Lattice thermal conductivities of zirconium carbide(ZrC_(x),x=1,0.75 and 0.5)ceramics with different carbon vacancy concentrations were calculated using a combination of first-principles calculations and the Debye-Callaway *** Gruneisen parameters,Debye temperatures,and phonon group velocities were deduced from phonon dispersions of ZrC_(x) determined using first-principles *** addition,the effects of average atomic mass,grain size,average atomic volume and Zr isotopes on the lattice thermal conductivities of ZrC_(x) were analyzed using phonon scattering *** lattice thermal conductivity decreased as temperature increased for ZrC,ZrC_(0.75) and ZrC_(0.5)(Zr2 C),and decreased as carbon vacancy concentration ***,ZrC_(x) can be tailored from a thermal conducting material for ZrC with high lattice thermal conductivity to a thermal insulating material for ZrC_(0.5) with low lattice thermal ***,it opens a window to tune the thermal properties of ZrC_(x) by controlling the carbon vacancy content.

In a poem composed in 1832, the Chosrn-Korean polymath Chrng Yagyong （1762-1836） declared his fidelity towards Confucian literary principles. Chrng＇s poem was a product of an elite education, and in both form and content, it embodied the ideals of the Chosrn elite： written in classical Chinese rather than Korean, it was an expression of cultural self-confidence. From the point of view of nationalism and its emphasis on vernaculars, it seems strange to define oneself through a cosmopolitan written language. But Chrng was no nationalist. He was a Confucian conservative, and the sense of distinction and difference that animated Chrng＇s poem was Confucian and literary. His articulation of such ideals manifested unease over the erosion of Confucian literary values in China and the prospect of the same occurring in Chos6n under Chinese influence. The source of that influence was books imported from China. What Chrng was reacting against was, at root, the commodification of literature and all that had entailed in Ming （1368-1644） and Qing （1644-1911） China. Although such concerns had grown increasingly urgent a half-century before, they had a long pedigree in Choson, stretching back to debates that had arisen in relation to Ming China and the principal emblem of the commodification of literature： commercial bookstores. This paper examines some of the principal differences between Chinese and Korean literary cultures that were embodied in Chang. It therefore begins with a brief overview of Chang and his poem, before turning to a discussion of some key sociopolitical and intellectual features that distinguished Chosrn＇s literary culture from that of China. sixteenth-century attitudes towards bookstores are discussed to contextualize subsequent worries over Chinese books, with special attention given to the historical and historiographical dimensions of the question, before concluding with an assessment of the final moments of direct Chinese literary influence in Korea.

One area of concern in longwall coal mines is the active gob directly behind the longwall face,where high concentrations of methane are likely to accumulate and active roof caving *** computational fluid dynamics(CFD)to simulate gas flows in and through the gob,most researchers have represented the entire gob as a porous medium governed by Darcy’s ***,Darcy-type porous flow may not be applicable for the highly porous and unconsolidated fringes of the *** addition,porous medium models do not allow for representative combustion modeling to simulate in-gob ignition and flame *** study presents a hybrid approach to modeling the gob using CFD:the outer part of the gob is modeled as discrete objects that simulate coarse rock rubble,while the gob center is modeled as a porous medium.

Various extensional structures,e.g.,half grabens,detachment faults,and metamorphic core complexes,were formed in the Liaodong *** are two metamorphic core complexes (mcc's) in the western part of the Peninsula,*** Liaonan mcc and the Wanfu *** share the same lower plate and constitute a conjugate mcc *** Dayingzi detachment fault system and the three half grabens are exposed in the central and eastern parts,respectively.U-Pb dating of zircons from syntectonic plutons in the lower plates of the detachment faults and volcanic rocks from half graben basins indicates that their formation spans from 135 to 106 Ma,although the individual structure may be formed at a particular *** the differences in age of formation,in the regional attitudes,and in rooting depths,the extensional structures have great similarities in their kinematics,geometrical asymmetry,and coeval tectono-magmatic activities ***,the extensional structures constitute conjugate associations,but a particular one generally has asymmetric *** Cretaceous extensional structures extend from the Liaodong Peninsula to North China,Northeast China,south China,and eastern Mongolia and Transbaikal area in *** extensional structures from different areas share many common *** Liaodong Peninsula is the miniature of the East Asia with respect to the formation of extensional structures in Early *** is suggested that the interaction of the Izanagi Plate with Eurasia Plate is responsible for the extension of *** structural mobility of the lithosphere,partly attributed to the fluid flow at the depth,and detachment faulting in both the crustal and mantle lithosphere provide important constraints on the development of Early Cretaceous extensional structures in the East Asia.

