BACKGrOUND Type 1 diabetes(T1D)is a complex disease with a higher incidence in Europeans than other *** Colombians Living in medellin(CLm)is admixed with ancestry contributions from Europeans,Native Americans(NAT)and Africans(AFr).AIm Our aim was to analyze the genetic admixture component at candidate T1D loci in Colombian individuals with the *** Seventy-four ancestry informative markers(AIms),which tagged 41 T1D candidate loci/genes,were tested by studying a cohort of 200 Northwest Colombia diseased individuals.T1D status was classified by testing for glutamic acid decarboxylase(GAD-65 kDa)and protein tyrosine-like antigen-2 autoantibodies in serum *** loci/genes included HLA,INS,PTPN22,CTLA4,IL2rA,SUmO4,CLEC16A,IFIH1,EFr3B,IL7r,NrP1 and rNASEH1,amongst *** 1,000 genome database was used to analyze data from 94 individuals corresponding to the reference *** the data did not comply with a normal distribution,medians were compared between groups using the mann-Whitney *** Both T1D patients and individuals from CLm displayed mainly European ancestry(61.58 vs 62.06)followed by Native American(27.34 vs 27.46)and to a lesser extent the AFr ancestry(10.28 vs 10.65)***,compared to CLm,ancestry of T1D patients displayed a decrease of NAT ancestry at gene EFr3B(24.30 vs 37.10)and an increase at genes IFIH1(32.07 vs 14.99)and IL7r(52.18 vs 39.18).Also,for gene NrP1(36.67 vs 0.003),we observed a non-AFr contribution(attributed to NAT).Autoimmune patients(positive for any of two auto-antibodies)displayed lower NAT ancestry than idiopathic patients at the mHC region(20.36 vs 31.88).Also,late onset patients presented with greater AFr ancestry than early onset patients at gene IL7r(19.96 vs 6.17).An association analysis showed that,even after adjusting for admixture,an association exists for at least seven such AIms,with the strongest findings on chromosomes 5 and 10(gene IL7r,P=5.56×10-6 and gene NrP1,P=8.

Physical rehabilitation is an effective therapy to normalize weaknesses encountered with neurological disorders such as traumatic brain injury(TBI).However,the efficacy of exercise is limited during the acute period of TBI because of metabolic dysfunction,and this may further compromise neuronal *** we discuss the possibility to normalize brain metabolism during the early post-injury convalescence period to support functional plasticity and prevent long-term functional *** BDNF possesses the unique ability to support molecular events involved with the transmission of information across nerve cells through activation of its TrkB receptor,the poor pharmacokinetic profile of BDNF has limited its therapeutic *** flavonoid derivative,7,8-dihydroxyflavone(7,8-DHF),signals through the same TrkB receptors and results in the activation of BDNF signaling *** discuss how the pharmacokinetic limitations of BDNF may be avoided by the use of 7,8-DHF,which makes it a promising pharmacological agent for supporting activity-based rehabilitation during the acute post-injury period after *** turn,docosahexaenoic acid(C22:6n-3;DHA)is abundant in the phospholipid composition of plasma membranes in the brain and its action is important for brain development and *** is a major modulator of synaptic membrane fluidity and function,which is fundamental for supporting cell signaling and synaptic *** influences DHA function by normalizing DHA content in the brain,such that the collaborative action of exercise and DHA can be instrumental to boost BDNF function with strong therapeutic potential for reducing the deleterious effects of TBI on synaptic plasticity and cognition.

Phasor measurement units(PmUs)are fundamental tools in the applications of modern power systems,where synchronized phasor estimations are *** accuracy and dynamic performance requirements for phasor,frequency,and rate of change of frequency(rOCOF)estimations are established in the IEEE Std.C37.118.1-2011 along with the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 a-2014,where two PmU performances are suggested:P class filters for applications requiring fast response and m class filters for applications requiring high rejection to aliased *** this paper,a methodology to design new phasor estimators that satisfy the P class and m class requirements in PmUs is *** proposed methodology is based on finite impulse response filters,brick-wall filters,and complex filter design concepts,where frequency range,time performance,harmonic rejection and out-of-band interference requirements are considered in its design.A comparative analysis using the reference model given by the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 is *** results show the effectiveness of the phasor estimators under steady-state and dynamic conditions according to the PmU standard,making them suitable tools for applications in power systems.

