcription factor 1(OCT1),a transcription factor that interacts with androgen receptor,is involved in prostate cancer(PCa)*** OCT1 target gene,Anillin actin-binding protein(ANLN),is highly expressed in castration-resistant PCa tissue;however,it remains unclear whether ANLN expression in hormone-sensitive PCa tissue could be used as a predictive biomarker for poor prognosis of *** aimed to investigate ANLN expression in PCa tissue obtained via radical prostatectomy and its correlation with clinical *** staining for ANLN was performed on 86 PCa specimens,followed by evaluation using immunoreactivity(IR)*** was analyzed by the log-rank test using the Kaplan–Meier method to generate a cancer-specific survival *** correlations between ANLN IR and clinical parameters as well as OCT1 IR were analyzed using the Chi-squared *** median IR score was 0 for ***,given the low median IR score,an IR score of≥3 was defined as *** were 17(19.8%)ANLN-positive cases,and these cases had a significantly poorer *** analysis revealed that the Gleason score,pathological tumor and lymph node stages,and positive ANLN expression were significant predictors of poor ***,patients with both positive ANLN and high OCT1 expression had a significantly decreased overall survival(p=0.001).ConclusionANLN,which is a OCT1 target gene especially in castration-resistant PCa,is expressed in a small number of hormone-sensitive PCa *** positive ANLN expression and high OCT1 expression are significantly correlated with poor prognosis for PCa patients.