Cysteine proteases continue to provide validated targets for treatment of human *** neurodegenerative disorders,multiple cysteine proteases provide targets for enzyme inhibitors,notably caspases,calpains,and *** reactive,active-site cysteine provides specificity for many inhibitor designs over other families of proteases,such as aspartate and serine;however,a)inhibitor strategies often use covalent enzyme modification,and b)obtaining selectivity within families of cysteine proteases and their isozymes is *** review provides a general update on strategies for cysteine protease inhibitor design and a focus on cathepsin B and calpain 1 as drug targets for neurodegenerative disorders;the latter focus providing an interesting query for the contemporary assumptions that irreversible,covalent protein modification and low selectivity are anathema to therapeutic safety and efficacy.

Although shifts in life-history traits of insular vertebrates, as compared with mainland populations, have been observed in many taxa, few studies have examined the relationships among individual life-history traits on islands. Lifehistory theory also predicts that there is a trade-off between body size and reproductive effort, and between egg size and clutch size. We surveyed the rice frog, Fejervarya limnocharis, on 20 islands within the Zhoushan Archipelago and two nearby sites on the mainland of China to compare differences in life-history traits and to explore relationships among those traits. Rice frog females reached a greater body size on half of the smaller islands among the total 20 surveyed islands, and larger egg size, decreased clutch size and reduced reproductive effort on most of the islands when compared to the two mainland sites. Insular body size was negatively correlated with reproductive effort. There was a negative correlation between egg size and clutch size. Results suggest that life-history theory provides a good explanation for co-variation between body size and reproductive effort, and between egg size and clutch size in rice frogs on the islands.

Understanding the sensitivity of tidal flats to environmental changes is ***,most studies rely on process-based models to systematically explain the morphodynamic evolution of tidal *** this study,we proposed an alternative empirical approach to explore tidal flat dynamics using statistical indices based on long-term time series of daily surface elevation *** elevation dynamic(sED)indices focus on the magnitude and period of surface elevation changes,while morphodynamic signature(MDs)indices relate sediment dynamics to environmental *** statistical analyses were applied to an intervention site in the Netherlands to determine the effect of recently constructed groynes on the tidal *** these analyses,we were able to(1)detect a reduction in the daily sED and(2)determine that the changes in the daily sED were predominantly caused by the reduction in wave impact between the groynes rather than the reduction in tidal ***,the presented results showed that the combination of novel statistical indices provides new insights into the trajectories of tidal flats,ecosystem functioning,and sensitivity to physical drivers(wind and tides).Finally,we suggested how the sED and MDs indices may help to explore the future trajectories and climate resilience of intertidal habitats.

Climate and water availability greatly affect each season’s grape yield and *** models to accurately predict environment impacts on fruit productivity and quality is a huge *** calibrated and validated the functional-structural model,GrapevineXL,with a data set including grapevine seasonal midday stem water potential(�xylem),berry dry weight(DW),fresh weight(FW),and sugar concentration per volume([sugar])for a wine grape cultivar(Vitis vinifera *** Franc)in field conditions over 13 years in Bordeaux,*** results showed that the model could make a fair prediction of seasonal�xylem and good-to-excellent predictions of berry DW,FW,[sugar]and leaf gas exchange responses to predawn and midday leaf water potentials under diverse environmental conditions with 14 key *** running virtual experiments to mimic climate change,an advanced veraison(*** onset of ripening)of 14 and 28 days led to significant decreases of berry FW by 2.70%and 3.22%,clear increases of berry[sugar]by 2.90%and 4.29%,and shortened ripening duration in 8 out of 13 simulated years,***,the impact of the advanced veraison varied with seasonal patterns of climate and soil water ***,the results showed that the GrapevineXL model can predict plant water use and berry growth in field conditions and could serve as a valuable tool for designing sustainable vineyard management strategies to cope with climate change.
