Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), have demonstrated efficacy treating a number of acute conditions, encompassing a broad range of symptoms and syndromes, in addition to being first-line treatment for epilepsy. Clinically, since their inception, AEDs have been used off-label for acute and chronic medical conditions, both as primary and as adjuvant therapies. In this review, we describe the observed clinical effectiveness of AEDs across a set of commonly encountered acute conditions in the general hospital: traumatic brain injury, pain, alcohol withdrawal. In describing the individual benefits and usages of specific agents, the applicability of these agents to other common neuropsychiatric conditions may be further explored.

The chestnuts genus(Castanea spp.)is comprised of economically important trees native to the Northern hemisphere that are used as food and hardwood ***,a very efficient method for micropropagation of European×Japanese chestnut hybrids(Castanea sativa×***)is *** Plant Medium was used as the basal *** vitro shoots of four rootstock cultivars were micropropagated without shoot-tip necrosis on multiplication medium containing 5.7 or 11.4μmol·l^(−1)zeatin riboside,and were rooted on rooting medium containing 2.46μmol·l^(−1)indolebutyric *** shootmultiplication rates for each cultivarwere 2–5 *** vitro rooting percentages for four cultivars were 87%for‘Maraval’,67%for‘Marigoule’,93%for‘Marsol’,and 97%for‘Précoce Migoule’.Within a 5 week period,80%–95%of rooted shoots were successfully acclimated under high humidity conditions after they were planted in either soil or rockwool.

Background: The brain bioavailability of novel small molecules developed to address central nervous system disease is classically documented through ex vivo or in vivo analyses conducted in rodent models. Data acquired in rodent models are, however,not easily transferrable to human as the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics profiles of the species are quite ***: Using drugs selected for their differential transport across the blood-brain barrier, we here demonstrate the feasibility of brain microdialysis in normal vigil macaque monkey by measuring brain extracellular fluid bioavailability of carbamazepine, digoxin, oxycodone, and ***: All drugs, but digoxin, were found in dialysate samples. Drugs that are substrate of P-glycoprotein show a difference of bioavailability or brain pharmacokinetic parameters between rodents and ***: Data suggest that brain microdialysis in vigil macaque monkey, the species of choice for classic pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics studies could help predicting human brain bioavailability of a small molecule depending on the protein involved in the efflux transport from the brain.

Objective:Compare nasal endoscopy with 3 mm versus conventional 4 mm rigid 30° endoscopes for visualization,patient comfort,and examiner ***:Ten adults with no previous sinus surgery underwent bilateral nasal endoscopy with both 4 mm and 3 mm endoscopes (resulting in 20 paired nasal endoscopies).Visualization,patient discomfort and examiner’s difficulty were assessed with every ***-nasal structures were checked on a list if visualized *** rated discomfort on a standardized numerical pain scale (0-10).Examiners rated difficulty of examination on a scale of 1-5 (1 =easiest).Results:Visualization with 3 mm endoscope was superior for the sphenoid ostium (P =0.002),superior turbinate (P =0.007),spheno-ethmoid recess (P =0.006),uncinate process (P =0.002),cribdform area (P =0.007),and Valve of Hasner (P =0.002).Patient discomfort was not significantly different for 3 mm vs.4 mm endoscopes but correlated with the examiners’ assessment of difficulty (r =0.73).The examiner rated endoscopy with 4 mm endoscopes more difficult (P =0.027).Conclusions:The 3 mm endoscope was superior in visualizing the sphenoid ostium,superior turbinate,spheno-ethmoid recess,uncinate process,cribriform plate,and valve of *** therefore may be useful in assessment of spheno-ethmoid recess,nasolacrimal duct,and cribriform area ***,patients tolerated nasal endoscopy *** patient discomfort was not significantly different between the endoscopes,most discomfort with 3 mm endoscopes was noted while examining structures difficult to visualize with the 4 mm ***’ discomfort correlated with the examiner’s assessment of difficulty.

As part of our efforts to identify novel contraceptive targets in the epididymis we performed transcriptional profiling on each of the 10 and 19 segments of the mouse and rat epididymidis, respectively, using Affymetrix whole genome microarrays. A total of 17 096 and 16 360 probe sets representing transcripts were identified as being expressed in the segmented mouse and rat epididymal transcriptomes, respectively. Comparison of the expressed murine transcripts against a mouse transcriptional profiling database derived from 22 other mouse tissues identified 77 transcripts that were expressed uniquely in the epididymis. The expression of these genes was further evaluated by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR） analysis of RNA from 21 mouse tissues. RT-PCR analysis confirmed epididymis-specific expression of Defensin Beta 13 and identified two additional genes with expression restricted only to the epididymis and testis. Comparison of the 16 360 expressed transcripts in the rat epididymis with data of 21 other tissues from a rat transcriptional profiling database identified 110 transcripts specific for the epididymis. Sixty-two of these transcripts were further investigated by qPCR analysis. Only Defensin 22 （E3 epididymal protein） was shown to be completely specific for the epididymis. In addition, 14 transcripts showed more than 100-fold selective expression in the epididymis. The products of these genes might play important roles in epididymal and/or sperm function and further investigation and validation as contraceptive targets are warranted. AIM To investigate the impact of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on α2-Heremans-Schmid Glycoprotein(AHSG/fetuin A) and potential associations with disease and patient *** AHSG serum levels were determined in treatment-na?ve newly-diagnosed patients, 96 with ulcerative colitis(UC), 84 with Crohn's disease (CD), 62 with diarrheapredominant or mixed irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, D- and M- types) and 180 healthy controls (HC), by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ElISA).All patients were followed for a minimum period of 3 years at the Gastroenterology Department of the University Hospital of larissa, Greece. C-reactive protein(CRP), anti-glycan antibodies, anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae mannan antibodies Ig G, anti-mannobioside carbohydrate antibodies Ig G, anti-laminariobioside carbohydrate antibodies Ig G and anti-chitobioside carbohydrate antibodies Ig A were also determined via immunonephelometry and ElISA, *** The mean ± SE of serum AHSG, following adjustment for confounders, was 0.32 ± 0.02 g/l in IBD, 0.32 ± 0.03 g/l in CD and 0.34 ± 0.03 g/l in UC patients, significantly lower than in IBS patients(0.7 ± 0.018 g/l) and HC (0.71 ± 0.02 g/l) (P ll cases). AHSG levels were comparable between the CD and UC groups. Based on AHSG levels IBD patients could be distinguished from HC with about 90% sensitivity and specificity. Further adjusted analysis verified the inverse association between AHSG and penetrating, as well as stricturing CD (partial correlation coefficient: -0.45 and -0.33, respectively) (P lations between AHSG and CRP and the need for anti-TNFα therapy or surgery, were found (partial correlation coefficients:-0.31,-0.33,-0.41, respectively, P ll cases).
