Non-crossing Quantile Regression Neural Network as a Calibration Tool for Ensemble Weather Forecasts

Background:The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic on patient decision making remains *** study aimed to investigate the effect of the pandemic on treatment preferences of patients with proximal ureteral stones.Materials and methods:Retrospective data regarding treatment preferences of patients diagnosed with symptomatic proximal ure-teral stones between July 2018 and November 2021 at a single center were *** from 493 patients were analyzed according to 2 groups,including patients diagnosed during the COVID-19 pandemic and those diagnosed during an equivalent period of time be-fore the pandemic.Results:Preference for conservative treatment increased during the COVID-19 pandemic(p=0.009).In patients who had previously undergone shock wave lithotripsy(SWL),the preference for SWL decreased and the preference for conservative treatment increased during the COVID-19 pandemic(p=0.042).Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between a preference for conservative treatment during the pandemic and no prior spontaneous stone passage(p=0.003;odds ratio[OR],2.48;95％con-fidence interval[CI],1.45-4.23),no hydronephrosis(p=0.035;OR,3.57;95％Cl,1.34-9.49),and a visual analog scale score of 4 or less(p=0.018;OR,1.97;95％Cl,1.15-3.38).Conclusions:A significant increase in the preference for conservative treatment was observed among patients diagnosed during the pandemic,and patients with a history of SWL demonstrated a preference shift from SWL to conservative treatment.

Despite the maturity of ensemble numerical weather prediction(NWP),the resulting forecasts are still,more often than not,*** such,forecast calibration tools have become *** those tools,quantile regression(QR)is highly competitive in terms of both flexibility and predictive ***,a long-standing problem of QR is quantile crossing,which greatly limits the interpretability of QR-calibrated *** this point,this study proposes a non-crossing quantile regression neural network(NCQRNN),for calibrating ensemble NWP forecasts into a set of reliable quantile forecasts without *** overarching design principle of NCQRNN is to add on top of the conventional QRNN structure another hidden layer,which imposes a non-decreasing mapping between the combined output from nodes of the last hidden layer to the nodes of the output layer,through a triangular weight matrix with positive *** empirical part of the work considers a solar irradiance case study,in which four years of ensemble irradiance forecasts at seven locations,issued by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts,are calibrated via NCQRNN,as well as via an eclectic mix of benchmarking models,ranging from the naïve climatology to the state-of-the-art deep-learning and other non-crossing *** and stringent forecast verification suggests that the forecasts post-processed via NCQRNN attain the maximum sharpness subject to calibration,amongst all ***,the proposed conception to resolve quantile crossing is remarkably simple yet general,and thus has broad applicability as it can be integrated with many shallow-and deep-learning-based neural networks.

Performance of recycling abrasives in rock cutting by abrasive water jet

Rock cutting performance of recycling abrasives was investigated in terms of cutting depth, kerf width, kerf taper angle and surface roughness. Gravity separation technique was employed to separate the abrasives and the rock particles. The recycling abrasive particles were then dried and sieved for determination of their disintegration behaviors. Before each cutting with recycling abrasives, the abrasive particles less than 106 ?m were screened out. It is revealed that a considerable amount of used abrasives can be effectively reused in the rock cutting. The reusabilities of abrasives are determined as 81.77%, 57.50%, 34.37% and 17.72% after the first, second, third and fourth cuttings, respectively. Additionally, it is determined that recycling must be restricted three times due to the excessive disintegration of abrasives with further recycling. Moreover, it is concluded that cutting depth, kerf width and surface roughness decreases with recycling. No clear trend is found between the kerf taper angle and recycling. Particle size distribution is determined as an important parameter for improving the cutting performance of recycling abrasives.

Hepatopulmonary syndrome(HPS)is characterized as a triad:liver disease,intrapulmonary vascular dilatation and arterial *** is reported to be present in 4%to 32%of adult patients with end-stage liver disease and in 9%-20%of *** pathogenesis of HPS has not been clearly *** hypertension causes impairment in the perfusion of the bowel and increases the enteral translocation of Gram(-)bacteria and *** stimulates the release of vasoactive mediators,such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha,heme oxygenase-derived carbon monoxide and nitric *** alterations have not been associated with this syndrome yet;however,cytokines and chemokines have been suggested to play a ***,it was reported that cumulated monocytes lead to the activation of vascular endothelial growth factor-dependent signaling pathways and pulmonary angiogenesis,which plays an important role in HPS *** present,the most effective and only radical treatment is a liver transplant(LT).Cirrhotic patients who are on the waiting list for an LT have a shorter survival period if they develop ***,it is suggested that all cirrhotic cases should be followed closely for HPS and they should have priority in the waiting list.

