Introduction:The Regent Honeyeater Project commenced ecological restoration in the Lurg district in 1994,with an aim to restore habitats for the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater Anthochaera phrygia and a range of other threatened and declining *** this context,our study aimed to explore whether plant reproduction can be an effective measure of ecological restoration ***:Evaluation involved comparing attributes at unrestored,restored and remnant sites to establish whether sites displayed evidence of a clear restoration *** age classes(unrestored,4–6 years old,8–10 years old,12–14 years old and remnant areas)and two landforms(upper hills and lower hills)were *** diversity of woody plant species—which have easily recognisable reproductive material and which all recruit seedlings—provides easily measured parameters that have the potential to allow the determination of early establishment success and long-term ecological development of restored ***:Restoration plantings developed in a hybrid state towards a benchmark in the lower hills;seedling species composition differed significantly among age classes,increasing in similarity with time since restoration,with some divergence from the target *** of functional groups with reproductive outputs was also significantly different among age classes;however,a restoration trajectory was only evident in the upper hills where sites converged towards the target ***:Divergence or deviation from the restoration trajectory was not deemed to be a restoration failure,as the variety of functional groups with fruits and diversity of seedlings recruiting indicated a potential increase in resilience in the future due to greater variability across the *** recruitment was effective in detecting development trends towards a restoration target in this study and therefore may be a useful measure that contributes to determining ecological

Two-Dimensional Variational Analysis of Near-Surface Moisture from Simulated Radar Refractivity-Related Phase Change Observations

Because they are most sensitive to atmospheric moisture content, radar refractivity observations can provide high-resolution information about the highly variable low-level moisture field. In this study, simulated radar refractivity-related phase-change data were created using a radar simulator from realistic highresolution model simulation data for a dryline case. These data were analyzed using the 2DVAR system developed specifically for the phase-change data. Two sets of experiments with the simulated observations were performed, one assuming a uniform target spacing of 250 m and one assuming nonuniform spacing between 250 m to 4 km. Several sources of observation error were considered, and their impacts were examined. They included errors due to ground target position uncertainty, typical random errors associated with radar measurements, and gross error due to phase wrapping. Without any additional information, the 2DVAR system was incapable of dealing with phase-wrapped data directly. When there was no phase wrapping in the data, the 2DVAR produced ex- cellent analyses, even in the presence of both position uncertainty and random radar measurement errors. When a separate pre-processing step was applied to unwrap the phase-wrapped data, quality moisture anal- yses were again obtained, although the analyses were smoother due to the reduced effective resolution of the observations by interpolation and smoothing involved in the unwrapping procedure. The unwrapping procedure was effective even when significant differences existed between the analyzed state and the state at a reference time. The results affirm the promise of using radar refractivity phase-change measurements for near-surface moisture analysis.

Overall rate, location, and predictive factors for positive surgical margins after robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy for high-risk prostate cancer

We report the overall rate, locations and predictive factors of positive surgical margins （PSMs） in 271 patients with high-risk prostate cancer. Between April 2008 and October 2011, we prospectively collected data from patients classified as D＇Amico high-risk who underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Overall rate and location of PSMs were reported. Stepwise logistic regression models were fitted to assess predictive factors of PSM. The overall rate of PSMs was 25.1% （68 of 271 patients）. Of these PSM, 38.2% （26 of 68） were posterolateral （PL）, 26.5% （18 of 68） multifocal, 16.2% （11 of 68） in the apex, 14.7% （10 of 68） in the bladder neck, and 4.4% （3/68） in other locations. The PSM rate of patients with pathological stage pT2 was 8.6% （12 of 140）, 26.6% （17 of 64） of pT3a, 53.3% （32/60） of pT3b, and 100% （7 of 7） of pT4. In a logistic regression model including pre-, intra-, and post-operative parameters, body mass index （odds ratio [OR]. 1.09; 95% confidence interval [CI]： 1.01-1.19, P = 0.029）, pathological stage （pT3b or higher vs pT2; OR： 5.14; 95% Ch 1.92-13.78; P = 0.001） and percentage of the tumor （OR： 46.71; 95% CI： 6.37-342.57; P 〈 0.001） were independent predictive factors for PSMs. The most common location of PSMs in patients at high-risk was the PL aspect, which reflects the reported tumor aggressiveness. The only significant predictive factors of PSMs were pathological outcomes, such as percentage of the tumor in the specimen and pathological stage.

Electro-optic modulation at frequencies of 100 GHz and beyond is important for photonic-electronic signal processing at the highest *** date,however,only a small number of devices exist that can operate up to this *** this study,we demonstrate that this frequency range can be addressed by nanophotonic,silicon-based *** exploit the ultrafast Pockels effect by using the silicon–organic hybrid(SOH)platform,which combines highly nonlinear organic molecules with silicon *** now,the bandwidth of these devices was limited by the losses of the radiofrequency(RF)signal and the RC(resistor-capacitor)time constant of the silicon *** RF losses are overcome by using a device as short as 500 μm,and the RC time constant is decreased by using a highly conductive electron accumulation layer and an improved gate *** this method,we demonstrate for the first time an integrated silicon modulator with a 3dB bandwidth at an operating frequency beyond 100 *** results clearly indicate that the RC time constant is not a fundamental speed limitation of SOH devices at these *** device has a voltage–length product of only V_(π)L=11 V mm,which compares favorably with the best silicon-photonic modulators available *** cladding materials with stronger nonlinearities,the voltage–length product is expected to improve by more than an order of magnitude.

Femtojoule electro-optic modulation using a silicon– organic hybrid device

Energy-efficient electro-optic modulators are at the heart of short-reach optical interconnects,and silicon photonics is considered the leading technology for realizing such ***,the performance of all-silicon devices is limited by intrinsic material *** particular,the absence of linear electro-optic effects in silicon renders the integration of energy-efficient photonic–electronic interfaces ***–organic hybrid(SOH)integration can overcome these limitations by combining nanophotonic silicon waveguides with organic cladding materials,thereby offering the prospect of designing optical properties by molecular *** this paper,we demonstrate an SOH Mach–Zehnder modulator with unprecedented efficiency:the 1-mm-long device consumes only 0.7 fJ bit^(-1) to generate a 12.5 Gbit s^(-1) data stream with a bit-error ratio below the threshold for hard-decision forward-error *** power consumption represents the lowest value demonstrated for a non-resonant Mach–Zehnder modulator in any material *** is enabled by a novel class of organic electro-optic materials that are designed for high chromophore density and enhanced molecular *** device features an electro-optic coefficient of r33<180 pm V^(-1) and can be operated at data rates of up to 40 Gbit s^(-1).
