N-acetyl-L-cysteine combined with mesalamine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis: Randomized,placebo-controlled pilot study

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of oral N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) co-administration with mesalamine in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. METHODS: Thirty seven patients with mild to moderate UC were randomized to receive a four-wk course of oral mesalamine (2.4 g/d) plus N-acetyl-L-cysteine (0.8 g/d) (group A) or mesalamine plus placebo (group B). Patients were monitored using the Modified Truelove-Witts Severity Index (MTWSI). The primary endpoint was clinical remission (MTWSI ≤ 2) at 4 wk. Secondary endpoints were clinical response (defined as a reduction from baseline in the MTWSI of ≥ 2 points) and drug safety. The serum TNF-α, interleukin-6, interleukin-8 and MCP-1 were evaluated at baseline and at 4 wk of treatment. RESULTS: Analysis per-protocol criteria showed clinical remission rates of 63% and 50% after 4 wk treatment with mesalamine plus N-acetyl-L-cysteine (group A) and mesalamine plus placebo (group B) respectively (OR = 1.71; 95% CI: 0.46 to 6.36; P = 0.19; NNT = 7.7). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of data indicated a significant reduction of MTWSI in group A (P = 0.046) with respect to basal condition without significant changes in the group B (P = 0.735) during treatment. Clinical responses were 66% (group A) vs 44% (group B) after 4 wk of treatment (OR = 2.5; 95% CI: 0.64 to 9.65; P = 0.11; NNT = 4.5). Clinical improvement in group A correlated with a decrease of IL-8 and MCP-1. Rates of adverse events did not differ significantly between both groups. CONCLUSION: In group A (oral NAC combined with mesalamine) contrarily to group B (mesalamine alone), the clinical improvement correlates with a decrease of chemokines such as MCP-1 and IL-8. NAC addition not produced any side effects.

Radon and Thoron （222Rn and 220Rn） Concentration Distribution Study on Three Detection Planes inside of a Closed Room Using Nuclear Track Methodology

The aim of this study is to determine the indoor radon and thoron concentration distribution on three detection planes, inside of a controlled closed room with microclimate conditions with NTM （Nuclear Track Methodology）, using CR-39 Lantrack bared detectors. One hundred sixty two （162） 1.9 cm × 0.9 cm CR-39 polycarbonate chips were placed in each one of the three planes, 2.0 m × 2.0 m square structures, distributed uniformly in 18 columns and 18 lines, in each plane. After three months exposure to indoor radon and thoron inside of the closed room, with a main concentration value of 862 ± 49 Bq/m3, all the detectors were chemically etched in KOH-6.25M solution to 60 ± 1 ℃ for 18 h, following the well established protocols for indoor radon survey, by the Dosimetry Applications Laboratory of the Physics Institute, UNAM （National Autonomous University of Mexico） and later on read by DIAS （Digital Image Analysis System）.The results show that the radon and thoron concentration distribution is not homogeneous in anyone of the planes faces. The six faces of the three planes measured, have a very particular distribution. From the results, it can be observed that each side of each plane shows a peculiar distribution, with gradients of concentrations higher than 50% from one area to another of the same measured plane. These results can help to understand the dynamics of the radioactive gases,and their measurements.

Indoor Radon （^222Rn） Concentration Level Study in Child Care Centers and Kindergartens, Using Nuclear Track Methodology （NTM）

As it is known, staying for long periods of time in a place with high concentration of radon is a health hazard. This health risk can be increased into adulthood, if at infant ages the young people grow inside places with important indoor radon levels. Causal associations between exposure level and lung cancer have been demonstrated in epidemiological studies around the world, suggesting that for younger age children groups, the risk coefficient of lung cancer for inhaled radon and their daughters is about a factor of 4 on children from recent born to 10 years old, and 2 for ages between 10 to 20 years old. The aim of this work is to determine the indoor radon levels where infants, from 3 months to 6 years old, remain long times in child care centers and kindergartens. Indoor radon （222Rn） concentration levels were measured in the child care centers and kindergartens of the 16 political administrative regions, covering 5% of the total in Mexico City. This study was conducted over a one-year period, divided into four three-month periods coinciding with the seasons. Nuclear Track Methodology was selected for the measurements, and a passive close-end-cup-device was designed specifically to be used in children places. In this study, the results of measurements of indoor radon concentration in child care centers and kindergartens in Mexico City are encouraging, finding indoor radon levels between 26 Bq/m^3 and 75 Bq/m^3 with an average value of 51 Bq/m^3. It can be considered that the indoor radon concentration levels are low in this type of buildings, due to the benign climate in the city, the architecture design of the constructions, and the ventilation habits of the population.

This paper presents an upper limb exoskeleton that allows cognitive(through electromyography signals)and physical user interaction(through load cells sensors)for passive and active exercises that can activate neuroplasticity in the rehabilitation process of people who suffer from a neurological *** the exoskeleton to be easily accepted by patients who suffer from a neurological injury,we used the ISO9241-210:2010 as a methodology design *** the first steps of the design process,design requirements were collected from previous usability tests and ***,as a second step,a technological solution is proposed,and as a third step,the system was evaluated through performance and user *** part of the technological solution and to allow patient participation during the rehabilitation process,we have proposed a hybrid admittance control whose input is load cell or electromyography *** hybrid admittance control is intended for active therapy exercises,is easily implemented,and does not need musculoskeletal modeling to ***,electromyography signals classification models and features were evaluated to identify the best settings for the cognitive human–robot interaction.

