coral sandy soils widely exist in coral island reefs and seashores in tropical and subtropical *** to the unique marine depositional environment of coral sandy soils,the engineering characteristics and responses of these soils subjected to monotonic and cyclic loadings have been a subject of intense interest among the geotechnical and earthquake engineering *** paper critically reviews the progress of experimental investigations on the undrained behavior of coral sandy soils under monotonic and cyclic loadings over the last three *** focus of coverage includes the contractive-dilative behavior,the pattern of excess pore-water pressure(EPWP)generation and the liquefaction mechanism and liquefaction resistance,the small-strain shear modulus and strain-dependent shear modulus and damping,the cyclic softening feature,and the anisotropic characteristics of undrained responses of saturated coral sandy *** particular,the advances made in the past decades are reviewed from the following aspects:(1)the characterization of factors that impact the mechanism and patterns of EPWP build-up;(2)the identification of liquefaction triggering in terms of the apparent viscosity and the average flow coefficient;(3)the establishment of the invariable form of strain-based,stress-based,or energy-based EPWP ratio formulas and the unique relationship between the new proxy of liquefaction resistance and the number of cycles required to reach liquefaction;(4)the establishment of the invariable form of the predictive formulas of small strain modulus and strain-dependent shear modulus;and(5)the investigation on the effects of stress-induced anisotropy on liquefaction susceptibility and dynamic deformation *** gained through the critical review of these advances in the past decades offer a perspective for future research to further resolve the fundamental issues concerning the liquefaction mechanism and responses of coral sandy sites subjecte

Objective: To explore cytotoxicity of Synsepalum dulcificum(S. dulcificum) Daniell(Sapotaceae) on human colon cancer(HcT-116 and HT-29), human monocytic leukemia(THP-1) and normal(HDFn) cell lines, and its effect on the expression of early apoptotic genes, c-fos and c-jun. Methods: Leaf, stem and berry of S. dulcificum were separately extracted by using 2 solvents, 10% ethanol(EtOH) and 80% methanol(MeOH). PrestoB lue~? cell viability assay and q RT-PcR assay were conducted to examine the above objectives respectively. Results: Stem MeOH, stem EtOH, and berry EtOH extracts of S. dulcificum were cytotoxic to HcT-116 and HT-29 human colon cancer cells. For HcT-116, Ic_(50) values of these 3 extracts were not significantly different(P>0.05) from that of the positive control bleomycin(Ic_(50) of 33.57 μg/mL), while for HT-29, Ic_(50) values of these 3 extracts were significantly lower(Pcin(Ic_(50) of 25.24 μg/mL). None of the extracts were cytotoxic to the THP-1 monocytic leukemia cells and HDFn normal human dermal fibroblasts. For both HcT-116 and HT-29, these extracts significantly up-regulated(Pc-fos and c-jun compared to the untreated negative control. conclusions: The results of this study suggest that cytotoxicity of stem MeOH, stem EtOH, and berry EtOH extracts of S. dulcificum on HcT-116 and HT-29 colon cancer cells is due to the induced apoptosis which is caused by the up-regulation of the expression of early apoptotic genes, c-fos and c-jun.

Objective:To evaluate the potential toxic effects of mine tailings exposure among the fisher folks residing near and far from the calancan Bay,Marinduque,using the micronucleus assay as an ***:The fisher folks residing near and far from the calancan Bay were interviewed and the presence and frequency of cells with micronucleus in exfoliated buccal epithelial cells were ***:Results showed that the prevalence of cells with micronucleus was higher among the fisher folks who were directly exposed to the mine tailings as compared with those fisher folks who reside in a community without exposure of mine tailings and history of mining(Pconclusions:The presence and the significant difference in the cells with micronuclei observed near the calancan Bay could possibly indicate a prolonged chemical stress caused by the toxic heavy metals in the mine tailings and the environment.

Objective:To evaluate antioxidant,cytotoxic,and anti-venom capacity of crude bark extracts of Alstonia parvifolia ***:Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(Gc-MS)and energy dispersive X-ray analyses were accomplished to characterize the chemical constituents of Alstonia *** characterization was evaluated using an inhibitory phospholipase A_(2)(PLA_(2))assay,DPPH,and cytotoxicity *** the constituents listed in the Gc-MS analyses,molecular docking was conducted to inspect the binding energies between the chosen compounds and selected PLA_(2) ***:Gc-MS analyses showed that the Alstonia parvifolia crude extract consisted predominantly of acetylmarinobufogenin(14.89%),γ-sitosterol(10.44%),3-O-methyl-D-glucose(5.88%),3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid(5.30%),(2α,5α)-17-methoxyaspidofractinin-3-one(AFM)(4.08%),and 2,3,5,6,7,8,9-heptahydro-1-phenyl-5-(p-chlorophenylimino)-1H-benzo[e][1,4]thiazepine(HPT)(1.37%).The principal elemental components of Alstonia parvifolia were ca(4.012%)and K(1.496%),as exhibited by energy dispersive X-ray *** parvifolia showed significant free radical scavenging ability(Ic_(50):0.287 mg/mL)and was non-cytotoxic to normal HDFn cells(Ic_(50)>100μg/mL).Moreover,Alstonia parvifolia was favorably cytotoxic to McF-7(Ic_(50):4.42µg/mL),followed by H69PR,HT-29,and THP-1,with Ic_(50) values of 4.94,5.07,and 6.27µg/mL,*** parvifolia also displayed notable inhibition against PLA_(2) activity of Naja philippinensis Taylor venom with Ic_(50) of(15.2±1.8)μg/*** and cluster analyses projected negative binding energies from AFM(−6.36 to−9.68 kcal/mol),HPT(−7.38 to−9.77 kcal/mol),and acetylmarinobufogenin(−7.22 to−9.59 kcal/mol).These calculations were for the particular interactions of Alstonia parvifolia constituents to PLA_(2) homologues where the utmost affinity was detected in HPT owing to the dipole interactions with amino acid ***:The bark e

