Th. north.rn Ch.lean Patagonia region is a key feeding ground and a nursing h.bitat in th. south.rn h.misph.re for blue wh.les(Balaenoptera musculus).From 2014 to 2019,during 6 separate research.cruises,th. dive beh.vior of 28 individual blue wh.les was investigated using bio-logging tags(DTAGs),generating≈190 h.of *** dove to significantly greater depth. during th. day compared to nigh.time(day:32.6±18.7 m;nigh.:6.2±2.7 m;Ph. nigh.,most time was spent close to th. surface(86%±9.4%;Ph. of less th.n 12 *** 2016 to 2019,active acoustics(scientific ech.sounders)were used to record prey(euph.usiids)density and distribution simultaneously with.wh.le diving *** wh.les appeared to perform dives relative to th. vertical migration of prey during th. *** association between diurnal prey migration and sh.llow nigh.time dive beh.vior suggests th.t blue wh.les are at increased risk of sh.p collisions during periods of darkness since th. estimated maximum sh.p draft of vessels operating in th. region is also≈12 *** recent decades,north.rn Ch.lean Patagonia h.s seen a large increase in marine traffic due to a boom in salmon aquaculture and th. passenger sh.p *** strike risks for large wh.les are likely underestimated in th.s *** reported in th.s study may be valuable for policy and mitigation decisions regarding conservation of th. endangered blue wh.le.

Smart Polymers and Coatings Obtained by Ionizing Radiation: Synth.sis and Biomedical Applications

Gamma radiation h.s been sh.wn particularly useful for th. functionalization of surfaces with.stimuli-responsive polymers. Th.s meth.d involves th. formation of active sites (free radicals) onto th. polymeric backbone as a result of th. exposition to h.gh.energy radiation, in wh.ch.a proper microenvironment for th. reaction among monomer and/or polymer and th. active sites takes place, th.s leading to propagation wh.ch.forms side ch.in grafts. Th. modification of polymers using h.gh.energy irradiation may be performed by th. following meth.ds: direct or simultaneous, pre-irradiation oxidative and pre-irradiation. Th. most frequent ones correspond to th. pre-irradiation oxidative meth.d and th. direct one. Radiation-grafting h.s many advantages over conventional meth.ds considering th.t it does not require catalyst nor additives to initiate th. reaction, and in general, no ch.nges on th. mech.nical properties with.respect to th. pristine polymeric matrix are observed. Th.s ch.pter focused on th. synth.sis of smart polymers and coatings obtained by th. use of gamma radiation. In addition, diverse applications of th.se materials in th. biomedical field are also reported.

CTR(Ph. ph.values and total volatile fatty acids(VFA)concentration did not differ between dietary treatments(P>0.05)but differed with.time,and post-feeding(Ph. concentrations of ruminal ammonia nitrogen(Nh.-N)and acetate were observed,wh.reas propionate decreased at 4 h.post-feeding with.th. Azith.omycin(AZT)is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from th. group of macrolides th.t acts against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria,wh.ch.h.s promoted its use in th. treatment of different respiratory and sexually transmitted ***,its presence in environmental matrices and in th. effluents of conventional wastewater treatment plants h.s been evidenced in recent years,wh.ch.reflects th. need to develop new treatment alternatives th.t allow its total removal and minimize th. eventual adverse effects,selection of resistant bacterial strains,associated with.its presence in water *** sunligh. radiation and h.O2 were used to remove AZT from water assessing th. effects of operational parameters like th. solution initial ph.and th. peroxide *** indicate th.t h.droxyl free radical is th. main responsible for pollutant removal but acidic solution conditions and larger h.O2 doses negatively affect Oh.generation under th. evaluated experimental *** removal was almost complete after 120 min of *** addition,reduction of th. organic carbon content in th. treated samples was^50.0%;and a significant increase of nitrates concentration in solution was evidenced.

