Effects of chondroitin sulfate on alteration of actin cytoskeleton in rats with acute necrotizing pancreatitis

BACKGROUND: In experimental acute pancreatitis, a large amount of reactive oxygen species are produced, and in turn cytoskeletal changes may be induced in pancreatic tissue. These changes contribute to an imbalance of digestive enzyme segregation, transport, exocytosis and activation, resulting in cell injury. In this study, we assessed the effects of chondroitin sulfate (CS) on attenuation of oxidative damage and protection of F-actin in rats with acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP). METHODS: Ninety male Wistar rats were divided randomly into three groups. Group A was infused with 5% sodium taurocholate; group B was treated with CS; and group C served as control. Rats from the three groups were killed at 1, 3 or 8 hours. The levels were measured of malonyl dialdehyde (MDA), total superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione synthetase (GSH), serum amylase (SAM) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). F-actin immunostained with rhodamine-phalloidin was analyzed using a confocal laser scanning system and the content of F-actin protein was determined. RESULTS: The levels of SAM increased in groups A and B, whereas the levels of GSH, SOD and ATP in group A decreased markedly during pancreatitis, and MDA increased significantly. The levels of GSH, SOD and ATP in group B were higher than those in group A, but the level of MDA was lower than in group A. At the same time, ANP resulted in early disruption of the cytoskeleton with dramatic changes and a loss of F-actin. Administration of CS moderated the damage to the actin cytoskeleton. CONCLUSIONS: Retrograde infusion of sodium taurocholate via the pancreatic duct may produce pancreatic necrosis and a marked increase in serum amylase activity, induce a severe depletion of ATP level, prime lipid peroxidation, and damage F-actin. Treatment with CS can ameliorate pancreatic cell conditions, limit cell membrane peroxidation, protect F-actin, and attenuate pancreatitis.

Application of retrograde distal pancreatectomy

BACKGROUND: Since conventional methods are difficult to deal with pancreatic tumors close to the portal veins, we investigated the feasibility and norms for retrograde distal pancreatectomy by cutting the neck of the pancreas first. METHOD: The clinical data and surgical procedures of retrograde distal pancreatectomy given to 11 patients from July 2001 to June 2007 were analyzed. RESULTS: All 11 operations were completed successfully. The mean time of the operation was 143 71 minutes. The mean volume of hemorrhage was 239 ml. The mean time of hospitalization was 12 +/- 4.2 days. No blood transfusion was needed during the operation, and all patients had a good postoperative recovery. No neopathy of diabetes mellitus, pancreatic fistula or other complications occurred after the operation. The follow-up of all patients (4-60 months) showed that 3 patients survived for 14, 16 and 33 months, respectively, and the other patients are still alive. CONCLUSIONS: Retrograde distal pancreatectomy is useful for exposing the portal and superior mesenteric veins while avoiding operative injury. Interception of the blood supply of the spleen helps to reduce the volume of hemorrhage, while making the operation easier and the operative time short. It is advantageous for tumor resection of the body of the pancreas near the portal veins.

Possible relationship between cholecystectomy and subsequent occurrence of primary common bile duct stones:a retrospective review of data

BACKGROUND: Most reports on the prognosis of cholecystectomy have been short-term studied, and few long-term reports have suggested variable incidences of common bile duct stones after cholecystectomy. We retrospectively reviewed the data to find the possible association between cholecystectomy and the subsequent occurrence of primary common bile duct stones. METHODS: The data were reviewed retrospectively of 478 patients with primary common bile duct stones diagnosed and treated by endoscopic sphincterotomy at our hospitals between January 1994 and December 2003. RESULTS: Sixty-one (14.1%) of the 432 patients had a history of cholecystectomy, with an incidence rate markedly higher than that in the general population. The mean interval between cholecystectomy and the occurrence of primary common bile duct stones was 8.23 years, with the longest being 28 years and the shortest 2 years. Compared with the patients who had not undergone a prior cholecystectomy, those who had had a prior cholecystectomy more often accompanied with acute cholangiolitis (chi(2)=8.259, Prence of primary common bile duct stones. Perhaps patients with primary common bile duct stones who have had a prior cholecystectomy have a higher probability of infection of the biliary system. The infection may be one of the causes of occurrence of primary common bile duct stones after cholecystectomy.

