Preduodenal Portal Vein (PDPV): A Very Rare Cause of Duodenum obstruction

Congenital duodenal obstruction (CDo) is one of the most common anomalies presented in the neonatal period of intestinal obstruction, with an incidence of 1:10,000, and Preduodenal Portal Vein (PDPV) is a rare extrinsic cause of CDo. PDPV leads to CDo with a persistent vomiting, impairment of the oral feeding and weight loss, but other publications state an asymptomatic disease that may requires late surgical correction. Prenatal diagnosis of CDo, including PDPV, is evidenced by association of polyhydramnios with a dilated fluid-filled gastric and duodenum and a double-bobble image in the ultrasonography and permits a proper management of associated malformation, delivery, surgery and allows family counseling. PDPV is commonly associated to other intestinal obstruction such as extrinsic (annular pancreas, adhesive bands, malrotation, peritoneal bands, intestinal duplication), and intrinsic (atresia, web and stenosis), and also associated with cardiovascular anomalies, situs inversus, Down’s syndrome and polysplenia. This is full term 5 days old newborn, 2865 g girl, without prenatal diagnosis of CDo. It was not still established PDPV until surgery procedure such as Duodenoduodenostomy (Diamond-Shape) and can guide Paediatric Surgeons that face high intestinal obstruction in the neonate with or without prenatal diagnosis. In the ambulatory follow up after 4 months, baby has developed very well, in breast-feeding associated with formula-feeding with a normal weight gain (average of 550 g/month).

Base Excision Repair Inhibition by Methoxyamine Impairs Growth and Sensitizes osteosarcoma Cells to Conventional Treatments

The outcome of patients with osteosarcoma has not significantly improved in the last three decades. Therefore, there is still a need for the development of more effective therapeutic strategies. Methoxyamine (MX) is a base excision repair (BER) inhibitor that has shown anticancer potential by sensitizing a variety of tumor cells to ionizing radiation and chemotherapeutic drugs. In the present study, the in vitro antiproliferative effects of MX were evaluated in two osteosarcoma cell lines, HoS and MG-63. Evaluation of the influence on radiosensitivity and drug interactions in simultaneous treatments with methotrexate, doxorubicin, and cisplatin was also performed. Exposure to MX significantly decreased cell proliferation and mediated a substantial increase of apoptosis. Moreover, our results showed that MX synergized with ionizing radiation in both cell lines while potentiated the antitumor effects of cisplatin and methotrexate. Altogether, the results presented herein demonstrate the feasibility of inhibiting the BER pathway, which may in future be a promising strategy for overcoming intrinsic tumor resistance and to improve the outcome of patients with osteosarcoma.

关于热带雨林(对火敏感)和开放地层(耐火)之间边界所涉及过程的认识对于保护生物多样性和生态系统服务至关重要,尤其是在气候变化和人为压力增加的情况下。本文调查了位于巴西东南部的Espinhaco生物圈保护区内的森林岛屿和湿润草原同时出现的主要环境因素。我们使用Costa(2018)布置的永久样地来收集森林岛屿的土壤变量(水分和化学性质)。对于湿润草原的采样,我们从岛屿边缘沿不同方向设置了4条30m的线。随后,我们在每条线上划了3个点,每个点相距10m,每个区域共12个点。我们还调查了处理火烧前后的植被覆盖情况,并对环境变量进行均值检验和主成分分析。研究结果显示,森林岛屿土壤中钾、盐基总量、阳离子交换容量和有机质的值均高于湿润草地。因此,两种植被类型之间的边界定义似乎主要与土壤肥力和水分梯度有关。在对这些地区进行火烧处理后,在岛屿边缘附近没有发现树木个体的再生。因此,这些研究结果表明,由于明确的土壤气候条件,森林岛屿无法扩张。因此,这些环境应该成为设计公共保护政策的目标焦点,因为它们增加了山地岩石草原植被景观的复杂性。

Squamous Inclusion Cyst in the Palatine Tonsil Mimicking a Tumor

Squamous inclusion cyst is a rare benign cystic lesion most commonly affecting the floor of mouth in the oral cavity. Its presence in the palatine tonsil of the oropharynx is an extremely rare occurrence. We highlight a case of an elderly female who was histopathologically diagnosed as squamous inclusion cyst of the palatine tonsil. We shall discuss the presentation, diagnosis, management and postoperative follow-up of the case.

