Alzheimer’s Disease: An Analysis of Gender Effects

Alzheimer’s disease is a dreaded outcome that affects both men and women in later years of life. While root causes of this form of dementia are not clear, various factors are known that contribute to the risk of development and the reduction in risks based on gender and our choices in life. This paper evaluates the various factors that affect the risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease as we age. The focus of this paper is gender considerations in a mathematical model programmed in Excel. The model was first presented by gregory [1] and was calibrated on one of the original population data sets with 50 - 50 male and female participants. This model overpredicted the risks for women and underpredicted the risks for men. A solution to this problem was found based on published values of sex hormones for men and women. Based on the expanded current model, two major factors contribute to the gender differences in predictions: gender factor values (10.5 ml·kg-1·min-1 for men and 3.5 ml·kg-1·min-1 for women) used in VO2max equations and a sex hormone factor that changes as hormones change for men and women with age. Smoking differences associated with gender and the risk associated with smoking was added to the model. Cognitive reserve based on education differences between men and women was also added. These are minor components compared to hormone effects. The expanded model includes an input for unsaturated fat diets and cholesterol reducing medications and use of Viagra by men that is known to reduce risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Predictions from the expanded model closely matched measured values from age 50 through age 95 for each gender with R2 values of 0.99, which were highly significant (p = 0.001). WASO: Why Does It Increase with Age?

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder, especially for seniors. WASO (time awake after sleep onset), a component of insomnia, tends to increase with age. There are also many variations in WASO for seniors. To better understand the nature of insomnia, an equation was developed to predict WASO using maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) as a measure of fitness associated with aerobic exercise. Predictions from the equation matched measured values with an R2 = 0.98. The results were highly significant (p 2max as a function of age and relative fitness (a measure of aerobic fitness independent of age). The two equations were combined to predict WASO as a function of age, gender, and relative fitness. Based on these results, it appears that aerobic exercise to improve relative fitness can be used to reduce WASO. The WASO model explains the numerous reports of reduced WASO associated with long-term exercise programs. The model also explains why WASO increases with age and why high WASO values associate with early death.

A mathematical model was developed to predict the risk of having a stroke as a person ages. The age component was derived from the concept that the change in risk of stroke with age is a function of the current risk of developing a stroke. This equation modeled the trend with age reported in the literature for two different data sets with R2 values of 0.97 or better for both men and women. A second equation of a similar nature was developed to predict the accumulation of white matter hyperintensities, WmH, as a person ages. It appears that each equation includes a set of common risk factors. This set of common risk factors allows an individual’s risk for stroke to be based on measured WmH. A third equation links WmH with the risk of developing a stroke. This equation allows an individual to use measured WmH from brain scans to predict the future risk of developing a stroke. In theory, a person with a relatively high measurement of WmH can project future risk for stroke with age and use counter measures such as exercise and medications to keep other risk factors low as a person continues to age.

Ordered SrTiO_3 Nanoripples Induced by Focused Ion Beam

Ordered nanoripples on the niobium-doped SrTiO_3 surfaces were fabricated through focused ion beam bombardment. The surface morphology of the SrTiO_3 nanoripples was characterized using in situ focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy. The well-aligned SrTiO_3 nanostructures were obtained under optimized ion irradiation conditions. The characteristic wavelength was measured as about 210 nm for different ion beam currents. The relationship between the ion irradiation time and current and SrTiO_3 surface morphology was analyzed. The presented method will be an effective supplement for fabrication of SrTiO_3 nanostructures that can be used for ferroelectric and electronic applications.

As atmospheric CO_2 levels rise, the development of physical or chemical adsorbents for CO_2 capture and separation is of great importance on the way towards a sustainable low-carbon future. Porous organic polymers are promising candidates for CO_2 capture materials owing to their structural flexibility, high surface area, and high stability. In this review, we highlight high-performance porous organic polymers for CO_2 capture and summarize the strategies to enhance CO_2 uptake and selectivity, such as increasing surface area, increasing interaction between porous organic polymers and CO_2, and pore surface functionalization.

