Th. multi-frequency ligh. curves of BL Lacertae d.ring 1997.5 - 1999.5 h.ve been mod.led.by four outbursts, each.h.ving a 3-stage evolution in th. （Sm, vm） plane with.d.stinct rising-plateau-d.caying ph.ses. It is sh.wn th.t th. observed.ligh. curves can be well fitted.for th. eigh. frequencies from 350 Gh. to 4.8 Gh.. Th. main ch.racteristics of th. mod.l-fitting are; （1） th. outbursts are found.to h.ve very flat spectra with.an optically th.n spectral ind.x α （d.fined.as Sv α u^-α） of about 0.15. Th.s is consistent with.th. results previously obtained.by Valtaoja et al. （1992）; （2） it is found.th.t th.re is no spectral flattening between th. rising-plateau ph.se and.th. d.cay ph.se. In oth.r word., th. optically th.n spectral ind.x d.es not ch.nge from th. rising-plateau ph.se to th. d.cay ph.se. Th.se features are in contrast to th. 3-stage sh.cked.in-jet mod.l proposed.by Marsch.r ＆ Gear （1985） for submm- IR-optical flares, in wh.ch.a spectral flattening of △α = 0.5 is pred.cted.wh.n a transition occurs from th. Compton/synch.otron ph.se （or rising-plateau ph.se） to th. ad.abatic ph.se （or d.cay ph.se） with.α≥ 0.5 for th. sh.ck being non-rad.ative. We propose a new mod.l to interpret th. fitting results, suggesting th.t th. 3-stage evolution of th. mm-cm outbursts in BL Lacertae may be related.to th. process of sh.ck formation and.propagation in a h.gh.y collimated.jet （for example, a ＇parabolic＇ jet）. In particular, d.ring th. rising ph.se, th. th.ckness of th. synch.otron-rad.ating region created.by th. sh.ck may rapid.y increase with.time （relative to th. jet wid.h. d.e to th. rapid.injection of relativistic electrons and.a magnetic field. and.th.s lead. to th. observed.beh.vior th.t th. turnover flux d.nsity Sm rapid.y increases wh.le th. turnover frequency um d.creases. Th.s period.c beh.viour is interpreted.in terms of a rotating d.uble-jet mod.l in wh.ch.th. two jets are created.from th. black h.les of a binary system and.rotating with.th. period.of th. orbital motion. Th. period.c variations in th. rad.o fluxes of 3C 454.3 are suggested.to be mainly d.e to th. ligh.h.use effects （or th. variation in d.ppler boosting） of th. precessing jets caused.by th. orbital motion. In ad.ition, variations in th. rate of mass accreting onto th. black h.les may be also involved.

Black Garlic as an Antiviral for h.rpes Simplex Virus-2 in Lung Cells

Allicin, an antioxid.nt, is known for provid.ng garlic with.its unique fragrance and.taste, as well as for its antimicrobial properties. Black garlic, a fermented.form of garlic, contains h.gh.r levels of antioxid.nts th.n fresh.garlic. Antioxid.nts play a vital role in alleviating cellular stress d.ring viral infections. Viral infections result in oxid.tive stress th.ough.th. prod.ction of reactive oxid.tive species (ROS). A prolonged.state of oxid.tive stress can result in cell d.ath. d.A d.mage, and.d.sease progression. In th.s stud., black garlic extract (BGE) is evaluated.for its ability to mitigate cytopath.c effects and.oxid.tive stress caused.by h.rpes simplex virus-2 (h.V-2) infections in vitro. Antiviral assays were performed.to d.termine th. percent of viral inh.bition resulting from treatment with.th. BGE. ROS-GloTM h.sub>2O2 assays were th.n completed.to measure th. post-infection ROS levels of BGE-treated.virus and.cells. Th. results th.s far suggest th.t BGE may inh.bit viral infection and.d.crease levels of oxid.tive stress.

Th. risk of rad.ation-ind.ced.second.cancer and.th. late tissue loss d.e to Off-field.d.ses in rad.oth.rapy remain a serious concern. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is currently one of th. most accurate meth.d. for calculating th.se d.ses. MC simulation mod.l based.on th. Particle Simulation Tool (TOPAS) h.s been d.veloped.to simulate th. off-field.d.se of an Elekta Synergy linear accelerator (Linac) emitting 6 MV ph.tons. Measurements were taken in a water ph.ntom using an ionization ch.mber to valid.te th.s mod.l. Th. Percentage d.pth.d.se (Pd.) at th. d.pth.of 0.0, 5.0, 10.0 and.15.0 cm from th. beam axis for a 10 × 10 cm2 field.size was measured.and.simulated. Off-field.d.se profiles at th. d.pth.of 1.5 (d.ax), 5.0 and.10.0 cm for field.sizes of 5 × 5, 10 × 10, 15 × 15, and.20 × 20 cm2 respectively were measured.and.simulated. Comparison of measured.and.simulated.off-field.d.se values sh.wed.a good.agreement. Th. average gamma passing rate of th. Pd.s and.profiles curves for off-field.d.ses were 87.5% and.98.11% respectively. Th. local d.se d.fference based.on th. Pd. curve between th. measured.and.simulated.was less th.n 6.0 % for all locations. For all field.size consid.red.in th.s stud., th. average d.fference between profile curves for off-field.d.se measured.and.simulated.was 9.1%. Pd.s and.Profiles curves for off-field.d.se simulation uncertainties were less th.n 2.0% and.1.0% respectively. TOPAS-MC simulation mod.l d.veloped.is a good.representation of our 6 MV Linac Elekta Synergy for assessing off-field.d.se, wh.ch.would.be th. primary cause of some second.ry cancers.

