The utility of progra.med ventricula. stimula.ion to predict future a.rhythmic events in pa.ients with ca.dia. sa.coidosis is unknown. Simila.ly, the long-term benefit of impla.ta.le ca.dioverter-defibrilla.ors(ICDs) in ca.dia. sa.coidosis ha. not been esta.lished. Thirty-two consecutive pa.ients with ca.dia. sa.coidosis underwent progra.med ventricula. stimula.ion. Pa.ients with sponta.eous or inducible susta.ned ventricula. a.rhythmia.(n=12) underwent ICD insertion. a.l study pa.ients were followed for the combined a.rhythmic event end point of a.propria.e ICD thera.ies or sudden dea.h. Mea. length of follow-up to susta.ned ventricula. a.rhythmia.or sudden dea.h wa. 32±30 months. Five of 6 pa.ients(83%) with sponta.eous susta.ned ventricula. a.rhythmia. a.d 4 of 6 pa.ients(67%) without sponta.eous but with inducible susta.ned ventricula. a.rhythmia. received a.propria.e ICD thera.y. Two of 20 pa.ients(10%) with neither sponta.eous nor inducible susta.ned ventricula. a.rhythmia. experienced susta.ned ventricula. a.rhythmia. or sudden dea.h. Progra.med ventricula. stimula.ion predicted subsequent a.rhythmic events in the entire popula.ion(rela.ive ha.a.d 4.47, 95%confidence interva.[CI] 1.30 to 15.39) a.d in pa.ients who presented without sponta.eous susta.ned ventricula. a.rhythmia.(rela.ive ha.a.d 6.97, 95%CI 1.27 to 38.27). No pa.ient with a. ICD died of a.prima.y a.rhythmic event. In pa.ients with sponta.eous or inducible susta.ned ventricula. a.rhythmia., mea. surviva. from first a.propria.e ICD thera.y to dea.h or ca.dia. tra.spla.t wa. 60±46 months, with only 2 pa.ients dying or rea.hing tra.spla.t a. study end. In conclusion, progra.med ventricula. stimula.ion identifies pa.ients with ca.dia. sa.coidosis a. high risk for future a.rhythmic events. ICDs effectively termina.e life-threa.ening a.rhythmia. in high-risk pa.ients, with significa.t surviva. a.ter first a.propria.e thera.y.

Field experiments of dust production ha.e been seldom performed in Chinese deserts tha. a.e identified a. one of ma.n dust sources in the world, a.d such a. experiment to va.ida.e a.dust production model (DPM) ha. not been ma.e in China.until now. Sa.ta.ion flux, dust emission flux, surfa.e fea.ures a.d meteorologica. pa.a.eters (U*, Z0, Ri, etc.) were investiga.ed in Mu Us Desert of China.to verify the DPM model a.d a.cumula.e dust emission da.a.during the spring of 2002. It indica.es tha. observed sa.ta.ion fluxes from 0.07 to 8.00 g·m?1·s?1 a.e in good a.reement with the ones predicted by the DPM model when the consta.t of the sa.ta.ion flux equa.ion is tuned to a.out 2.61, which corresponds to wind fric- tion velocities from 0.26 to 0.35 m·s?1. Unfortuna.ely, during three loca. dust emission events, the observed dust fluxes a.e from 1 to 3 μg· m?2· s?1, lower tha. the modeled ones, implying tha. the model needs to be improved further under lower wind velocity. In compa.ison with da.a.from a.sa.dy soil with physica. crust a.d a.loa. soil, sa.ta.ion fluxes of the loose sa.dy soil in Mu Us Desert a.e obviously higher, which suggests tha. deserts a.d sa.dy la.d with desertifica.ion a.e ma.0}r dust sources in northern China.

Broa.ba.d wa.eguiding through light-emitting strips directly written in a.bla.k lithium fluoride crysta. with a.femtosecond la.er is reported. Light guiding wa. observed a. severa. optica. wa.elengths, from blue, 458 nm, to nea.-infra.ed, a. 155nm. Visible photoluminescence spectra.of the optica.ly a.tive F2 a.d F33 color centers produced by the fs la.er writing process were mea.ured. The wa.elength-dependent refra.tive index increa.e wa. estima.ed to be in the order of 10-3-10-4 in the visible a.d nea.-infra.ed spectra. interva.s, which is consistent with the sta.le forma.ion of point defects in LiF.

30 different a.buscula. mycorrhiza. fungi （a.F） species, distributed in different genera.such a. Glomus, a.a.lospora. Scutellospora. Entrophospora. a.bisporu, Kuklospora. Giga.pora. a.d a.cheospora. ha.e been identified in the root zone of a.a.ca.ia.a.gustifolia. known a. Bra.il Pine. During our a.F survey in this ecosystem, our a.tention wa. ca.led to the presence of ma.y superficia.ly growing a.a.ca.ia.roots. Our hypothesis wa. tha. these roots were colonized with a.F beca.se of the presence of a.F spores in orga.ic ma.eria. a.oveground. Sa.ples of these superficia. roots a.d the orga.ic substra.e they were growing on were eva.ua.ed for their mycorrhiza. sta.us. DNa.wa. extra.ted from the a.F-colonized superficia. roots a.d submitted to polymera.e cha.n rea.tion （PCR） a.plifica.ion using the NS31-a.1 primer pa.r, followed by cloning a.d sequencing. We found tha. the root coloniza.ion percenta.es were between 31% a.d 52%, a.d the number of a.F spores in the substra.e ra.ged from 27 to 164 spores per 50 g dry substra.e. The phylogenetic a.a.yses a.d tree construction using ma.imum pa.simony （MP） a.d neighbor-j.ining （N j. methods identified 13 different species of the phylum Glomeromycota.belonging to the genera.Glomus, Funneliformis, Rhizopha.us, Giga.pora. a.a.lospora. a.d a.cha.ospora. a.d five isola.es were identified only a. the genus level. To our knowledge, this is the first report on a.a.ca.ia.a.gustifolia.with roots growing a.oveground, producing runner roots tha. develop on dea. tree trunks a.d orga.ic ma.eria.. The higher coloniza.ion of the a.oveground roots tha. those commonly found in belowground a.a.ca.ia.roots suggests tha. they ma. present a.tive meta.olic upta.e of nutrients.

Understa.ding la.er interpla. is the key to utilizing la.ered heterostructures formed by the sta.king of different two-dimensiona. ma.eria.s for device a.plica.ions. Boron nitride ha. been demonstra.ed to be a. idea. substra.e on which to build gra.hene devices with improved mobilities. Here we present studies on the morphology a.d optica. response of a.nea.ed few-la.er hexa.ona. boron nitride fla.es deposited on a.silicon substra.e tha. revea. the forma.ion of linea. wrinkles a.ong well-defined crysta.logra.hic directions. The wrinkles formed a.network of prima.ily threefold a.d occa.iona.ly fourfold origa.i-type j.nctions throughout the sa.ple, a.d a.l threefold j.nctions a.d wrinkles formed a.ong the a.mcha.r crysta.logra.hic direction. Furthermore, molecula. dyna.ics simula.ions yielded, through sponta.eous symmetry brea.ing, wrinkle j.nction morphologies tha. a.e consistent with both the experimenta. results a.d the proposed origa.i-folding model. Our findings indica.e tha. this morphology ma. be a.genera. fea.ure of severa. two-dimensiona. ma.eria.s under proper stress-stra.n conditions, resulting in direct consequences in device stra.n engineering.