Although nanotechnology has led to important advances in in vitro diagnostics, the development of nanosensors for in vivo detection remains very challenging. Here, we demonstrated the proof-of-principle of in vivo detection of nudeic acid targets using a promising type of surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） nanosensor implanted in the skin of a large animal model （pig）. The in vivo nanosensor used in this study involves the ＂inverse molecular sentinel＂ detection scheme using plasmonics-active nanostars, which have tunable absorption bands in the near infrared region of the ＂tissue optical window＂, rendering them efficient as an optical sensing platform for in vivo optical detection. Ex vivo measurements were also performed using human skin grafts to demonstrate the detection of SERS nanosensors through tissue. In this stud, a new core--shell nanorattle probe with Raman reporters trapped between the core and shell was utilized as an internal standard system for self-calibration. These results illustrate the usefulness and translational potential of the SERS nanosensor for in vivo biosensing.

The abundance of predatory phytoseiid mites,Typhlodromus pyri,important biological control agents of spider mite pests in numerous crops,is positively influenced by the density of leaf trichomes and tuft-form domatia in vein *** of the genetic regions controlling both trophic levels could facilitate the improvement of predatory mite habitat in breeding *** abundance of *** and non-glandular trichomes was measured in a segregating F1 family derived from the cross of the complex Vitis hybrid,‘Horizon’,with Illinois 547-1(*** B38×*** B9),finding positive correlation among *** density genetic maps were used to localize one major quantitative trait locus(QTL)on chromosome 1 of Illinois 547-1 associated with both predatory mite abundance and leaf *** QTL explained 23%of the variation in phytoseiid abundance and similar amounts of variance in domatia rating(21%),domatia size(16%),leaf bristle density(37%in veins and 33%in blades),and leaf hair density(20%in veins and 15%in blades).Another nine QTL distributed among chromosomes 1,2,5,8,and 15 were associated solely with trichome density,and explained 7–17%of the phenotypic ***,our results provide evidence of the genetic architecture of non-glandular trichomes in Vitis,with a major locus influencing trichome densities,domatia size and predatory mite *** information is relevant for breeding grapevines with a more favorable habitat for biological control agents.

The archetypal 3d mott insulator hematite,Fe_(2)O_(3),is one of the basic oxide components playing an important role in mineralogy of Earth’s lower *** high pressure-temperature behavior,such as the electronic properties,equation of state,and phase stability is of fundamental importance for understanding the properties and evolution of the Earth’s ***,we study the electronic structure,magnetic state,and lattice stability of Fe_(2)O_(3)at ultra-high pressures using the density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory(DFT+DmFT)*** the vicinity of a mott transition,Fe_(2)O_(3) is found to exhibit a series of complex electronic,magnetic,and structural *** particular,it makes a phase transition to a metal with a post-perovskite crystal structure and site-selective local moments upon compression above 75 *** show that the site-selective phase transition is accompanied by a charge disproportionation of Fe ions,with Fe^(3±δ)and δ~0.05–0.09,implying a complex interplay between electronic correlations and the *** results suggest that site-selective local moments in Fe_(2)O_(3) persist up to ultra-high pressures of~200–250 GPa,i.e.,sufficiently above the core-mantle *** latter can have important consequences for understanding of the velocity and density anomalies in the Earth’s lower mantle.

All plants including cotton host a wide range of microorganisms as endophytes. There is a growing appreciation of the prevalence, ecological significance and management potential of facultative fungal endophytes in protecting plants from pests, pathogens and environmental stressors. Hemipteran sucking bugs have emerged as major pests across the U.S. cotton belt, reducing yields directly by feeding on developing reproductive structures and indirectly by vectoring plant pathogens. We used no-choice and simultaneous choice assays to examine the host selection behavior of western tarnished plant bugs （Lygus hesperus） and southern green stink bugs （Nezara viridula） in response to developing flower buds and fruits from cotton plants colonized by 1 of 2 candidate beneficial fungal endophytes, Phialemonium inflatum or Beauveria bassiana. Both insect species exhibited strong negative responses to flower buds （L. hesperus） and fruits （N. viridula） from plants that had been colonized by candidate endophytic fungi relative to control plants under both no-choice and choice conditions. Behavioral responses of both species indicated that the insects were deterred prior to contact with plant tissues from endophyte-colonized plants, suggesting a putative role for volatile compounds in mediating the negative response. Our results highlight the role of fungal endophytes as plant mutualists that can have positive effects on plant resistance to pests.
