BIFURCATION OF THE NORTH EQUATORIAL CURRENT DERIVED FROM ALTIMETRY IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN

The gridded （1/3°＊1/3°） altimetry data from October 1992 through December 2004.were analyzed to study the seasonal and interannual variabilities of the bifurcation of the North Equatorial Current （NEC） at the surface in the western North Pacific Ocean. Calculations show that on annual average the bifurcation occurs at about 13.4.N at the surface. The geostrophic flow derived from Sea Surface Height （SSH） data shows that the southernmost latitude of the NEC bifurcation at the surface is about 12.9°N in June and the northernmost latitude is about 14.1°N in December. Correlation analyses between the bifurcation latitude and the Southern Oscillation Index （SOl） suggest that the bifurcation latitude is highly correlated with the E1 Nino/Southern Oscillation （ENSO） events. During the E1 Nino years the bifurcation of the NEC takes place at higher latitudes and vice versa.

We report results of the H2CO and H110α survey toward 281 UCHII regions using the Urumqi 25m radio *** obtained 37 new H2CO detections,and H110α was simultaneously detected in eight of *** H110α was detected in another UCHII *** calculated kinematic distances of nine UCHII regions with the detected H110α and resolved the kinematic distance ambiguity for six of *** detection rate of H2CO of our observation was 13.2%,which is low compared with one of the other *** possible reason is that the sensitivity of our telescope is relatively low.

On basis of adopting polygeneration systems for power and alternative fuels,capturing CO2 with near zero energy penalties,and storing CO2 on sites,a new kind of Energy Network can integrate energy utilization,CO2 capture,transportation and storage ***-economic analysis of this solution focusing on Inner Mongolia and the Yangtze River Delta districts had been carried with comparison to the chain method for energy utilization and CO2 *** solution can save 21.5% of energy,and reduce 35% of total *** adoption of advanced polygeneration systems contributes 52.2% of the total saved costs,and the integration of energy utilization and CO2 sequestration in the Energy Network contributes 4..8%.From the aspect of CCS,the CO2 sequestration cost in the Energy Network can be as low as 12 $/t due to the lower energy penalties of capture in polygeneration systems and the combination of CO2 source and *** Energy Network exhibits attractive performance on energy saving,costs reduction for CCS,which may be a promising solution for sustainable development of china.

The moist vorticity vector (MVV), defined as (ζa×▽qv)/ρ introduced by Gao et al. is used to study a heavy rainfall event in North china. The MVV has zonal, meridional and vertical components in a three-dimensional framework. Analysis of domain-mean and mass-integrated quantities shows that the variation of the vertical component of the MVV closely follows the variation of the cloud hydrometeors, with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.95, indicating that the vertical component of the MVV is strongly associated with midlatitude convection. Further analysis shows that the vertical component of the MVV reflects the interaction between the horizontal vorticity and the horizontal specific humidity gradient, which can associate dynamic and thermodynamic processes with cloud microphysical processes. Thus, this study can help to understand how the interaction between circulations and clouds aids the development of convection, and the MVV can be used to trace the development and evolution of heavy rainfall.

Based on the Estuarine, Coastal and Ocean Modeling System with Sediments （ECOMSED） model, a 3-D hydrodynamic-transport numerical model was established for the offshore area near the Yangtze Estuary in the East china Sea .The hydrodynamic module was driven by tide and wind. Sediment module included sediment resuspension, transport and deposition of cohesive and non-cohesive sediment. The settling of cohesive sediment in the water column was modeled as a fimction of aggregation （flocculation） and deposition. The numerical results were compared with observation data for August, 2006. It shows that the sediment concentration reduces gradually from the seashore to the offshore area. Numerical results of concentration time series in the observation stations show two peaks and two valleys, according with the observation data. It is mainly affected by tidal current. The suspended sediment concentration is related to the tidal current during a tidal cycle, and the maximum concentration appears 1 h-4.h after the current maximum velocity has reached.

We sequenced partial mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA (16S rDNA) of 18 firefly species from Southwest of china. Combined with homologous sequences previously reported, phylogenetic trees including Japanese, Korean and Chinese species were reconstructed by neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony and Bayesian methods. All reconstructions agree on most nodes of the trees. Monophyly of Lampyridae is not supported because Rhagophthalmus ohbai in Rhagophthalmidae is included within it. Lamprigera, a genus placed unreliably in Lampyrinae, shows a close relationship to Amydetinae. Monophyly of Luciolinae is not supported because Pristolycus sagulatus (Lampyrinae) is included within it. In the Luciolinae, monophyly of Curtos and Hotaria is well established, respectively, but both morphological and molecular data continue to indicate that Luciola is not monophyletic and its subdivision is indeed necessary. Within the Lampyrinae, both Pyrocoelia and Diaphanes are not monophyletic, but monophyly of Pyrocoelia + Diaphanes is well supported. Phylogeny of Diaphanes is discussed for the first time. Generic placement of a newly discovered species (Diaphanes pectinealis Li et Liang) sharing some characters of Pyrocoelia and Diaphanes challenges the delimitation of these two similar genera. With references to the firefly mating systems, we suggest that more emphases should be placed on those sexually selected characters such as antennal structure in taxonomy of Lampyridae.

Using five well-replicated Qilian juniper (Sabina przewalskii Kom.) tree-ring width index se- ries, monthly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of grassland, and climatic data from 1982 to 2001, the relationships between tree-ring width index, NDVI of grassland, and climatic data were analyzed firstly. Then, the relationship between tree-ring width index and NDVI of grassland was explored. The re- sults showed that: (1) Temperature and precipitation in June influenced tree-ring width index and NDVI of grassland deeply in Delingha. (2) There were sig- nificant relationships between five tree-ring width index series (DLH1-DLH5) and monthly NDVI of grassland from June to September, with the most significant relationship being between tree-ring width index series and NDVI of grassland in August. (3) The PC1 (the first principal component derived from DLH1-DLH5 series) exhibited good agreement with monthly NDVI of grassland in the grass growth sea- son (from June to September) and the averaged NDVI in the growth season, which was attributed to their common responses to water-supply limit in Delingha. This study may allow an increase in studying the past dynamics of grassland in Delingha in that the variation of grassland NDVI during the last millennium has been reconstructed from PC1.

On the basis of data collected in the Jiaozhou Bay in June and July 2003, the DIC distribution in seawater is studied, and an average air-sea flux of CO2 is estimated. The results show that the content of DIC inside the bay is markedly higher than outside the bay in June, but the content of DIC outside the bay is markedly higher than inside the bay in July. The trend of DIC distribution inside the bay is similar, viz. the content is the maximum in the northeast, then decreases gradually toward the west, and the content is the minimum in the west. The total trend of vertical distribution is to increase gradually from surface to bottom. This characteristic of DIC distribution is determined by Jiaozhou Bay hydrology and there is a close relation between DIC and particulate N,P. Average CO2flux across the air-sea interface is 0.55 mol/(m2-a) in June and 0.72 mol/(m2-a) in July. Jiaozhou Bay is considered as a net annual source for atmospheric CO2 in June and July, and the total CO2 flux from seawater into atmosphere is about 74.t in June and 969 t in July.
