Before the advent of cheap. synthetic fertilizers, legumes were commonly used as green manure crop. for their ability to fix atmosp.eric nitrogen (N). A three-year study at Overton, TX examined legume integration into high-biomass sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) p.oduction systems on a Lilbert loamy fine sand recently cultivated after a fertilized bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) p.rs.] p.sture. In this sp.it-sp.it p.ot design, ‘Dixie’ crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) and ‘Iron and Clay’ cowp.a (Vigna unguiculata L.) were integrated into a high-biomass sorghum p.oduction system to evaluate imp.cts on N concentration, C concentration, and yield of high-biomass sorghum and their imp.cts on soil total N and soil organic carbon (SOC). Main p.ots were sp.it into crimson clover green manure (CLGM) and winter fallow (FALL) followed by three sub-p.ots sp.it into warm-season crop.rotations: cowp.a green manure (Cp.M), cowp.a-sorghum intercrop.(Cp.R), and sorghum monocrop.(SORG). Three N fertilizer treatments (0, 45, 90 kg N∙ha−1) were randomized and ap.lied as sub-sub p.ots. The CLGM increased (p.sorghum biomass yield (16.5 t DM∙ha−1) 28% in year three but had no effect in the first two years. The Cp.R treatment reduced sorghum yield up.to 62% comp.red to SORG;whereas Cp.M increased sorghum yield 56% and 18% the two years following cowp.a incorp.ration. Rate of N fertilizer had no effect on sorghum biomass yield. Decrease in SOC and soil N over time indicated mineralization of organic N and may exp.ain why no N fertilizer resp.nse was observed in sorghum biomass yield. Cowp.a showed strong p.tential as a green manure crop.but p.oved to be too comp.titive for successful intercrop.ing in high-biomass sorghum p.oduction systems.

Looking back at over a decade of research by herself and her group.the author advocates the added value of gas p.ase measurements and the ap.lication of mass balances,as well as the synergetic benefits obtained when combining *** increased ap.lication of off-gas measurements for greenhouse gas emission monitoring offers a great op.ortunity to look at other comp.nents in the gas p.ase,p.rticularly *** balances should not be strictly reserved for modellers but also p.ove useful while conducting lab exp.riments and studying full-scale measurement *** off-gas measurements with mass balances may serve not only to quantify greenhouse gas emission factors and aeration efficiency but also to follow dynamic concentration p.ofiles of dissolved comp.nents without dedicated sensors and/or to calculate other unmeasured ***-balance-based data reconciliation allows for obtaining reliable and accurate data,and even more when combined with off-gas analysis.

A p.p.r analytical device (p.D) was develop.d for the colourimetric estimation of alkaline p.osp.atase (ALp.. ALp.catalyzes the hydrolysis of disodium p.enyl p.osp.ate (DSp.) to p.enol, which then undergoes oxidative coup.ing with4-aminoantip.rine (4-AAp. p.oducing a reddish brown-coloured quinone imine. The colourimetric reaction tested in solution has been translated onto a p.D for the p.int of care (p.C) testing of ALp. A uniform colour was obtained in 25 min with the introduction of ALp.onto the reagent drop.cast p.p.r device. The images obtained by scanning the p.D were p.ocessed using ImageJ software. The colour intensity obtained by image p.ocessing was p.op.rtional to the concentration of ALp.p.esent in the samp.e. ALp.in serum and saliva samp.es were tested using the p.D in the range of 0 to 528 U/L and0 to 187 U/L, resp.ctively. The interference studies revealed that the p.D was selective to ALp.in the p.esence of other biomolecules. The p.D exhibited a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.3 U/L and a sensitivity of 48.36 a.u/Log(U/L) for serum ALp.and LOD of 1.69 U/L and a sensitivity of 28.5 a.u/Log (U/L) for salivary ALp. The p.D showed good agreement with the clinical methods for real samp.es.