Studies on the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss among musicians of traditional Chinese opera

The incidence of hearing impairment in musicians of traditional Chinese opera is higher than that in popular music and rock and roll music. The sound levels of different instruments used in traditional Chinese opera measured acoustically showed drums, gongs and cymbols to be hazardous to the ear. The conventional measures of prevention, such as ear plugs are not acceptable by the musicians because of interference to the musician’s hearing acuity. A rearrangement of the seats for the musicians was suggested by the authors, the percussive musicians should seat themselves one meter lower than the other musicians. Animal (guinea pigs) experiments by study of AP in EcochG and ul-trastructural observations of the cochlea have confirmed that our suggestion for prevention of noise -induced hearing impairment to be efficient.

Revealing the role of calcium ion intercalation of hydrated vanadium oxides for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Exploring suitable high-capacity V_(2)O_(5)-based cathode materials is essential for the rapid advancement of aqueous zinc ion batteries(ZIBs).However,the typical problem of slow Zn^(2+)diffusion kinetics has severely limited the feasibility of such *** this work,unique hydrated vanadates(CaVO,BaVO)were obtained by intercalation of Ca^(2+)or Ba^(2+)into hydrated vanadium *** the CaVO//Zn and BaVO//Zn batteries systems,the former delivered up to a 489.8 mAh g^(-1)discharge specific capacity at 0.1 A g^(-1).Moreover,the remarkable energy density of 370.07 Wh kg^(-1)and favorable cycling stability yard outperform BaVO,pure V_(2)O_(5),and many reported cathodes of similar ionic intercalation *** addition,pseudocapacitance analysis,galvanostatic intermittent titration(GITT)tests,and Trasatti analysis revealed the high capacitance contribution and Zn^(2+)diffusion coefficient of CaVO,while an in-depth investigation based on EIS elucidated the reasons for the better electrochemical performance of ***,ex-situ XRD,XPS,and TEM tests further demonstrated the Zn^(2+)insertion/extraction and Zn-storage mechanism that occurred during the cycle in the CaVO//Zn battery *** work provides new insights into the intercalation of similar divalent cations in vanadium oxides and offers new solutions for designing cathodes for high-capacity aqueous ZIBs.

The impact of demographic dynamics on food consumption and its environmental outcomes:Evidence from China

With increasing population and changing demographics,food consumption has experienced a significant transition in quantity and ***,a dearth of knowledge remains regarding its environmental impacts and how it responds to demographic dynamics,particularly in emerging economies like *** the two-stage Quadratic Almost Demand System(QUAIDS)model,this study empirically examines the impact of demographic dynamics on food consumption and its environmental outcomes based on the provincial data from 2000 to 2020 in *** various scenarios,according to changes in demographics,we extend our analysis to project the long-term trend of food consumption and its environmental impacts,including greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions,water footprint(WF),and land appropriation(LA).The results reveal that an increase in the proportion of senior people significantly decreases the consumption of grain and livestock meat and increases the consumption of poultry,egg,and aquatic products,particularly for urban ***,an increase in the proportion of males in the population leads to higher consumption of poultry and aquatic ***,in the current scenario of an increased aging population and sex ratio,it is anticipated that GHG emissions,WF,and LA are likely to decrease by 1.37,2.52,and 3.56%,*** importantly,in the scenario adhering to the standards of nutritional intake according to the Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents in 2022,GHG emissions,WF,and LA in urban areas would increase by 12.78,20.94,and 18.32%,*** findings suggest that changing demographics should be considered when designing policies to mitigate the diet-environment-health trilemma and achieve sustainable food consumption.

Effects of dimethyl ether and ethanol additions on soot transition in ethylene counterflow diffusion flames

This paper investigates the effect of blending dimethyl ether(DME)and ethanol on the soot transition periods in ethylene counterflow diffusion flames by using a novel optical diagnostic *** soot critical transition point in different conditions is identified experimentally and *** kinds of flames are carried out to gain the soot critical transition point in counterflow diffusion flames by changing oxygen fraction(Xo)and changing volume flow rates of fuel and oxidizer(Qv).The red-green-blue(RGB)ratio method is used to precisely identify the soot critical transition point,and chemical kinetic simulations are performed to analyze the detailed reaction *** results show that compared to the ethylene flame,the soot critical transition point occurs at a higher Xoand a lower Qvwhen DME or ethanol is *** addition of DME and ethanol can inhibit soot formation,due to the degree of soot formation reaction being lower than the degree of the oxidation reaction in the blending flames.

The paper investigates the escape probability for isotropic emitters near a Kerr black *** propose a new approach to obtain the escape probability in a general manner,going beyond previous case-by-case *** approach is based on studies of the black hole shadow with astrometric observable and can be applied to emitters with an arbitrary 4-velocities and locations,even to the emitters outside of the equatorial *** also consider representative examples illustrating how escape probabilities vary with distance,velocity,and inclination ***,this new approach provides an effective method for studying escape probabilities near Kerr black holes.