relieving network congestions is a critical goal for the safe and flexible operation of modern power systems, especially in the presence of intermittent renewables or distributed generation. This paper deals with the real-time coordinated operation of distributed static series compensators(DSSCs) to remove network congestions by suitable modifications of the branch reactance. Several objective functions are considered and discussed to minimize the number of the devices involved in the control actions, the total losses or the total reactive power exchanged, leading to a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. Then, a heuristic methodology combining the solution of a regular NLP with k-means clustering algorithm is proposed to get rid of the binary variables, in an attempt to reduce the computational cost. The proposed coordinated operation strategy of the DSSCs is tested on several benchmark systems, providing feasible and sufficiently optimal solutions in a reasonable time frame for practical systems.

Background:Excitotoxicity is a mechanism of foremost importance in the selective motor neuron degeneration characteristic of motor neuron *** therapeutic strategies are an unmet need for these ***,such as quercetin and resveratrol,are plant-derived compounds that activate sirtuins(SIrTs)and have shown promising results in some models of neuronal death,although their effects have been scarcely tested in models of motor neuron ***:In this work we investigated the effects of quercetin and resveratrol in an in vivo model of excitotoxic motor neuron death induced by the chronic infusion ofα-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid(AmPA)into the rat spinal cord *** and resveratrol were co-infused with AmPA and motor behavior and muscle strength were assessed daily for up to ten ***,animals were fixed and lumbar spinal cord tissue was analyzed by histological and immunocytological ***:We found that the chronic infusion of AmPA[1 mm]caused a progressive motor neuron degeneration,accompanied by astrogliosis and microgliosis,and motor deficits and paralysis of the rear *** infusion ameliorated AmPA-induced paralysis,rescued motor neurons,and prevented both astrogliosis and microgliosis,and these protective effects were prevented by EX527,a very selective SIrT1 *** contrast,neither resveratrol nor EX527 alone improved motor behavior deficits or reduced motor neuron degeneration,albeit both reduced ***:These results suggest that quercetin exerts its beneficial effects through a SIrT1-mediated mechanism,and thus SIrT1 plays an important role in excitotoxic neurodegeneration and therefore its pharmacological modulation might provide opportunities for therapy in motor neuron disorders.

measurement of Anomalous radon Gas Emanation Across the Yammouneh Fault in Southern Lebanon: A Possible Approach to Earthquake Prediction

The eastern mediterranean region is an active tectonic setting that includes the Dead Sea Transform Fault, which forms the boundary between the African and the Arabian Plates and crosses Lebanon from south to north, striking in a restraining bend around 25–30°NE. The major structural feature in Lebanon is the Yammouneh Fault, which reaches to Syria and southern Turkey in a north–south direction. measurements of radon gas concentration and exhalation rates in two locations along the southern segment of the Yammouneh Fault in south Lebanon were performed. Two profiles in the El-Khiam basin and Blat pull-apart basin and perpendicular to the Yammouneh Fault trace were analyzed. An approximate fault width 25–30 m wide was determined in the El-Khiam study area. Temporal increase of radon concentration was measured and correlated with stress/strain tectonic activity and stress drops along the studied fault segment *** variable radon concentrations were detected during one of the measurements where an earthquake occurred in the region of Tiberias Lake in northern Palestine along the Yammouneh Fault in the study area. measurements of radon concentration along a station’s profile in Blat village did not show any radon anomalous variation due to the discontinuity along the fault(pull-apart), and possible absence of stress and energy accumulation along the Yammouneh Fault line in that location.

The non-thermal plasma technology is a promising technique to treat SO2 and NOx. Chemical radicals produced with this technology can remove several pollutants at atmospheric pressure in a very short period of time simultaneously. Both theoretical and experimental study on SO2 and NOx removal, by a dielectric barrier discharge （DBD） with corona effect, is presented.
