The aim of this study was to determine differences in body composition and physical fitness in elderly men and women. Five hundred twenty six subjects were included in this study, 272 were men （52%） and 254 women （48%）. To determine the trend of changes of anthropometric parameters and physical fitness in people aged over 60, the authors were divided subjects in 5 age groups： 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and over 80 years of age. Decrease in strength is observed with the aging process so that the respondents aged 60-64 years significantly differ in the strength of the lower extremities of elderly subjects 70-74 and 75-79 years of age. Also this difference is noticeable if they compare with men and women. In this study, they found that there was an increase in the amount of adipose tissue, reducing the level of muscle activity and decreased muscle strength and endurance of the aging process.

Applying micro-perforated panels in the measurement of sound source characteristics in a duct system

In order to measure the acoustic characteristics of the sound source in a duct system effectively without destroying the main duct, micro-perforated panel structures were applied in the new method by attaching the side branch tubes. The effect and influence to change the acoustical impedance of the loads in a duct system was analyzed and simulated for using one layer and double-layer micro-perforated panel and back cavities with different parameters such as panel thickness, hole diameter, perforation ration, back depth and so on. The results show that the load＇s resistance can be changed efficiently by adjusting panel thickness, hole diameter, perforation ratio, the ratio of cross-section between ducts and tubes and other parameters; and the load＇s reactance can be changed efficiently by adjusting back depth and distance between micro-perforated panel and main duct. It is also found that combinative usage of one layer and double-layer of these structures can change the reactance substantially in broad frequency domain. The method and the efficient performance of the structures with micro-perforated panel in the measurement were verified by the experiment under the situations of flow and no- flow. Finally, suggestions to design and apply these structures in the above-mentioned method in application were given.

Given the recent technological developments, ultra-sound Doppler can provide valuable measurements of arterial blood flow with high temporal resolution. In a clinical setting, measurements of hemodynamics is used to monitor, diagnose and manage changes in blood velocity profile for cardiac valve disease, relatively large vessel stenosis and other cardiovascular diseases. In health science and preventive medicine for cardiovascular disease with exercise therapy, evaluation of cardiac and vascular function is a useful indicator not only at rest but also during exercise, leading to improved exercise tolerance as well as physical activity. During exercise, the increase in oxygen uptake (calculated as product of arterial blood flow to the exercising limb and the arteriovenous oxygen difference) is directly proportional to the work performed. The increased oxygen demand is met through a central mechanism, an increase in cardiac output and blood pressure, as well as a peripheral mechanism, an increase in vascular conductance and oxygen extraction (major part in the whole exercising muscles) from the blood. Therefore, the determination of the local blood flow dynamics (potential oxygen supply) feeding to rhythmic muscle contractions can contribute to the understanding of the factors limiting the work capacity including, for instance the muscle metabolism, substance utilization and vasodilatation in the exercising muscle. Using non-invasive measures of pulsed Doppler ultrasound the validity of evaluating blood velocity/flow in the fore- arm or lower limb conduit artery feeding to the mus- cle is demonstrated during rhythmic muscle exercise;however the exercising blood velocity profile (fast Fourier transformation) due to muscle contractions is always seen as a physiological variability or fluctuations in the magnitude in blood velocity due to the spontaneous muscle contraction and relaxation induced changes in force curve intensity. Patient Experiences of Medical Screening Performed by the Dental Services:A Qualitative Study

Objective: To explore how medical screening performed by the dental service was perceived from the patient’s perspective. Material and methods: Medical screening for high blood pressure and high plasma glucose was performed on 170 patients at a dental clinic in a small town in central Sweden. Seventeen individual interviews were conducted with a strategic sampling of these patients. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The transcriptions were coded and categorized in a manifest analysis, followed by a latent, interpretive analysis. Results: The manifest analysis resulted in three categories: Positive attitude to screening and dental professionals which need to have specific knowledge of medical screening;Dental care which provides continuity but is not a neutral environment;and Feedback on the medical screening results and desired cooperation between dental and health care services. The latent analysis pointed out the importance of the patient’s feeling that the procedure is carried out properly and safely, and requests for clear feedback concerning the results of the screening. Conclusions: The interviewees experienced the dental care service as providing continuity. They would like to have regular medical screenings at their regular dental appointments to identify risks of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. However, they expressed that it was important for the dental care staff to have the necessary medical knowledge. They also wanted good cooperations between the dental and health care services, with clear feedback to the patients about both positive and negative results and, when appropriate, referrals to the health care service.

Objective: To examine the correlation between plasma hCG results obtained with the new i-STAT® hCG point of care test with those concomitantly obtained from the central hospital laboratory utilizing the same patient samples. Methods: Prospective cross-sectional laboratory test evaluation. We compared plasma hCG results obtained with the i-STAT® hCG test (Abbott Point of Care, Princeton, NJ, USA) with Architect Ci8200 (Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL, USA). We also calculated the total coefficient of variation (CV) for the i-STAT® method. Results: The two methods showed a good linear correlation (R2 = 0.994;slope 1.03) and CV for the i-STAT® method was 2.1% - 5.2%. Conclusion: We suggest that the i-STAT® hCG blood assay could be used as a complement to urine hCG assays in clinical situations when rapid test results are needed and urine is not available.

HEPATITIS B VIRUS DNA DETECTED BY PCR IN SERA AND LIVER TISSUES OF CHINESE PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC LIVER DISEASES

To investigate the HBV infection and its replication in Chinese patients with chronic liver disease, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed to detect hepatitis B virus DNA in sera of 410 patients with chronic liver disease and liver samples from 188 patients. The HBV DNA detectability in all serum samples was 58%. Among them 100% HBeAg-positive and 58% anti-HBe cases were HBV DNA detectable respectively. However, HBV DNA was also found in 23% HBsAg-negative/anti-HBc postitive chronic cases. Furthermore, 30% anti-HBs positive chronic cases who had neutralizing antibody against HBV infection, continued to contain HBV DNA. Our findings indicate that HBV infection and its replication are dominant cause of chronic liver disease and some HBV variants may escape from the protective antibody to induce chronic liver disease, even anti-HBs antibody circulated.
