In the coa.ta. cities of West a.rica. la.d use cha.ge, ra.id popula.ion growth, ba. sa.ita.ion systems a.d poor environmenta. governa.ce degra.e the qua.ity of groundwa.er. This study a.med to a.sess a.terna.ive, a.cepta.le, a.forda.le sa.ita.ion disposa. a.d pra.tices for groundwa.er qua.ity reha.ilita.ion in the cities of Cotonou a.d Lomé. The study wa. ba.ed on the pa.ticipa.ory tra.sdisciplina.y a.proa.h, field surveys, feedba.k from intera.tions with sta.eholders, experiences of the pra.titioners a.d institutiona. consulta.ions. This multi-sta.eholder a.proa.h helped to a.precia.e ecologica. a.pects of sa.ita.ion disposa. a.d its implica.ions on wa.er qua.ity improvement. SWOT model wa. used to a.a.yze the releva.ce of a.sessed ecologica. system. Well wa.er qua.ity is deteriora.ed by tra.itiona. wa.te ma.a.ement disposa.. Ecologica. sa.ita.ion systems a.e septic ta.ks on polyethylene, a.ove-ground la.rines a.d phytoremedia.ion technique in the swa.p a.ea.. Collected wa.tes a.e used for composting a.d bioga. production. Ba.ed on the optimist scena.io a. 2030 horizon, kind success fa.tors of groundwa.er security a.e pa.ticipa.ion of citizens, existence of sa.ita.ion ma.ket, va.oriza.ion of the wa.te by ca.egory, low-cost disposa. a.a.ta.le to the individua., household a.d neighborhood’s sca.es. The stra.egic directions rely on funding a.d public policies for Wa.H, ecologica. sa.ita.ion disposa., cultura. environment a.d good sa.ita.ion pra.tices for emergence of new sa.ita.ion system to secure a.d susta.n well wa.er qua.ity. But the socia. a.cepta.ility of ecologica. disposa. is limited by the society’s multicultura. herita.e. These findings could help in decision-ma.ing concerning urba. groundwa.er qua.ity protection in the a.rica. coa.ta. cities.
