Parkinson’s disease(PD)is a common movement disorder of the elderly caused by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta of the *** environmental and genetic factors pointed out mitochondrial dysfunction as a major cause of neurodegeneration in *** studies using mitochondrial toxins revealed their ability to trigger dopaminergic cell death and irreversible parkinsonism in different animal models(Poewe et al.,2017).Typical features of mitochondrial dysfunction have been also observed in the human brain of idiopathic PD cases,showing alterations of respiratory chain complex I and IV activity,accumulation of mtDNA deletions and increased oxidative stress(Bender et al.,2006).Moreover,a number of genes found mutated in familial PD forms encode for proteins involved in the maintenance of mitochondrial homeostasis and quality *** these,the PINK1 gene encodes a mitochondrial serine/threonine kinase implicated in key neuroprotective functions,including mitophagy,regulation of mitochondrial transport,control of the mitochondria/endoplasmic reticulum crosstalk and calcium homeostasis(Brunelli et al.,2020).

Serologic diagnosis of celiac disease: May it be suitable for adults?

The diagnosis of coeliac disease(CD)in adult patients requires the simultaneous assessment of clinical presentation,serology,and typical histological picture of villous ***,several years ago,the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology,Hepatology,and Nutrition guidelines approved new criteria for the diagnosis in children:Biopsy could be avoided when antitransglutaminase antibody(TGA)values exceed the cut-off of×10 upper limit of normal(ULN)and anti-endomysium antibodies are positive,independently from ***“no biopsy”approach is a decisive need for pediatric population,allowing to avoid stressful endoscopic procedures in children,if *** approach relies on the correlation existing in children between TGA levels and assessment of mucosal atrophy according to Marsh’s *** lines of evidence have shown that patients with villous atrophy have markedly elevated TGA ***,we aim to perform a narrative review on the topic in *** that some studies confirmed that the×10 ULN threshold value has a very good diagnostic performance,several lines of evidence in adults suggest that TGA cut off should be different from that of pediatric population for reaching a good correlation with histological *** conclusion,the heterogeneity of study reports as well as some conditions,which may hamper the serological diagnosis of CD(such as seronegative CD and non-celiac villous atrophy)and are much more common in adults than in children,could represent a limitation for the“no biopsy”approach to CD diagnosis in patients outside the pediatric age.

Mild to moderate autoimmune thrombocytopenia(AITP) is a common finding in patients receiving interferonbased antiviral treatment, due to bone marrow suppression. Here we report the case of a patient with chronic genotype 1b hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection treated with pegylated-interferon alpha-2a, ribavirin and telaprevir for 24 wk; the patient developed severe AITP three weeks after treatment withdrawal. We performed a systematic literature search in order to review all published cases of AITP related to HCV antiviral treatment. To our knowledge, this is the second case of AITP observed after antiviral treatment withdrawal. In most published cases AITP occurred during treatment; in fact, among 24 cases of AITP related to interferonbased antiviral treatment, only one occurred after discontinuation. Early diagnosis of AITP is a key factor in order to achieve an early interferon discontinuation; in the era of new direct antiviral agents those patients have to be considered for interferon-free treatment regimens. Prompt prescription of immuno-suppressant treatment(i.e., corticosteroids, immunoglobulin infusion and even rituximab for unresponsive cases) leads to favourable prognosis in most of cases. Physicians using interferonbased treatments should be aware that AITP can occur both during and after treatment, specially in the new era of interferon-free antiviral treatment. Finally, in the case of suspected AITP, presence of anti-platelet antibodies should be checked not only during treatment but alsoafter discontinuation.

This paper describes the BAPAMAN（Binary Actuated Parallel MANipulator） series of parallel manipulators that has been conceived at Laboratory of Robotics and Mechatronics（LARM）. Basic common characteristics of BAPAMAN series are described. In particular, it is outlined the use of a reduced number of active degrees of freedom, the use of design solutions with flexural joints and Shape Memory Alloy（SMA） actuators for achieving miniaturization, cost reduction and easy operation features. Given the peculiarities of BAPAMAN architecture, specific experimental tests have been proposed and carried out with the aim to validate the proposed design and to evaluate the practical operation performance and the characteristics of a built prototype, in particular, in terms of operation and workspace characteristics.

In this paper we present a new projective synchronization scheme, where two chaotic （hyperchaotic） discrete-time systems synchronize for any arbitrary scaling matrix. Specifically, each drive system state synchronizes with a linear combination of response system states. The proposed observer-based approach presents some useful features： i） it enables exact synchronization to be achieved in finite time （i.e., dead-beat synchronization）; ii） it exploits a scalar synchronizing signal; iii） it can be applied to a wide class of discrete-time chaotic （hyperchaotic） systems; iv） it includes, as a particular case, most of the synchronization types defined so far. An example is reported, which shows in detail that exact synchronization is effectively achieved in finite time, using a scalar synchronizing signal only, for any arbitrary scaling matrix.

Tuned mass dampers (TMD) are well known as one of the most widely adopted devices in vibration control passive strategies. In the past few decades,many methods have been developed to find the optimal parameters of a TMD installed on a structure and subjected to a random base excitation process,but most of them are usually based on an implicit assumption that all of the structural parameters are deterministic. However,in many real cases this simplification is unacceptable,so robust optimal design criteria becomes aviable alternative to better support engineers in the design process. In Robust Design Optimization (RDO) approaches,indeed the solution must be able to not only minimize the performance but also to limitits variation induced by uncertainty. Most of the currently available RDO methods are based on a probabilistic description of the model uncertainty,even if in many cases they are not able to explicitly include the influence of all the possible sources of uncertainties. Therefore,in this study,a fuzzy version of the robust TMD design optimization problem is proposed. The consistency of the fuzzy approach is studied with respect to the available non-probabilistic formulations reported in the literature and an application to an example of a robust design of a linear TMD subjected to base random vibrations in the presence of fuzzy uncertainties. The results show that the proposed fuzzy-based approach is able to give a set of optimal solutions both in terms of structural efficiency and sensitivity to mechanical and environmental uncertainties.

Effects of Sampling between Data of Significant Wave Height for Intensity and Duration of Severe Sea Storms

The paper deals with the analysis of severe storms in the central Mediterranean Sea and in the US coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Firstly, we introduce a model for the representation of the sea storms by means of two parameters: the former is given by the maximum value of significant wave height in the actual storm and defines the storm intensity, the latter gives the storm duration. The analysis considers buoy data with different sampling Δt between two consecu- tive records, which varies in the range 0.5 - 6 hours. The sensitivity analysis of the modelled sea storm with the varia- tion of Δt shows as the structure of storms is strongly modified with large values of Δt of order of 3 - 6 hours: both the intensity and the duration may change significantly. The results are of interest to investigate the extreme events in the storms obtained with WAve Model, starting from meteorological data, where the value of Δt of 6 hours is widely applied. The conclusion is that structure of severe storms should be represented with continuous data, with Δt = 0.5 hours;a good representation is also obtained with Δt = 1 hour. The errors with increasing values of Δt are investigated.

This paper presents the problem of generating four-wing （eight-wing） chaotic attractors. The adopted method consists in suitably coupling two （three） identical Lorenz systems. In analogy with the original Lorenz system, where the two wings of the butterfly attractor are located around the two equilibria with the unstable pair of complex-conjugate eigenvalues, this paper shows that the four wings （eight wings） of these novel attractors axe located around the four （eight） equilibria with two （three） pairs of unstable complex-conjugate eigenvalues.