Combined Selection in Backcross Population of Papaya(Carica papaya L.)by the Mixed Model Methodology

The selection of superior genotypes based on the simultaneous response to several characteristics of agronomic importance is a key strategy to overcome the scarcity of available varieties of papaya. This study aimed to apply the combined selection by using distinct selection indexes based on both the genetic values obtained by the REML/BLUP methodology and the real measured values to select agronomically superior genotypes of papaya within backcross progenies. The combined selection was carried out based on genetic and phenotypic values, original and standardized, multiplied by the agronomic weights. The results of the analysis of genetic parameters indicate that the evaluated progenies have expressive genetic variability for the considered traits, and that there are real possibilities of genetic progress with the selection. Among the analyzed indexes, the one based on standardized genetic value presented greater consistency in the ranking of genetic material, demonstrating the advantage of data standardization. Five progenies belonging to the BC1 generation, and five to the BC3 generation were selected using this index. A total of 27 plants ag-ronomically superior were selected within the top five progenies and recommended for generation advance, 23 being selected by combined selection and 4 using the direct selection for the four mainly characters in papaya breeding program: production, pulp and fruit firmness and soluble solids. Beyond the selection of superior genotypes for the development of future inbred lines, this study also allowed defining the best strategy to apply the combined selection in papaya using pre-dicted breeding values obtained by BLUP. This strategy may allow higher accuracy in the selection process, thus increasing the chances of success of the breeding programs.

Background: Bladder hernias are infrequent and should be treated by the urologist, or an experienced surgeon. An inguinoscrotal hernia of the bladder should be suspected in male patients with voiding symptoms and a fluctuant mass in the scrotum that changes its volume during urination. The most common characteristics found on the series were patients with advanced age, sedentary, and overweight. Case Presentation: We present a case series of 4 patients with inguinoscrotal herniation of the bladder, the surgical management, and outcome. Conclusion: The surgical technique used was inguinal plasty with Lichtenstein technique and either laparoscopic or open surgery mesh-plug placement. None had surgical complications, and none had recurrence at their follow-up.

Recognizing Brazilian Cerrado Enclaves by Modeling Geoenvironmental Parameters

This work focused on the prediction modeling of Cerrado occurrences in the Atlantic Rainforest predominance in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR), the fourth largest urban area, in the city of Guarulhos, southeastern Brazil. The methodology was based on the selection of records of occurrence of Cerrado in georeferenced databases, thematic maps of geoenvironmental layers, and modeling of the distribution of species through the MaxEnt tool. Besides that, field research confirmed the presence or not of the species in the areas with a high probability of occurrence of Cerrado (≥0.7). As a result, the model observed a great capacity for the prediction of the occurrence of Cerrado in Ecotonal and anthropic regions (AUC = 0.82), revealing important hotspots such as relics from the past or Cerrado enclaves of high biodiversity. The work also points priority areas for the conservation and preservation of this increasingly endangered biome.

Metastasis of Mammary Carcinoma in Bitches: Evaluation of the Sentinel Lymph Node Technique

In recent years the development of extremely accurate techniques for the removal of lymph nodes has been seen, such as the Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) technique. The technique is based on the staggered progression occurring in the lymphatic drainage of neoplasias, and is currently the main prognostic and diagnostic factor in women suffering from mammary carcinoma. This research aims at assessing the sentinel lymph node biopsy accuracy in female dogs suffering from mammary carcinoma. Forty-one dogs with cytological diagnosis of the tumor were used in the research. After injecting a Patent Blue V dye, mastectomy was conducted jointly with lymphadenectomy (for both sentinel and non-sentinel lymph nodes). The material was then serially sectioned and microscopically evaluated by routine H&E stain and immunohistochemical study with the markers for pancytokeratin AE1/AE3 and myoepithelial cells CK14. The study revealed that 46.3% (19/41) of the animals presented nodal metastasis. The sensitivity and specificity values found for SLNB were respectively 89.5% and 100%, with a kappa coefficient of 0.90 and p ore, the SLNB technique offers high sensitivity in the early detection of metastases, allowing higher precision in the staging of oncological patients and, therefore, offering higher chances of survival.