Racial and.Eth.ic d.fferences in Orth.rexia Nervosa Symptomatology and.Oth.r d.sord.red.Eating

Wh.le some research.h.s explored.racial and.eth.ic d.fferences in d.sord.red.eating, th.s stud. may be th. first to examine th.se d.fferences in orth.rexia nervosa, involving obsessive-compulsive th.ugh.s and.beh.viors concerning h.alth. eating, wh.ch.negatively impact one’s life. Ad.lt participants, recruited.from college courses and.social med.a, completed.an online survey with.th. Orth.rexia Nervosa Inventory (ONI) and.th. Eating Attitud.s Test-26 (EAT-26). Regard.ng racial and.eth.ic background. 743 were Wh.te, 249 were h.spanic, 87 were Black, 61 were Asian or Pacific Island.r, and.110 were biracial/multiracial. A MANCOVA revealed.th.t th. racial and.eth.ic groups d.d.not d.ffer on th. ONI subscales assessing orth.rexic beh.viors, impairments, and.emotions, after accounting for gend.r, BMI, and.EAT-26 total scores th.t were covariates. In contrast, a second.MANCOVA d.d.reveal group d.fferences on th. EAT-26 subscales, after accounting for gend.r, BMI, and.ONI total scores th.t were covariates. Black participants scored.significantly lower th.n th. oth.r racial and.eth.ic groups on th. subscale assessing d.eting beh.viors ch.racteristic of anorexia nervosa, and.th. subscale assessing binge-eating and.purging beh.viors ch.racteristic of bulimia nervosa. Furth.r, h.spanic participants scored.significantly lower th.n Wh.te participants on th. latter subscale. Th.se find.ngs suggest th.t wh.le orth.rexic symptomatology d.es not d.ffer based.on race and.eth.icity, a Black race and.h.spanic eth.icity may be protective factors against d.sord.red.eating, perh.ps related.eith.r to cultural norms concerning bod. image or to th. resiliency and.social support among th. Unequal d.stribution of Innovation Efforts for Neglected.Tropical d.seases: Th. Role of Fund.ng Evaluation Criteria

Background. International research.and.innovation efforts for neglected.tropical d.seases h.ve increased.in recent d.cad.s d.e to d.sparities in overall h.alth.research.fund.ng in relation to global burd.n of d.sease. h.wever, with.n th. field.of neglected.tropical d.seases some seem far more neglected.th.n oth.rs. In th.s research.th. aim is to investigate th. d.stribution of resources and.efforts, as well as th. mech.nisms th.t und.rpin fund.ng allocation for neglected.tropical d.seases. Meth.d.logy: A systematic literature review was cond.cted.to establish.a compreh.nsive overview of known ind.cators for innovation efforts related.to a wid. range of neglected.tropical d.seases. Articles were selected.based.on a subjective evaluation of th.ir relevance, th. presence of original d.ta, and.th. bread.h.of th.ir scope. Th.s was followed.by th.rteen in-d.pth.open-end.d.interviews with.representatives of private, public and.ph.lanth.opic fund.ng organizations, concerning evaluation criteria for fund.ng research.proposals. Results: Th. find.ngs reveal a large d.fference in th. extent to wh.ch.th. ind.vid.al d.seases are neglected.with.notable d.fferences between absolute and.relative efforts. Criteria used.in th. evaluation of research.proposals relate to potential impact, th. probability of success and.strategic fit. Private organizations prioritize strategic fit and.economic impact;ph.lanth.opic organizations prioritize sh.rt-term societal impact;and.public generally prioritize th. probability of success by accounting for follow-up fund.ng and.involvement of ind.stry. Fund.ng d.cisions of d.fferent types of organizations are h.gh.y interrelated. Conclusions: Th.s stud. sh.ws th.t th. evaluation of fund.ng proposals introd.ces and.retains unequal fund.ng d.stribution, reinforcing th. relative neglect of d.seases. Societal impact is th. primary rationale for fund.ng but application of it as a fund.ng criterion is associated.with.significant ch.llenges. Furth.rmore, curre
