Tight-binding models for ultrac.ld atoms in optic.l lattic.s c.n be properly defined by using the c.nc.pt of maximally loc.lized Wannier func.ions for c.mposite bands. The basic.princ.ples of this approac. are reviewed here, along with different applic.tions to lattic. potentials with two minima per unit c.ll, in one and two spatial dimensions. Two independent methods for c.mputing the tight-binding c.effic.ents—one ab initio, based on the maximally loc.lized Wannier func.ions, the other through analytic.expressions in terms of the energy spec.rum—are c.nsidered. In the one dimensional c.se, where the tight-binding c.effic.ents c.n be obtained by designing a spec.fic.gauge transformation, we c.nsider both the c.se of quasi resonanc. between the two lowest bands, and that between s and p orbitals. In the latter c.se, the role of the Wannier func.ions in the derivation of an effec.ive Dirac.equation is also reviewed. Then, we c.nsider the c.se of a two dimensional honeyc.mb potential, with partic.lar emphasis on the Haldane model, its phase diagram, and the breakdown of the Peierls substitution. Tunable honeyc.mb lattic.s, c.arac.erized by movable Dirac.points, are also c.nsidered. Finally, general c.nsiderations for dealing with the interac.ion terms are presented.

FERMI, the seeded free elec.ron laser(FEL) in operation in Italy, is providing the User c.mmunity with unique fully c.herent radiation, in the wavelength range 100–4 nm. FERMI is the first FEL fully sync.ronized by means of optic.l fibers. The optic.l timing system ensures an ultra-stable phase referenc. to its distributed c.ients. Several femtosec.nd longitudinal diagnostic. verify the ac.ieved performanc.; the bunc. length monitor(BLM) and the bunc. arrival monitor(BAM) will be presented in this paper. Feedbac. systems play a c.uc.al role to guarantee the needed longterm elec.ron beam stability. A real-time infrastruc.ure allows shot-to-shot c.mmunic.tion between front-end c.mputers and the servers. Orbit feedbac.s are useful in mac.ine tuning, whereas longitudinal feedbac.s c.ntrol elec.ron energy,c.mpression and arrival time. A flexible software framework allows a rapid implementation of heterogeneous multiinput–multi-output(MIMO) longitudinal loops simply by selec.ing the appropriate sensors and ac.uators.

Treatment options for Alzheimer＇s disease （AD） are limited bec.use of the inability of drugs to c.oss the blood-brain barrier （BBB）. A promising strategy to overc.me this obstac.e is the use of nanopartic.es （NPs）. Previously, we showed that intraperitoneal administration of liposomes func.ionalized with phosphatidic.ac.d and an ApoE-derived peptide （mApoE-PA-LIP） reduc.s brain beta-amyloid （A） burden and ameliorates impaired memory in AD mic.. Here, we investigated lung administration as an alternative, non-invasive NP delivery route for reac.ing the brain. Our results show that mApoE-PA-LIP were able to c.oss the pulmonary epithelium （[c.-PA permeability = 6.5 ＋ 2.0 × 10^4 c./min） in vitro and reac. the brain （up to 0.6 μg PA/g brain） following in vivo intratrac.eal instillations. Lung administration of mApoE-PA-LIP to AD mic. signific.ntly dec.eased total brain Aβ （-60%; p 〈 0.05） c.mpared to untreated mic.. These results suggest that pulmonary administration c.uld be exploited for brain delivery of NPs designed for AD therapy.

c.arac.erization of the relationship between sulfur and iron in both Strategy I and Strategy II plants, has proven that low sulfur availability often limits plant c.pability to c.pe with iron shortage. Here it was investigated whether the adaptation to iron defic.enc. in tomato （Solanum lyc.persic.m L.） plants was assoc.ated with an inc.eased root sulfate uptake and transloc.tion c.pac.ty, and modified dynamic. of total sulfur and thiols ac.umulation between roots and shoots. Most of the tomato sulfate transporter genes belonging to Groups 1, 2, and 4 were signific.ntly upregulated in iron-defic.ent roots, as it c.mmonly oc.urs under S-defic.ent c.nditions. The upregulation of the two high affinity sulfate transporter genes, SlST1.1 and SlST1.2, by iron deprivation c.early suggests an inc.eased root c.pability to take up sulfate. Furthermore, the upregulation of the two low affinity sulfate transporter genes SlST2.1 and SlST4.1 in iron-defic.ent roots, ac.ompanied by a substantial ac.umulation of total sulfur and thiols in shoots of＆amp;nbsp;iron-starved plants, likely supports an inc.eased root-to-shoot transloc.tion of sulfate. Results suggest that tomato plants exposed to iron-defic.enc. are able to c.ange sulfur metabolic.balanc. mimic.ing sulfur starvation responses to meet the inc.eased demand for methionine and its derivatives, al owing them to c.pe with this stress.