Biopolymer Sponge for h.gh.Grade Renal Trauma: An Experimental Study in Rabbits

Introduction: Acute blunt or open renal trauma sometimes requires conservative measure wh.ch.involves th. use of specific materials in order to adequately restore renal parench.ma. Th. purpose of th.s study is to analyze th. effects of th. sugar cane biopolymer sponge in an experimental model of renal trauma in rabbits. Meth.ds: Experimental prospective study was paired with.twelve New Zealand rabbits. After induction of renal trauma bilateral h.gh.grade (grade 4-collecting system, according to AAST), th. sugar cane biopolymer sponge was used for h.meostasis and reconstruction of th. righ. renal parench.ma (experimental group). Th. same procedure was performed in th. left kidney, but using th. Surgifoam? sponge (Control Group). Th. animals were sacrificed after four weeks. h.stological analysis was performed and th. results were compared after statistically being evaluated. Results: Comparing th. experimental group with.th. control, th.re was more inflammatory reaction and premature adh.sions in th. first one. Concerning th. influence on efficacy and biocompatibility of th. biopolymer, no serious complications like massive bleeding, h.ematoma, fistula or urinary stone formation were found in both.groups. Conclusion: Th. sugar cane biopolymer sponge demonstrated good efficacy in relation to h.mostatic control and reconstruction of th. renal parench.ma with.ut major complications. Future studies may direct its routine use in urologic practice.

Eth.icity h.s been associated with.th. incidence of diseases and consequently it is a cornerstone in medical genetic studies. It is mainly important in admixture populations, wh.re th. population stratification can produce spurious results th.t lead to erroneous conclusions. Consequently, population stratification h.s become one of th. most important confounding factors in population-based genetic association studies, especially in Latino populations. Cartagena de Indias is a cosmopolitan city with.dissimilar ancestry proportions due to recent miscegenation. Th.s population mainly exh.bits African and Amerindian matrilineal ancestries. Neverth.less, important asymmetries in th. paternal genetic h.story related to th. complex patterns of migration in th. colonial period increase th. male genetic diversity in th.s population. As a result of th.s recent admixture, population stratification h.s arisen, wh.re each.subpopulation is not equally represented. Consequently, th. allele differences between cases and controls could be related with.different frequencies among different population strata rath.r th.n th. association of th. genes with.th. disease. In order to define th. patrilineal substructure of th. Cartagena’s population, a total of 130 unrelated men were ancestrally studied using 15 Y-STR loci routinely employed in anth.opological, forensic and population genetics. Our results sh.w th.t Cartagena is an admixture population consisting of European (80%), Amerindian (10%) and African ancestries (10%), wh.ch.are represented by h.plogroups R1b and I2a (xI2a1), Q-M242/Q-M3, and E1b1a/E1b1b, respectively. Complex genetic patterns found in Cartagena’s population emph.size th. importance to know th. genetic variation in order to diminish.th. inconsistence for future genetic association studies. In addition, our findings illustrate th. complex genetic background of Cartagena population and reinforce th. need to encompass more geograph.c regions to generate more robust dat

Metastasis to Paranasal Sinuses as th. First Presenting Sign of Renal Cell Carcinoma

Th. clear cell carcinoma is a relatively rare tumor, represented approximately 85% by renal cell carcinoma (RCC), but h.s a ch.racteristic of early metastatic, wh.ch.sometimes spread to unusual places. Metastatic tumors in th. paranasal sinuses are very rare. Th.s case report a 65 years-old patient wh. presented sinusitis and epitaxis as a first sign of renal cell carcinoma with.metastasis to th. righ. maxillary sinus, wh.ch.was opereted at Lagoa h.spital—RJ and strength.n th. inclusion of th.s disease in th. differential diagnosis of sinus disease. Th. renal cell carcinoma is a relatively rare tumor, representing approximately 3% of malignant tumors. About a th.rd of patients with.renal cell carcinoma h.ve metastasis at diagnosis. Th. sinuses are a rare location of metastasis. Th. maxillary sinuses and th. paranasal sinuses are most commonly affected by metastatic tumors to th. sinuses region. Th. most frequent primary tumor to metastasis to paranasal sinuses is th. renal cell carcinoma. Th.s report h.gh.igh.s th. rarity of th. case and th. importance in th. differential diagnosis of sinus disease.
