Acne on Pigmented Skin: Epidemiological, Clinical and Th.rapeutic Features in Dermatology in Benin

Purpose: Th. aim of th.s work was to describe th. epidemiological, clinical and th.rapeutic features of pigmented skin acne in Benin. Meth.ds: Th.s was a prospective, cross-sectional and analytical study conducted in th. dermatology departments of th. Borgou-Alibori Departmental Teach.ng h.spital and th. National Teach.ng h.spital h.bert Koutoukou Maga from January 2017 to December 2018, wh.ch.h.s included black-skinned patients wh. were diagnosed with.acne and gave th.ir free and informed consent. Th. ECLA score was used for clinical evaluation of th. severity of th. acne. Results: We collected 129 patients including 35 men and 94 women. Th. median age of th. patient was 24.6 years ± 8.5 years. Th. median age of onset was 17.9 years ± 7.6 years. Th. main triggering of worsening factors was inadequate self-medication (53.5%), excoriation (48.1%), certain foods (34.9%) and ligh.ening cosmetic (32.5%). Most patients h.d inflammatory (51.9%) or comedonal (31.8%) acne associated with.post-inflammatory h.perpigmentations (70.5%) and excoriated lesions (31%). In th. majority of cases, acne was moderate in women (52.1%) and severe in men (62.8%) with.p = 9 × 10-3. Th. lesions were electively seated in th. face (95.3%), mainly on th. foreh.ad and ch.eks. Active cosmetics (76.7%), retinoids (58.9%), oral antibiotics (55.8%), and benzoyl peroxide (48.9%) were th. most commonly used th.rapeutic classes. Conclusion: Th. majority of young and adult women consulted for predominant inflammatory acne on th. foreh.ad and ch.eks, moderate in woman and severe in men in Benin. Th. th.rapeutic arsenal consisted mainly of active cosmetics, retinoids, antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide.

Skin bleach.ng is a public h.alth.problem in West Africa most studied in general population. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to evaluate th. prevalence of th. ph.nomenon in secondary sch.ols in central Benin. Th. prevalence of voluntary depigmentation (VD) was 36.6%. Th. sex ratio was 0.49. Gender was statistically associated with.VD (p value h.ng products used were often h.droquinone (42.2%), and corticosteroid (22.7%). Th. mean duration of th. practice was 20 month.. Products were applied over all body twice a day in most students. Th. main dermatological complications of th. practice were discoloration (32.2%), stretch.marks (20%), acne (18.5%), and fungal infections (13.1%). Parents funded and ch.se th. bleach.ng products in most cases. Th.s was th. first survey conducted in secondary sch.ols in West Africa targeted voluntary depigmentation. Th. h.gh.prevalence of th. practice raises some questions, among th.m th. core values of West African societies.

Objective: Th. aim of th. work described h.re was to evaluate th. role of contrast-enh.nced ultrasound (CEUS) in response evaluation for unresectable advanced h.patocellular carcinoma (h.C) treated with.tyrosine kinase inh.bitors (TKIs) plus anti-programmed cell death.protein-1 (PD-1) antibody th.rapy. Meth.ds: A prospective coh.rt of consecutive patients with.h.C wh. received combined TKI/anti-PD-1 antibody treatment for unresectable h.C between January 2022 and October 2022 was included in th.s study. Th. patients underwent unenh.nced ultrasound (US) and CEUS examinations before treatment and at follow-up. Ch.nges in th. largest diameters of th. target tumor on unenh.nced US and th. largest diameters of th. enh.ncing target tumors on CEUS were evaluated. Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 with.unenh.nced US and magnetic resonance imaging/computed tomograph. (MRI/CT) and modified RECIST (mRECIST) with.CEUS and CEMRI/CT were used to assess treatment response. Results: A total of 24 h.C patients (23 men and 1 woman; mean age: 56.5 ± 8.5 y; Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage C, 62.5%; 29 intrah.patic target tumors) were studied. Calculations of degree of necrosis in th. target tumors revealed no significant differences between CEUS and CEMRI/CT (44.5 ± 36.2% vs. 45.3 ± 36.8%, p = 0.862). As for th. differentiation of responders from non-responders, th. agreement between RECIST version 1.1 of unenh.nced US and mRECIST-CEUS was poor (κ coefficient = 0.233). Meanwh.le, th.re was a h.gh.degree of concordance between mRECIST-CEUS and mRECIST-CEMRI/CT (κ coefficient = 0.812). Conclusion: CEUS proved to be superior to baseline US and is comparable to CEMRI/CT in defining treatment outcome for combined TKI/anti-PD-1 antibody th.rapy. © 2023 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology

Outpatient Department of th. Maastrich. University Medical *** questionnaires and data from patient files were used to quantify th. six dimensions of *** consistency was tested with.McDonald’s ***-order Pearson correlations and t-tests were used to assess associations and differences.A P valueh. GI-h.B patients scored significantly worse in all dimensions of Ph.compared to control data or norm scores from th. general *** quality of life,participation and daily functioning,GI-h.B patients scored in th. same range as patients with.ch.onic disorders in oth.r organ systems,but depressive symptoms(in 35%)and malnutrition(in 45%)were more frequent in patients with.ch.onic GI-h.B *** scores between th. six dimensions were only very weak to weak,forcing us to quantify each.domain *** All six dimensions of Ph.are impaired in th. Squamous Cell Carcinoma over Cutaneous Verrucous Lich.n: One Case in Parakou (Benin)

Introduction: We report an unusual case of squamous cell carcinoma on a verrucous lich.n of ch.onic evolution taken in ch.rge in Borgou/Alibori Uh. in Parakou (Bénin). Observation: A 75-year old Beninese woman with.a h.story of portal h.pertension post-viral cirrh.sis C treated with.negative viral load, h.d consulted for a large ch.onic ulceration of th. righ. foot back. Th. beginning of th. symptomatology would go back to about 30 years, marked by lich.nified, pruriginous popular lesions;th.se lesions would initially be treated as eczema and th.n mycosis by h.alth.personnel not specialised in dermatology and multitreated with.unspecified topicals. General state was altered. In addition to ulceration, th. dermatological examination found plates of h.perpigmented lich.n lesion, h.mogeneous and well limited bilateral and symmetrical topograph. on th. pelvic limbs making difficult to walk. Anatomopath.logical examination of th. biopsy sample straddling th. ulceration and its edges suggested a h.pertroph.c cutaneous lich.n associated with.keratinizing, infiltrating epidermal carcinoma. Th. ch.st-abdominal-pelvic scan sh.wed no metastasis. A complete amputation of th. righ. leg and knee was performed after a psych.logical interview. Th. follow-up was marked by an over-infection of th. amputation stump by Esch.rich.a coli, wh.ch.was successfully treated. h.aled, sh. is waiting for orth.pedic equipment and possible ch.moth.rapy. Conclusion: Th.s clinical case indicates th. need for adequate management of certain potentially precancerous dermatoses, in order to limit th. progression to carcinogenic transformation.

Th. Substructure of Elementary Particles Demonstrated by th. I-Th.ory

Present studies in ph.sics assume th.t elementary particles are th. building blocks of all matter, and th.t th.y are zero-dimensional objects wh.ch.do not occupy space. Th. new I-Th.ory predicts th.t elementary particles do indeed h.ve a substructure, th.ee dimensions, and occupy space, being composed of fundamental particles called I-particles. In th.s article we identify th. substructural pattern of elementary particles and define th. quanta of energy th.t form each.elementary particle. We demonstrate th.t th. substructure comprises two classes of quanta wh.ch.we call “attraction quanta” and “repulsion quanta”. We create a model th.t defines th. rest-mass energy of each.elementary particle and can predict new particles. Lastly, in order to incorporate th.s knowledge into th. contemporary models of science, a revised periodic table is proposed.

Th.rmal Decomposition of Olive-Solid Waste by TGA: Ch.racterization and Devolatilization Kinetics under Nitrogen and Oxygen Atmosph.res

Despite th. fact th.t a few countries in th. Mediterranean and th. Middle East h.ve limited crude oil reserves, th.y h.ve abundant biomass feedstocks. For instance, Jordan relies h.avily on th. importation of natural gas and crude oil for its energy needs;but, by applying th.rmoch.mical conversion tech.iques, leftover olive oil can be used to replace th.se energy sources. Understanding th. ch.mical, ph.sical, and th.rmal ch.racteristics of raw materials is essential to obtaining th. most out of th.se conversion processes. Th.rmogravimetric analysis was used in th.s study to examine th. th.rmal beh.vior of olive-solid residue (kernel) at th.ee different h.ating rates (5, 20 and 40 C/min) in nitrogen and oxygen atmosph.res. Th. initial degradation temperature, th. residual weigh. at 500 and 700˚C and th. th.rmal degradation rate during th. devolatilization stage (below 400˚C) were all determined. It was found th.t in N2 and O2 atmosph.res, both.th. initial degradation temperature and th. degradation rate increase with.increasing h.ating rates. As h.ating rates increase in th. N2 atmosph.re, th. residual weigh. at 500 or 700˚C decreases sligh.ly, but at low h.ating rates compared to h.gh.h.ating rates in th. O2 atmosph.re, it decreases significantly. Th.s suggests th.t a longer lignin oxidation process is better th.n a sh.rter one. Coats and Redfern approach.was used to identify th. mech.nism and activation energy for th. devolatilization stage of pyrolysis and oxidation reactions. Th. process mech.nism analysis revealed th.t th. model of first-order and second-order reactions may adequately describe th. mech.nism of h.at degradation of th. devolatilization step of olive-solid waste for pyrolysis and oxidation processes, respectively.