It is critical to ensure the functionality of highway bridges after earthquakes to provide access to important facilities. Since the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, there has been a better understanding of the seismic performance of bridges. Nonetheless, there are no detailed guidelines addressing the performance of skewed highway bridges. Several parameters affect the response of skewed highway bridges under both service and seismic loads which makes their behavior complex. Therefore, there is a need for more research to study the effect of skew angle and other related factors on the performance of highway bridges. This paper examines the seismic performance of a three-span continuous concrete box girder bridge with skew angles from 0 to 60 degrees, analytically. Finite element （FE） and simplified beam-stick （BS） models of the bridge were developed using SAP2000. Different types of analysis were considered on both models such as： nonlinear static pushover, and linear and nonlinear time history analyses. A comparison was conducted between FE and BS, different skew angles, abutment support conditions, and time history and pushover analysis. It is shown that the BS model has the capability to capture the coupling due to skew and the significant modes for moderate skew angles. Boundary conditions and pushover load profile are determined to have a major effect on pushover analysis. Pushover analysis may be used to predict the maximum deformation and hinge formation adequately.

The hydrodynamics and locomotion mechanism of Euglena Gracilis(***)is investigated using microscopic shadow imaging and micro particle image velocimetry(MicroPIV).Three distinct locomotion modes were observed:translation,spin,and left/right *** the flagellum was not possible to image,the strokes were identified by evaluating the flow field around the *** flow field information is obtained using a phase-separated PIV evaluation,which uses a histogram-thresholding based dynamic masking *** temporal resolution of the experiment was sufficient to identify the sequence of two modes,translation and spin,and the stroke-pulling *** flow field result during a stroke is compared with existing Stokeslet dipole theories and flow disturbance decay with distance is *** results indicate that the organism has a complex locomotion technique that allows the change of direction,axial orientation and propulsion.

This paper introduces biogas potential of animal waste in Bursa,an important agricultural,industrial and tourism centre in northwest *** research has focused on Bursa’s biogas potential from animal *** potential quantity of electric energy,the potential amount of biogas as well as potential bio-electric energy per capita to be obtained from animal wastes were *** the evaluation of biogas potential is conducted thoroughly,1.12% of the electricity consumption of Bursa can be met with the conversion of biogas from animal wastes into *** study also revealed that the power for 95% of street lighting,approximately twofold of the electricity consumed in official apartments and all of the agricultural irrigation operations can be provided with electrical energy obtained from biogas obtained from animal wastes in *** addition,the research efficiency was improved by creating thematic maps in GIS,which enabled differences in data among the districts to be observed more clearly.

PMMA matrices were doped with nano-crystalline neodymium oxides synthesized by thermal decomposition process. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements were carried out to investigate the structure, phase, and the morphology of the Nd_2O_3 nanocrystals and those embedded in the PMMA matrix. The average grain sizes were estimated 35 ± 6 nm and 46 ± 4 nm for non-annealed and annealed Nd_2O_3 particles, respectively. The grain size distributions（GSD） were calculated from the diffraction peaks of the annealed and non-annealed Nd_2O_3 powders and doped PMMA samples. The mass density, refractive index. UV-Visible absorption spectra were measured and the data were analyzed using the Judd-Ofelt approach to determine the oscillator strengths, the spontaneous emission probabilities and the branching ratios as a function of the nano-crystalline Nd_2O_3 content in the range of 0.1 wt.%-20 wt.% of MMA. Luminescence spectra upon 808 nm diode laser excitation were carried out in the wavelength range of 850-1550 nm at room temperature. The photoluminescence study has shown that the reasonably sharp emission peaks were observed upon heat treatment at 800 ℃ for 24 h for all concentrations of Nd_2O_3 nanopowders in PMMA. The infrared laser transition of Nd^（3＋） ions at about 1.06 μm due to the ~4F_（3/2）→~4I_（11/2） transition was analyzed and discussed in Nd_2O_3 system for their possible applications in the photonic technology.
