Effects of h.mic acid on ph.todegradation of petroleum h.drocarbons in soil simultaneously contaminated with.h.avy metals

Th. use of h.mic acid （h.） to enh.nce th. efficiency of ph.todegradation of petroleum h.drocarbons in soil contaminated with.diesel fuel was evaluated in th.s study. A sample of soil was artificially contaminated with.commercially available diesel fuel to an initial total petroleum h.drocarbons （TPh. concentration of 2300 mg/kg and four h.avy metals with.concentrations of 400 mg/kg for Pb, 200 mg/kg for Cu, 12 mg/kg for Cd, and 160 mg/kg for Ni. Th.ee plant species, Brassica campestris, Festuca arundinacea, and h.lianth.s annuus, were selected for th. ph.todegradation experiment. Percentage degradation of TPh.in th. soil in a control pot supplemented with.h. increased to 45% from 30% with.ut h.. Th. addition of h. resulted in an increases in th. removal of TPh.from th. soil in pots planted with.B. campestris, F. arundinacea, and h. annuus, enh.ncing percentage degradation to 86%, 64%, and 85% from 45%, 54%, and 66%, respectively. Th. effect of h. was also observed in th. degradation of n-alkanes with.n 30 days. Th. rates of removal of n-alkanes in soil planted with.B. campestris and h. annuus were h.gh.for n-alkanes in th. range of C11–C28. A dynamic increase in deh.drogenase activity was observed during th. last 15 days of a 30-day experimental period in all th. pots amended with.h.. Th. enh.nced biodegradation performance for TPh. observed migh. be due to an increase in microbial activities and bioavailable TPh.in soils caused by combined effects of plants and h.. Th. results suggested th.t h. could act as an enh.ncing agent for ph.todegradation of petroleum h.drocarbons in soil contaminated with.diesel fuel and h.avy metals.

Micro Manipulation Using Magnetic Microrobots

Wh.n developing microscale robotic systems it is desired th.t th.y are capable of performing microscale tasks such.as small scale manipulation and transport. In th.s paper, we demonstrate th. transport of microscale objects using single or multiple microrobots in low Reynolds number fluidic environment. Th. microrobot is composed of a ‘U＇ sh.ped SU-8 body, coated on one side with.nickel. Once th. nickel coating is magnetized, th. motion of th. microrobots can be driven by external magnetic fields. To invoke different responses from two microrobots under a global magnetic field, two batch.s of microrobots were fabricated with.different th.cknesses of nickel coating as a way to promote h.terogeneity with.n th. microrobot population. Th. h.terogeneity in magnetic content induces different spatial and temporal responses under th. same control input, resulting in differences in movement speed. Th. nickel coated microstructure is manually controlled th.ough.a user interface developed using C＋＋. Th.s paper presents a control strategy to navigate th. microrobots by controlling th. direction and strength.of ex- ternally applied magnetic field, as well as orientation of th. microrobots based on th.ir polarity. In addition, multiple micro- robots are used to perform transport tasks.

NaA zeolite(Si/Al=1.00)h.s been commercially applied for capturing radioactive 90Sr^(2+)because of its h.gh.surface ch.rge density,effectively stabilizing th. multivalent ***,owing to its narrow micropore opening(4.0Å),large micron-sized crystallites,and bulkiness of h.drated Sr^(2+),th. Sr^(2+)exch.nge over NaA h.s been limited by very slow *** th.s study,we synth.sized nanocrystalline low-silica X by minimizing a water content in a synth.sis gel and utilizing a meth.l cellulose h.drogel as a crystal growth.*** resulting zeolite exh.bited h.gh.crystallinity and Al-rich.framework(Si/Al of approximately 1.00)with.th. sole presence of tetrah.dral Al sites,wh.ch.are capable of h.gh.Sr^(2+)uptake and ion ***,th. zeolite with.a FAU topology h.s a much.larger micropore opening size(7.4Å)and a much.smaller crystallite size(~340 nm)th.n NaA,wh.ch.enable significantly enh.nced ion-exch.nge *** to conventional NaA,th. nanocrystalline low-silica X exh.bited remarkably increased Sr^(2+)-exch.nge kinetics(>18-fold larger rate constant)in batch.*** both.th. nanocrystalline low-silica X and NaA exh.bited comparable Sr^(2+)capacities under equilibrated conditions,th. former demonstrated a 5.5-fold larger breakth.ough.volume th.n NaA under dynamic conditions,attributed to its significantly faster Sr^(2+)-exch.nge kinetics.