Background:Lung hypoplasia,pulmonary persistent hypertension of the newborn and its morphological changes are the main features in congenital diaphragmatic hernia(CDH).This study was undertaken to investigate if antenatal use of sildenafil and/or bosentan attenuates vascular remodeling,promotes branching,and improves alveolarization in experimental nitrofeninduced ***:Nitrofen(100 mg)was gavage-fed to pregnant rats at post conception day(PCD)9 to induce *** rats were randomized to 5 groups:1)control;2)nitrofen;3)nitrofen+sildenafil 100 mg/kg per day at PCD 16-20;4)nitrofen+bosentan 30 mg/kg per day,at PCD 16-20,and 5)nitrofen+bosentan+sildenafil,same doses and administration *** cesarean delivery,the offsprings were sacrifi *** diaphragmatic defect and pulmonary hypoplasia were identified,and the lungs were *** wall thickness,bronchiolar density and alveolarization were ***:The offsprings with CDH were characterized by severe pulmonary hypoplasia(lung weight-to-body weight ratio:0.0263[95%confidence interval(CI)0.0242-0.0278)]in the nitrofen group versus 0.0385(95%CI 0.0355-0.0424)in the control group(P=0.0001).Pulmonary arterial wall thickness was decreased to 3.0(95%CI 2.8-3.7)μm in the nitrofen+sildenafil group versus 5.0(95%CI 4.1-4.9)μm in the nitrofen group(P=0.02).Terminal bronchioles increased to 13.7(95%CI 10.7-15.2)μm in the nitrofen+bosentan group in contrast to 8.7(95%CI 7.2-9.4)μm in the nitrofen group(P=0.002).More significant differences(P=0.0001)were seen in terminal bronchioles in the nitrofen+sildenafil+bosentan group than in the nitrofen group[14.0(95%CI 12.5-15.4)μm versus 8.5(95%CI 7.1-9.3)μm].Pulmonary arterial wall thickness was also decreased in the former ***:In this rat model,antenatal treatment with sildenafil attenuates vascular *** promotes the development of terminal bronchioles in nitrofen-induced CDH.

目的比较不同种族***菌株CagA蛋白羧基端结构以及诱导AGS细胞延伸、分泌IL-8能力的差异。方法 PCR扩增CagA3′端可变区DNA序列并进行测序,获得CagA3′端可变区氨基酸序列。以不同***菌株与AGS细胞孵育,观察AGS延伸细胞的百分数,测定细胞培养上清IL-8含量。结果美籍亚裔和美籍非裔菌株的CagA羧基端氨基酸第3个EPIYA前后的氨基酸序列存在明显差异。不同种族cag PAI+***导致AGS细胞延伸、分泌IL-8能力无明显差异。cag PAI+***诱导细胞延伸AGS细胞、分泌IL-8的能力明显大于cag ***。结论不同种族***菌株CagA蛋白羧基端结构存在差异。***-lori菌株诱导AGS细胞延伸、分泌IL-8的能力与cag PAI有关。

Assessment of Present and Future Radioactive Contamination at Global Scale

As a result of more than two thousand nuclear tests performed since 1945, two war actions and few accidents in nuclear reactor, it does already exist a radioactive contamination at global scale. This contamination has been accumulated mainly in marine sediments, because sea is about 80% of planet surface, and solid fission products released by nuclear explosions are transported by wind first and then by rain to liquid and solid portions on earth, while gaseous fission products are diffused in the atmosphere. In this way, heavy, high yielding fission products, such as 137Cs, get marine sediments, where they are found mixed with heavy radioactive natural elements such as U, Th and their also radioactive decay products. But since alkaline are so abundant on earth, it is also found natural radioactive isotope 4~K, 0.0118% of isotopes forming K element, with half life 1.28 ~ l09, in the time range of planet age and elements origin. So, one easy way to assess both the importance and evaluation of radioactive contamination at global scale should be to establish a RCF （radioactive contamination factor） as a percentage of 137Cs contaminant radioactivity in marine sediments, compared to 4~K natural radioactivity present from the very beginning of earth, both expressed as Bq per gram of sediment. In the frame of these rather general considerations, a research project has started in Mexico whose varied purposes are： to characterize sea regions in both vast littorals in the country, by its natural 4~K radioactivity present in sea salts, as well as to determine if 137Cs traces produced by recent radioactive contamination have reached their coasts. Also, to assess the 137Cs traces already present in marine sediments as a result of more than two thousand nuclear test explosions performed till now, rather than contamination produced by four main accidents in nuclear reactors during the last 60 years. Determination of Epibionts of the Marine Turtle Lepidochelys Ofivacea （Eschscholtz, 1829） Nesting in Ceuta Beach, Sinaloa, Mexico

Epibionts are floristic and faunistic benthonic organisms living attached to the skin of another animal; this phenomenon is well known as epibiosis and has been documented for all species of marine turtles. The interaction between the turtle and epibiotic organisms is to provide substrate for the epibionts communities, their presence are based mainly in the shell and in other anatomical structures in lower intensity. It has been registered that some epibionts affect growth, and can cause diverse damage in anatomical structures like the eyes, mouth, and limbs. They are usually vectors of disease. For such reasons the objective of the present work is to determinate the epibionts species associated with the marine turtle Lepidochelys olivacea in Ceuta beach, Sinaloa, Mexico. During the nesting season May-December of 2008-2009, the female turtles nesting and strandings were monitored and epibionts were collected. Eleven species distributed in the following taxa were obtained： fishes of the family Echeneidae, Hirudineos （Ozobranchus branchiatus, Ozobranchus margoi）, Arthropods （Chelonibia testudinaria, Lepas sp., Conchoderma virgatum） and the first registry of Stephanolepas muricata for Lepidochelys olivacea. According to the records from Ceuta Beach the species of epibionts are still being registered with the exception of Ozobranchus margoi, and Stephanolepas muricata, thus, suggesting further research on epibiont organisms.