Spoil characterisation using UAV-based optical remote sensing in coal mine dumps

The structural integrity of mine dumps is crucial for mining operations to avoid adverse impacts on the triple *** temporal assessments of coal mine dumps are a compliant requirement to ensure design reconciliation as spoil off-loading continues over ***,the conventional in-situ coal spoil characterisation is inefficient,laborious,hazardous,and prone to experts'observation *** this end,this study explores a novel approach to develop automated coal spoil characterisation using unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)based optical remote *** textural and spectral properties of the high-resolution UAV images were utilised to derive lithology and geotechnical parameters(i.e.,fabric structure and relative density/consistency)in the proposed *** raw images were converted to an orthomosaic using structure from motion aided ***,structural descriptors were computed per pixel to enhance feature modalities of the spoil ***,machine learning algorithms were employed with ground truth from experts as training and testing data to characterise spoil rapidly with minimal human *** characterisation accuracies achieved from the proposed approach manifest a digital solution to address the limitations in the conventional characterisation approach.

Postharvest storage of many freshly picked berries affects polyphenol and sugar content. However, little is known about the impact of refrigerated and frozen storage on aronia berry composition. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize how storage at 4 ± 2 °c and − 20 ± 2 °c, and temperature cycles affect aronia berry polyphenols, total solid content, pH, titratable acidity, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, sugar content, acid content, color, and cell structure. Refrigerated storage reduced proanthocyanidins (21%), anthocyanins (36%), and total phenols (21%) after 12 weeks. Frozen storage increased polyphenols in the first 6 mo. of frozen storage but then decreased polyphenols at mo. 8 to levels similar to initial values. Frozen temperature cycling reduced anthocyanins 18% but did not affect total phenols or proanthocyanidins. Scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated temperature cycling induced cell damage, shrinking, and fusion. This disruption led to the release of anthocyanins inside the berry tissue. PPO activity did not significantly correlate with the decrease in polyphenol content during storage. °Brix did not significantly change during refrigeration and frozen storage but did during the 12th temperature cycle. Aronia berries’ pH and titratable acidity were affected more by refrigeration than frozen and temperature storage. The pH increased by 4% during refrigeration, and titratable acidity decreased by 17% at 12 weeks. In conclusion, refrigerated storage results in a modest reduction of aronia berry polyphenols, but absolute extractable polyphenols are stable for up to 8 months of frozen storage.

B lymphocytes regulate airway granulocytic inflammation and cytokine production in a murine model of fungal allergic asthma

Sensitization to fungi often leads to a severe form of asthma that is particularly difficult to manage clinically, resulting in increased morbidity and hospitalizations in these patients. Although B lymphocytes might exacerbate asthma symptoms through the production of IgE, these cells might also be important in the protective response against inhaled fungi. Through cytokine release and T-cell interactions, these lymphocytes might also influence the development and maintenance of airway wall fibrosis. JH-/- mice lack the JHgene for the heavy chain component of antibodies, which is critical for B-cell function and survival. These animals have facilitated the elucidation of the role of B iymphocytes in a number of immune responses; however, JH-/- mice have not been used to study fungal allergy. In this study, we examined the role of B lymphocytes using an Aspergillus fumigatus murine fungal aeroallergen model that mimics human airway disease that is triggered by environmental fungal exposure. We compared disease progression in sensitized wild-type BALB/c and JH-/- mice that were exposed to repeated fungal exposure and found no differences in airway hyperresponsiveness, overall pulmonary inflammation or collagen deposition around the large airways. However, the levels of the Th2-type cytokines IL-4 and IL-13 were significantly attenuated in the airways of JH-/- mice relative to the BALB/c controls. By contrast, levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-17A and IL-6 were significantly elevated in the JH-/- animals, and there was significantly more robust airway eosinophilia and neutrophilia than in control animals. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that B lymphocytes help to regulate granulocytic responses to fungal exDosure in the pulmonary compartment.
