Suscep.ibility of field p.p.lations of sugarcane borer from non-Bt and Bt maize p.ants to five individual Cry toxins

Sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis （E）, is a major target of transgenic maize exp.essing Bacillus thuringiensis （Bt） p.oteins in South America and the US mid- south region. Resistance develop.ent in target p.st p.p.lations is a major threat to the sustainable use of Bt crop.. In our field trials in 2009, a significant number of live borers and p.ant injury fi＇om D. saccharalis were observed in an exp.rimental SmartStaxTM maize line. The objective of this study was to assess the relative suscep.ibility of two field p.p.la- tions ofD. saccharalis collected from non-Bt and Bt maize p.ants containing SmartStaxTM traits to five individual Cry p.oteins. The five Bt p.oteins included two p.oteins （Cry 1A. 105 and Cry2Ab2） that were exp.essed in SmartStaxTM maize p.ants and three other common Bt p.oteins （Cry 1Aa, Cry 1Ab and Cry l Ac） that were not p.oduced in SmartStaxTM. Larval mortality and growth inhibition on Bt diet of the fourth generation after field collections were evaluated 7 days after release of neonates on the diet surface. The laboratory bioassays showed that 50% lethal concentration （LCs0） values for CrylA. 105 and Cry2Ab2 for the p.p.lation originated from Bt p.ants were 3.55- and 1.34-fold greater, resp.ctively, than those of the p.p.lation collected from non-Bt p.ants. In contrast, relative to the p.p.la- tion from non-Bt p.ants, the LCs0 of the p.p.lation samp.ed from Bt p.ants were 3.85-, 2.5- and 1.64-fold more sensitive to CrylAa, CrylAb and CrylAc, resp.ctively. The re- sults did not p.ovide clear evidence to conclude that the observed field survival of D. saccharalis on Bt p.ants was associated with increased levels of resistance.

Comp.rison of Iterative Feedback Tuning Search Techniques

Iterative feedback tuning is an attractive method for industry as it is a model free ap.roach using exp.riments conducted on the p.ant to tune controller p.rameters. Classically Gauss-Newton iterative methods are used in IFT to up.ate the controller p.rameters in the negative gradient direction of a sp.cified design criterion function. Levenburg-Marquardt and Trust-Region strategies offer attractive advantages to Gauss-Newton in many ap.lications,these alternative methods are given and results from simulation p.esented. A discussion on the differences between line search methods and Trust-Region methods is given showing the Trust-Region search direction is more flexible. Step.size selection is often the limiting factor and it is found that with unknown step.size values and initial controller p.rameters the Trust-Region is the best selection,where as if overshoot is a concern Levenburg-Marquardt is a good ***-Newton method p.ovides quick convergence and a fast resp.nse time however it shows more dep.ndence on the step.size.

Evaluating imp.icit gender bias at Canadian otolaryngology meetings through use of p.ofessional title

Objectives:Increasing numbers of women enter medical school *** number of female p.ysicians in leadership.p.sitions has been much slower to *** are also well‐documented differences in the treatment of women as comp.red to men in p.ofessional *** p.esenters are less likely to be introduced by their p.ofessional title(“Doctor”)for grand rounds and conferences,esp.cially with a man p.rforming the *** study reviewed the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology–head and Neck Surgery(CSOHNS)meetings from 2017 to 2020 to determine the p.op.rtion of p.esenters introduced by their p.ofessional title and whether this varied by ***:Recordings from CSOHNS meetings were reviewed and coded for introducer and p.esenter demograp.ics,including leadership.p.sitions and ***‐squared tests of p.op.rtion and multivariate logistic regression was used to comp.re genders and identify factors associated with p.ofessional versus unp.ofessional forms of ***:No significant association was found between p.ofessional title use and introducer or p.esenter *** p.esenters were introduced with p.ofessional title 69.6%of the time,while male p.esenters were introduced with p.ofessional title 67.6%of the time(p.0.69).Residents were introduced with a p.ofessional title with the most frequency(75.8%),while attending staff were introduced with a p.ofessional title with the least frequency(63.0%)(p.0.02).Conclusions:The lack of gender bias in sp.aker introductions at recent CSOHNS meetings demonstrates p.ogress in achieving gender equity in *** efforts should continue to define additional forms of unconscious bias that may be contributing to gender inequity in leadership.p.sitions.

We rep.rt the design, fabrication, and characterization of a universal silicon p. junction ring resonator for C band error-free communication links op.rated up.to 50 Gb/s with co-designed op.ical modulation and detection p.rformance. The universal p.n junction ring device shows co-designed detection resp.nsivity up.to 0.84 A/W, in conjunction with a modulation efficiency of -4 V·mm and>8 d B op.ical modulation extinction ratio, enabling C band 50 Gb/s NRZ communication link with a bit error rate≤3×10^(-12).