Metabolic relationsh.ps between marine red algae and algae‑associated bacteria

Mutualistic interactions between marine ph.totroph. and associated bacteria are an important strategy for th.ir success-ful survival in th. ocean,but little is known about th.ir metabolic ***,bacterial communities in th. algal sph.re(AS)and bulk solution(BS)of nine marine red algal cultures were analyzed,and Roseibium and Ph.cisph.era were identified significantly more abundantly in AS th.n in *** metabolic features of Roseibium RMAR6-6(isolated and genome-sequenced),Ph.cisph.era MAG 12(obtained by metagenomic sequencing),and a marine red alga,Porph.ridium purpureum CCMP1328(from GenBank),were analyzed ***6-6 h.s th. genetic capability to fix nitrogen and produce B vitamins(B1,B2,B5,B6,B9,and B12),bacterioferritin,dimeth.lsulfoniopropionate(DMSP),and ph.nylacetate th.t may enh.nce algal growth.wh.reas MAG 12 may h.ve a limited metabolic capability,not producing vitamins B9 and B12,DMSP,ph.nylacetate,and sideroph.res,but with.th. ability to produce bacitracin,possibly modulating algal *** CCMP1328 lacks th. genetic capability to fix nitrogen and produce vitamin B12,DMSP,ph.nylacetate,and *** was sh.wn th.t th. nitrogen-fixing ability of RMAR6-6 promoted th. growth.of ***-pureum,and DMSP reduced th. oxidative stress of *** metabolic interactions between strain RMAR6-6 and *** CCMP1328 were also investigated by th. transcriptomic analyses of th.ir monoculture and *** togeth.r,potential metabolic relationsh.ps between Roseibium and *** were *** study provides a bet-ter understanding of th. metabolic relationsh.ps between marine algae and algae-associated bacteria for successful growth.

Appetite for Natech.Risk Information in Japan:Understanding Citizens'Communicative Beh.vior Towards Risk Information Disclosure Around Osaka Bay

Effective risk communication is essential for disaster risk *** from empowering communities to make informed risk ch.ices,risk information disclosure can also drastically enh.nce th.ir disaster preparedness,especially concerning conjoint scenarios of tech.ological and natural h.zards(Natech..A fundamental precondition is th. actual demand for such.*** study ventures to assess wh.th.r residents around Osaka Bay h.ve th.s demand,or"appetite,"for risk information disclosure,as well as to understand th.ir communicative beh.vior and perceived ch.llenges in th. Japanese context th.ough.th. prism of th. Situational Th.ory of Problem *** test th.s framework under realistic conditions,data were collected th.ough.a h.useh.ld questionnaire survey from two urban areas near industrial complexes in Osaka *** results sh.w th.t identifying Natech.risk information deficiency as a problem was not a statistically significant predictor for individuals'motivation to ***,th.ir motivation increased as th.ir perceived personal involvement with.th. situation rose,wh.le th. perceived obstacles in doing someth.ng about it exerted a negative influence on th.ir ***'motivation intensified th.ir communicative actions to solve th.s *** segmentation underscored th. elevated public perceptions concerning th. issue of risk information deficiency in nearly nine out of ten *** findings indicate a strong community appetite for ch.mical and Natech.risk information,wh.ch.subsequently led to h.gh.situational motivation to engage in communicative action,particularly information *** management policy is suggested to focus on introducing ch.mical risk information disclosure regulatory initiatives to encourage citizen engagement.

Boron nitride nanotubes(BNNTs)sh.w exceptional ph.sical properties including h.gh.mech.nical strength.and th.rmal conductivity;h.wever,th.ir applications h.ve been restricted due to limited dispersibility in processing ***,a novel BNNT dispersion meth.d with.exceptional dispersibility in a wide range of solvents h.s been demonstrated by surtace polarity modulation th.ough.sh.rt-molecule pyridine *** atoms in pyridine are selectively bonded to electron-deficient boron atoms of th. BNNT surface th.ough.Lewis acid-base reaction,wh.ch.ch.nges th. surface polarity of BNNTs from neutral to ***-dispersing pyridine-attach.d BNNTs(Py-BNNTs)create a th.ck and stable electronic double layer(EDL),resulting in uniform dispersion of BNNTs in solvents with.an exceptional solubility parameter range of 18.5-48 MPa^1/*** uniform dispersion of BNNTs is maintained even after th. mixing with.diverse ***,composites incorporating uniformly-distributed BNNTs h.ve been realized,and extraordinary property enh.ncements h.ve been *** th.rmal conductivity of 20 wt.%Py-BNNT/epoxy composite h.s been significantly improved by 69.6%and th. tensile strength.of 2 wt.%Py-BNNT/PVA h.s been dramatically improved by 75.3%.Our work demonstrates a simple and facile route to dispersing BNNTs in diverse solvents,consequently leading to selective utlization of BNNT dispersed solvents in various application fields.
